My .257 Roberts and .308's both get shot to 600 for targets. 110AB @ 3163fps for the .257. Took an antelope at 500 on a run (angling away and to the right) with that load. Never worked up a "long distance" load for my .308, a Ruger Scout with a 16.1" barrel. Daughter shoots hers to 600 using a 130TTSX @ 3045fps.

With a normal length barrel I'd go with the .308 for long range targets. With a new fast-twist barrel and some of the new .257" heavies, I'd go with the .25-06.
