I have a bias and couldn’t give up a 308 Win it’s versatility is just too good. It, the 7mm-08 and the 6.5 Creedmoor are all so excellent in using modern bullet designs. There’s a great advantage firing bullets at various weights at muzzle velocity ranges of 2,550 fps - 2,950 fps as bullets typically perform as designers intended. Depending on bullet chosen there’s plenty of speed for expansion way out there, excellent expansion at 300 yards, and great bullet performance even at 100-200 yards. All three are terrific big game chambers. If the 308 Win is too much, I’d look at one of the other two, you’ll most likely make it your go to rifle for a long time. 25-06 Rem is a good chamber as well, but a quarter bore is more of a niche chamber to me and confined to presenting less versatility on big game.
