Those who are interested in our now rather regular summer gathering near Quemado, New Mexico should mark the calendar for August 9-11, 2013. All possessed of the Campfire spirit are welcome to the shootin', discussin', rememberin', and good eatin' (and fishin' for those so inclined).
Chime in if you are interested and if you have questions, ideas, suggestions, etc.
Anything you feel like bringing. As it draws closer we will have either a thread or a group pm to all those interested in coming. Usually we hash out anythings that are needed for the get together.

Hey brother just let me know. I'll also bring you some of that nasty Pendleton.
Nope! You got to be a seasoned member of the Fire with at least 295 posts. And a Canuck
"You got to be a seasoned member of the Fire with at least 295 posts." That's such deep, smelly Barn-yard Scoopin' that I can't even believe that I've read it here even in jest.
Health and finances allowing I would sure love to come. Sherri would, too. Will look at the opportunity more closely as the date approaches.
Send Sherri.
To wander helplessly into THIS pile of miscreants and reprobates?!?! And in attendnace the chief hug thief of them all according to past reports? NOPE! <G>

Mark,
I have United frequent flier miles I would be more than happy to offer to fund one flight. You will have to pay for your wife's flight though. Here's the deal. You find the funds for your flight and PM me the details, dates, airports and I will see what I can do to handle hers via my miles. I need to sort out exactly how to do this. Let me know.

That is a most wonderful offer! Thank you! That is a big part of the equation so we will consider that.
Judy and the kids are planning on going,me,well depends on what is going on the farm at that time.
Since it will be Ed's birthday does that mean that he buys lunch for everyone there?
No problem. Do you prefer white or wheat bread for your PB&J?
For the folks contemplating making this for the first time, I can't stress enough what a great bunch of folks show up at these.
There are a lot of places to camp and, as Ken pointed out, there are two motels in Quemado and two beds at his place for those who prefer a roof over their heads at night.
The Largo cafe IS a good place to eat if you are allergic to my coffee, Mudhen's fantastic burritos, Dennisinaz's pancakes and sausage, Thomasmagnum's pulled pork, Milespatton's goodies, the hamburgers, hot dogs, or the myriad of pies, pastries, and cookies that usually show up.
If we are fortunate enough to get to stay at the Armijo Springs campground again there is a Forest Service toilet there and plenty of places to park and set up tents. It didn't rain last year and I just slept out on my cot. Far enough from the others that my snoring didn't bother anyone else except the migration pattern of various large mammals and a few smaller birds.
We shoot a few dozen yards from the camping area, so there is always an opportunity to show off your firearms prowess. We also have at least one informal shooting contest, The Prairie Dog Shoot. One shot, cold bore, at whatever range we can stretch it to. Last year at Quemado we only had 100yds. At Sierra Vista we shot at 200yds. Hopefully we can stretch it to 200yds at Quemado this summer. See if anyone can beat the Krag.
There is the obligatory swap meet with a road trip to Ken's house to do the deed this year. It's all of 17 miles, so we should be able to make the trip without too much stress.
Good food, great people, great times. Even if Jon shows up in his toe shoes...
You'll probably conclude, from my inactivity at the gathering, that I'm a stand-offish clod.
Clod, yes. Stand-offish, not a bit.
Since the stroke paralyzed my throat, I can barely speak, so when I try to take part in a conversation, nobody notices. Speaking is difficult, so I have to pause a lot more often than normal conversation usually allows so it's natural to assume that I've stopped talking. Others continue the conversation.
'Tis just the way that it is.
The usual tread-wear from 82 years on the pavement has also made it hard for me to hear normal conversation. So I can not tell what others are murmuring to each other. 'Tisn't that I'm ignoring anybody when I get a faraway or blank look in my eye or nod-off 'tis only that I'm not in it.
'Tain't easy bein' senile! Enjoy the camaraderie with the others, and rest assured that if I could mingle, I would enthusiastically. As 'tis, I get a comforting kick just watching y'all having a great time among yourselves. Wishing that I could be part of it is ancillary.

Wheat and make it baloney with mustard and onions ok.
If this get together is anything like Sierra Vista,(to the newbies going)you will laugh so hard, eat well and have the best time of your life.

Those of us who've been to any of these fandangos are hoping that there'll be a record crowd here this time.
The one draw-back that has plagued our earlier gatherings is the number of wish-so-and-so-were-heres who didn't come.

Or if you get here early or stick around longer than the camp-ground doin's which aren't bad plans at all.
I accidentally met Blue (Rio7) at the Largo last year as we had both showed up early, and we had a great time hanging out and met some really good people in Quemado. One man that was working for the owner of the motel and Cafe took us coyote hunting and the motels owner invited us out to see his bear and lion dogs. He even invited us to go with him to run his dogs one day but I had to decline since my knee operation was fresh. Lots of nice people around that part of the world. miles
I just went throught there its nice now. August is going to be a bear.
I was there last year and I can tell you what it will be. It will be a blast! It will be more fun than you can imagine. It will be filled with great people and good times. And the weather was nice too.
August here will probably be nicer than wherever you are at the time.
Unless you join the party, you will never know just HOW COOL the CampFire Shindigs are. I seem to meet the nicest people there, instantly dear friends, who were strangers before.
This is one of the big opportunities the 24HCF folks have created. Don't miss it.
hell, it took me a week to rub out Scotts, finger prints after he hugged it most of the day last year. dare i chance bringing it again?rio7 P.S. looking forward to seeing Scott again. grin.

And don't forget to bring that lovely four-legged lady whose quiet dignity and gracefulness charmed us all.
"The Warden" is even saying that she might come - IF she doesn't have to go "outdoors" - This from a country girl - we might need to bring the travel trailer. (I'll get her there, just watch me! hehe)

Don't bring it!!! You are way to nice a guy for me to rob.
At least I knew what it was and from across the fire.

Can I come?
I promise that I'll try to behave!
Even if one or two opt to bunk in the shack at 17 Church Street, I won't snore.
And I won't make any serious passes at any of the honeys whom I flirt with.
Or let my drool drop onto anybody's shootin' arns.
If flying is a better option for you than driving, let us know early.
We've got fellows driving-in from in, near, or through the cities where the major airline terminals are Phoenix, Albuquerque, Tucson, El Paso so hooking a ride the rest of the way will be dog-easy if you let us know well ahead of time.
Just post something here, and you'll get posts or PM replies from folks in the areas that I've listed.
Just be sure to do it early.
If you fly here, you may also want to consider shipping bulky or sensitive baggage by UPS or FedEx days ahead of flight time. Feel free to ship to my address c/o Ken Howell; 17 Church Street; Quemado, NM 87829. The Country Store here in Quemado handles such out-going shipments. So you'd be able to fly here and back with the minimum of carry-on stuff to bother with.
You guys know I'll be there! I think this is going to be my last one. Its looking like i'll be leaving to go to Turkey AGAIN in December or January and hopefully heading to Great Falls MT after a year and half.
If anyone needs a ride from the airport in ABQ or would like to carpool let me know. Would love to carpool down with someone.
I am figuring on staying at the Largo this go 'round. Brandy and my daughter are planning on attending so that is the decider there. I think my cousin Colin and his missus will be there as well.
45-90---458--biggest gun i have is a 405 win. i dont know if i can keep up with you guys. lets have a big gun shootin contest.kinda like the p-dog shoot but closer and bigger. just a thought.might be kinda intresting, bring your biggin, everyone can shoot that wants to.off hand at fifty yrds. nickle to get in winnner takes the pot.
I lucked into mine big time. I had been looking for one since they released them, but they always showed up when times were tight(as often happens). This one showed up in Cabela's Fine gun Library here in Phoenix complete with rings, box, all the paperwork etc. I was lucky to have some stuff they wanted and walked out of Cabela's literally making a penny in profit on the deal
Blue that quarter was only for scale, but the way I shoot somedays I might need all 5 tries.
Yeah it is nice right now I am loading the 300gr interlock FP Hornady makes for the .405 Win. Though its plugging along quite a bit faster at 2500fps in my 450/400
I plan on working up some loads with the hard cast gas checked bullets I run in .41 Magnum.

I like the idea of a big bore match. Calibers that start with .4 or .5, iron sights only, offhand, one cold bore shot just like the PD Shoot.
Might have to stretch it to 100yds for a shoot-off. These big bores are accurate!
The question then becomes; cast bullets or jacketed? Smokeless or BP? So many choices to make.

I can pull my scope easy enough. I am not sure if Dennis's Lott has irons or not. Heck we could to two shots... 50 & 100 yards. Measured distance from bull on both shots, and lowest total number wins. Just a thought to add a twist.

shooting my hepburn is always fun, but dont change what everyone wants just for me, i will try to bring enough ammo, so anyone that wants to shoot my hepburn can.we will have to watch out for Scott, he is hell on wheels with my hepburn! rio7
I am working real hard carving a Hepburn out of a maple limb I found. Thinking I might pull a switch on my friend Blue just before he goes home. Shhhhhh, don't tell him.
I have been thinking about bringing the mighty K-hornet this year and giving the gopher shoo a real try. I may change my mind. I would not want all the big bore guys to get their feelings hurt.
i bet i could get some dyes made up for your 220 howell, you can send it home with me and i will bring it back some time in the future with 10 boxes of ammo. i promise!!! rio7
I can come up with some IMR-7828 SSC. Its only the super short cut variety, but from what I know its the same burn-rate wise. My local guy has had a few jugs for a while now.
Heck if there is a chance PW is going to be in the valley before August I'd pass it along to him. Perhaps we could get some rounds loaded before the get together then. Failing that I can bring the powder up when we meet up.
Well I can certainly pick up a 1lb jug or two of that 7828SSC if it would help the cause.
Thanks, but don't bother. I'll never be able to load or shoot anything again.
If I were, I'd lay-in a good supply of N570, ReLoDer 23 or 25, or Ramshot Magnum. Then I'd at least scare the pee outa some 'way-off pasture poodles and yodel dogs!
But even on my dreamin'est days, I dasn't dream of such bliss.
Its your call Ken. If you want I am positive we can find a way to muster up some suitale loaded .220 Howell. I know of one active loader nearby you by who might be coerceable...
I am sure if you were inclined to try a spot of shooting that there would be no shortage of well intentioned help ready and willing to aid in any way needed.
Its your call Ken. If you want I am positive we can find a way to muster up some suitale loaded .220 Howell. I know of one active loader nearby you by who might be coerceable.
Thanks, but I'd probably better leave it as-is for now.
When I decide how and to whom to pass it along, he can decide who'll be loading for it.
And whoever'll be loading for it can decide which powder to use.
It's never been fired. It was to be the ultimate of my three .220 Howells, and I scooped enough bucks into it to make my knees watery whenever I even think of what the total would be.
I aimed to shoot the heck out of it, of course, but got it complete and ready to go just after the stroke that killed my hope of ever shooting again. Several surgeries and complications have further doomed my shooting.
I have a hard case, the custom dies, 100 or more head-stamped virgin .220 Howell cases, and over 6,000 Hornady 75-grain Hornady A-Maxes for it. I also have four scopes, with rings, for the Talbot QD mount. The scope that's on it now is a stainless 32x Weaver. Planned to add something a bit more powerful but had to abandon that notion (the Weaver came when I was in the hospital).
If you have QuickLOAD, you can get some idea of what to expect it to do. I set the seating depth (in QuickLOAD) to 0.555 inch (shank 0.375 inch) and ran the scale for optimum powders to fill the net capacity of the case to 90100% full and 50,000 lb/in maximum pressure. IIRC, Ramshot Magnum would theoretically poke that A-Max out of he 26-inch barrel at 3,3003,400 ft/sec and a tad less than 50,000 lb/in.
Oehler's Ballistic Explorer predicts that such a load would make the classic .220 Swift factory loads look like grade-school spitballs beyond about 200 yards.
These 75-grain A-Maxes look like they oughta do a coupla hundred ft/sec just sittin' on the shelf!
Ken, honored to say the reamer for this intriguing barn burner of a cartridge sits here at my humble digs.
I would imagine that working with a soft blank, I could gen up a neck bushing die, to be suitably heat treated afterward (are you listening tex n cal ?) I hesitate to try and do initial case forming with a set up like that.
.270 brass'd make suitable cases, all right, but I'd prefer .25-06.
Two preliminary steps'd be necessary. (They won't form in just one pass. You can easily guess how I know!) Start massaging the shoulder back with an 8x57mm Mauser sizer. Continue massaging the shoulder back with a 7x57mm Mauser sizer backed-off about 0.10 inch.
The resulting case should then form properly in the .220 Howell sizer and need only be trimmed, reamed, and probably annealed.
I scooped enough bucks into it to make my knees watery whenever I even think of what the total would be.
Having thus begun, I reckon that I oughta add a few major details
original Nesika bench-rest action (single-shot) 26-inch Broughton bench-rest barrel with Howell straight-taper contour for maximum stiffness H-S Precision tactical stock with integral aluminum chassis (glass-bedded) Remington trigger (with safety removed), with Kiplinger single-set finger piece Talbot QD mount Harris bipod butt monopod
Since I don't trust variable scopes, and prairie-dog towns are at a variety of long distances away, I opted for the Talbot mount (which always goes back smack to zero) and four good more-reliable fixed-power scopes 8x, 12x, 24x, and 32x to be zeroed for whatever range of distances that I'd be shooting.
Designed and commissioned this hummer to be a "field model" bench-rest piece.
No doubt about the fine company. While I've had the pleasure of you and your son's company, there's 20 more hands I'd definitely like to shake in this upcoming crowd of folks. I could definitely bore Greg and Ken for at least one Happy Hour.
This would be a tough one to pass up. I'll look into it further,Tom.
I would imagine that working with a soft blank, I could gen up a neck bushing die, to be suitably heat treated afterward (are you listening tex n cal ?) I hesitate to try and do initial case forming with a set up like that.

so a stick of, say A-2 tool steel 1.25" dia would work? After machining - Austentitize in stainless foil, air cool, Harden & double temper to Rc 56-60?
I think someone once told me most commercial dies are made of A-2, as it changes dims very little in hardening.
I could likely round up the material pretty easily, though I'd have to farm out the heat treat.
I wonder how many cases could be acceptably formed in good unhardened tool steel.
After all, once you've formed a batch of brass, you don't need forming dies any more.
Also, you don't need forming dies if you use the sizer dies that I mentioned above.
Some dimensional variation is acceptable from a forming die anyway. The sizing die trues 'em up, doesn't it?
Back around the time when Joe Garagiola had hair, one enterprising soul made a chamber cast of his whomper, poured a can of hard plaster around it, melted the chamber cast out, and cobbled-up a few cases that his sizer would accept.
I wonder how many cases could be acceptably formed in good unhardened tool steel.

Ken, I've got some large rimmed .45 body forming dies I made out of the crops off of mostly octagon Badger barrels. They used to use a .8750" "Fixture" on the muzzle end of their blanks for their deep holing and rifling,....it sure made things pretty easy and straight forward......prior to crowning I'd just pick up that Dia., and thread 14tpi, Run the reamer in.....than lop off the 'Drop' (and crown). Most everybody wanted 32" or 30" barrels, so the 36" blanks had adequate material (just) to spare.
The Chro moly steel, polished out has literally done 100s of cases without a scratch or a hiccup.
These are of course, STRAIGHT cases,.......I've not all that much experience in re-forming / wildcatting the bottlenecks (yet )
In truth, it all seems pretty straightforward from this vantage point.

I was trying to decide between my 45 70 and 444 when I noticed the "iron sights" requirement. I had to take the Williams receiver sight off the old Marlin when I got a floater in my shooting eye a few years back.
Looking thru an aperture, I get one of them diagonal lines like they put on signs when they don't want you doing something. So I'll just observe and criticize .

You'll fit right in. Most folks turn the air blue right after their shot, so one more comment won't matter.
As to the PD shoot, everyone touches off their best shot, makes lots of excuses for shooting poorly, THEN they go downrange and check targets. You know, just like every other trip to the range.
Is the PD shoot offhand as well? I don't shoot PD's that way, as you know. A correct PD rifle is a poor choice for offhand shooting.[actually, there are no GOOD choices for me}
I shoot my No 1 in 270 WBY better offhand than any of my PD rifles. Might be the set trigger. If we stop out West long enough for me to shoot[at] a PD with it, can I count it as my PD rifle in the match? [you'll loan me the nickel, I hope]
Finally, is a Texas CHL valid in the Land of Enchantment?
I got married at least once [that I remember] in New Mexico, and I've hunted there a few times for MD.
And some of us shot borrowed rifles and still did quite well. I believe with a little time with Blues' .223, Jon toeshoes would have to look over his shoulder. miles
Or Ed will goose me just as I squeeze my shot off.
On our prairie-dog shoots in NW Kansas, over-long Bill J usually sat in the front seat (more room for his over-long legs). One day, I was sitting in the front seat, with Bill behind me.
Just as I was about to take-up the trigger slack for a long-range shot, my cross-hairs suddenly started going all over the prairie.
"What the ?"
With one kielbasa forefinger, good buddy Bill was gently and rhythmically pressing the heel of my stock.
There's more than one way for everybody to enjoy a good laugh on a prairie-dog shoot, and my good buddy Bill was always good for a bunch of 'em.
Good. I coulda talked my way out of a jam, but I was concerned about Ed.
Texas has a reciprocity agreement with NM, so your good to go Dog. Just don't carry your Pistole inside if you happen to make a pit stop at one of the many Navajo or Apache Casinos in NM. You'll end up in Indian Jail on the Rez & some Chief will end up with your Pistole

There are a lot of dies made from A-2 but almost NO reloading dies. A-2 is a very expensive tool steel and is not used for that reason. Almost all dies are made from leaded steel or similar and case hardened.
I have used A-2 when I can get suitable scraps and it is great stuff!! Because of its high chrome content it air hardens nicely.

Y'all practice shooting........... I'll practice excuses. Don't worry, there will be an excuses practice session for all participants before anyone fires a shot

Don't shoot the 8 bore (or a 7.5 lb. 45-90?) beforehand - that one's legit, ask how I know.
A Red Ryder event could actually be fun, just don't crawl the stock, those things can be vicious...
You wealthy guys crack me up! I don't have any money to worry about. We have a financial meeting and it lasts about two seconds. No money, no need to talk.
I am not a hard ass. I just have a hard limit on when and how money can be spent. It's also known as a budget. Yep, you go on bear hunt, I get to go to a conference for my job. Think you came out smelling like a rose on that one.
I've been going-over (in my mind) and adding to the list of goodies that I hope you guys will help me get rid of. It makes me tired just to think of it all. And a lot of unpacking looms, now that the weather's warm enough for me to get out to the shed.
I want that ol' bucket to be empty when I kick it, so I hope that some of you guys'll come out here in pick-ups that'll have room for a lot of extra ballast when you head for home.
'Way too much stuff here!
Charlie O'Neil bought a discarded Missoula transit bus to become his shop west of Alberton. Iver said that pulling it out of town behind a jeep looked like a mouse pulling a dead cat. That's sorta how I feel with all this good stuff that I'll never be able to use and my kids don't want.
Some of it once it's sorted will be fodder for the dump, but not much. Not enough.
if i make it down Ken im always in the market for books and given im driving i can haul a fair bit.....just need to get through this next week and ill have a better idea on if i can make it....
If Ed insists on stopping at one of them, I'll just hock all my guns before I go in, so the chief will never see it.
I am going to need all my available cash for the visit to Ken's house.
Bringin' a Brink's?
When a faraway friend learned that I'd had a stroke and was in the hospital, he called to see how I was doing. Asked what my needs were.
I hadn't thought in those terms (recovering from a stroke is pretty much a right now project), but I quickly ad-libbed four pressing needs
"I need " a brain transplant, " a spine transplant, " a Brink's truck with a heavy load in back, " and " an opportunity to determine whether I need Viagra."
So far, no hope of any succor in sight, in any above-listed category.
As to the Viagra, I seem to recall some beautiful young ladies hanging off your neck in the not-too-distant past. That wasn't enough to give you an idea?
At a SHOT Show several years ago, I told one of my friends to hug his Honey for me when he got home (when I'd been there, I'd done that chore all by myself).
"You get all the love!" he hollered at me, "and I get all the bills!"
(Truth is, I've always been extraordinarily careful to mind my Ps 'n' Qs around his private paragon of pulchritude he owns a big warehouse of gun powders. But she knows that I love 'er dearly.)
drriving down the road sunday morning and i thought! why dont i go to raton,N.M. and look at the Whittington Center.big mistake, spent all afternoon sunday, all day monday, met some great people shot a Barret .50 6 rds, never done that before, watched young people shooting sporting clays, then b.s. with a group of old guys like me, that were shooting long range black powder, what i dont know about this stuff, would fill a dump truck, but they let me give it a try , i was pretty proud i got on paper at 800 yrds. with some instruction.if those of you that have never been there the whittington center give it a go. people are great its a beautiful 33000 acre ranch and gun range. finally found a place where my lap top will work, next to colo spgs to campfire gathering. You will be known for ever by the tracks you leave. rio7
Sounds awesome Blue. I want to visit the Whittington Center one of these days. I tried to make the Campfire get together that was there a few years ago, but it just didn't work out.
I seem to recall some beautiful young ladies hanging off your neck in the not-too-distant past. That wasn't enough to give you an idea?
No matter how much time I've still got left, I'll die with gobs of hugs unused.
I'm young enough to enjoy huggin' the sweeties but too old to remember why.
Lonely as a mountain breeze, I wandered where'er I'd please, Yet I kept on longing Just to rest a while
Where a sweetheart's tender eyes Took the place of trees and skies, All the world forgotten In one woman's smile.
One alone, to be my own, I alone to know her caresses One to be, eternally, The one my worshiping soul possesses.
At her call, I'd give my all, All my life and all my love enduring. This would be a magic world to me If she were mine alone. [unashamedly borrowed and personalized]
I wanted more much more than a hole with warm meat around it, as so many fellows seemed to seek.
If we've had enough rain I might bring my small smoker/grill. I could put on some smoked hot links and boudain, and maybe burgers for dinner probably Saturday.
I finally found a place that makes good, fresh boudain daily here in Phoenix. I smoke over pecan wood with a bit of lump charcoal to control the heat until it takes a nice color from the smoke. Pic from the last batch I did for a UFC party:
That flavor of wisdom was the order of the times Back in the Day.
for example
When I fall in love, it will be forever, Or I'll never fall in love. In a restless world like this is, Love is ended before it's begun. And too many moonlight kisses Seem to cool in the warmth of the sun.
When I give my heart, it will be completely, Or I'll never give my heart And the moment I can feel that you feel that way too Is when I fall in love with you.

LOOKS VERY GOOD!
Just an idea, how about a grillin' contest with steaks, sausage and pork ribs?
Well,Ed can be useful some where else, like chopping the wood or send him into Soccoro for steaks and such. While he is gone have the contest. Or,even put Ed into the grillin' contest himself,he can grill PB&J sandwiches.

More later.
Bringing this back around for those that might be interested.
I'm going to try to get there this year, if I can finagle my work schedule accordingly. It's on my calendar, but I probably will not be able to get there on Friday.
It may well... I am just getting a long sitting rifle up and going. Quemado gave me a reason. Finally scoped a slick little Mauser custom .243 Win. Its a short action, but a large ring 98 in a pretty nice stick of wood.
Thomas, sure looking forward to seeing your .243. Can I have a shot?
Scott, sounds like you are just full of it with that K Hornet talk.
For all - Dennis and I have yet to get together and have the shoots fully planned - will be doing that soon so you all can get prepped. But, for now, who knows the distance the PD shoot might be???

A GOOD REMINDER HERE - PROBABLY NOW TIME FOR FOLKS TO START INDICATING IF THEY PLAN TO BE WITH US AT THE GATHERING (number attending?).
WHEN ALL ARE KNOWN, WE CAN GET THE PLANNING PM STARTED - PROBABLY AROUND JULY 8.
SO - CHIME IN HERE IF YOU THINK YOU WILL BE ATTENDING.
I have only shot it a few times myself. I had it up and shooting with an old El Paso Weaver T-10 couple of years back. I put about 40 rounds of Federal factory 105 gr through it and it sure seemed to do well with it. Then I sold the Weaver, and it has just sat since then.
I put a Leupold 3-9x on it tonight, and I'll get sighted in soon..

Thanks. I stummbled into it for an unbelievably low price, and had to bring it home. I am not typically a fan of thumbhole stocks on hunting guns, but this one is really interesting when you see up close.
I was looking for CCCC's description of the PD shoot, but I cant find it now. Basically last year it was a 1 shot coldbore match. The target was a silhouette of a prairie dog with a 1" bullseye pasted on the chest. Each shooter has their own dog and pasted bullseye. The person who was closet to the bullseye won. One shot, cold bore from the bench.
That all said I believe dennisinaz and CCCC were planning to change it up some this go 'round.

Count me in as I am 98% sure I will be there.
working on getting stuff situated so i can go but its likely gonna depend on how well the new employees work out so its mostly out of my hands.....
If Ed will loan me the entry fee for the PD shoot contest, I'll bring my 22 250AI, or 244AI, or 204 Ruger [don't need improving] or 22 Hornet [I can't spell "K"].
We could trap a few P dogs, stake 'em out at 250 yards and shoot offhand at 'em like the Mexicans used to do with goats.
After we run out of ammo we could knock 'em in the head and cook 'em. [like the mescins used to do with goats ]
Tom - thanks for the pics. Very nice - and I am partial to thumb hole stocks. If it shoots as good as it looks, this will be quite a contest.
Tom's description of the PD shoot is pretty much right on - the target dot has been a bit larger than 1/2 inch and we have done it at both 100 and 200 yards. 2013 specifics yet to be set.

Tech Tip:
Ya'll bring enough SPOTTING SCOPES, so as to allow folks to avoid lending out theirs to the point of having none to use for their own "dialing in".
My eyeballs are calibrated in squints, the narrowest known distance.
My rifles aren't calibrated at all. They just put the bullet wherever it's pointed. Funny, that.
As to "how far?", it could be ten feet, it could be 300 yards. Somewhere between Ken's estimates would be correct, so if you're going to practice beforehand, you'd best be getting busy.
I know I'm going to have to practice. There's some mighty fine shooters coming to this gathering!
Talked to the wife, she's always wanted to see the Grand Canyon. If she can get the time off, we're going to fly into Albuquerque, spend a day or two at the gathering and drive over to Arizona. Be nice to put some faces with the names!

I would fly into Vegas NV, drive to Williams Az, take the train from Williams to the grand canyon, drive to Quemado, then to Albuquerque to fly out and drop the car off.

Hope you are able to join the gathering - let us know if it is a "yes" so we can be sure to get you in on the planning and info.

Yet another possible alternative
Fly to Albuquerque, hook a ride here with Jon, hook another ride to Phoenix with just about any one of several guys, and rent a car there for the rest of your trip. The Canyon is a tad over 200 miles from Phoenix.
Rest assured that however and whenever you get here, you'll be members of the crowd in good standing (if you can stand us)!

All depends on wether the wife can get the time off. Sould find out in the next couple of days. Only disapointing thing is, if we make it to Vegas, we won't be able to see Sigfreid and Roy! (just kidding!)
I told you in January at Sierra Vista NOT to aim and it worked. So, why wouldn't this piece of advice work, too?
Besides, If I don't cheat by using the sights, I can't win!
Ed
Well I can't win with or without sights so what am I to do? Thinking of putting a fishin' worm in your sandwich BEFORE we shoot. Or some other sneakin' way of winning.

No worries - Siegfried has plans to be at the gathering - but Roy won't be here. We don't allow 'em both at the same time - too much competition for the neat-truck show-offs in our bunch.

Speaking of which.... We drove to Ca. on Saturday to drop the kids off for a couple of weeks with Brandy's aunt. While we were there the local chevy dealer left me a message offering $12k in rebates on a new truck. Sunday on the drive home from Ca. we talked it over and decided to buy. We got home, fed and watered the dogs and went over to the dealer. Walked out with a much upgraged Silverado compared to our old one for a tad less money even!
If you're driving here from the East, the shorter more scenic route from Albuquerque is west on I-40 to Exit 89, then south through El Malpais National Monument on NM-117 to NM-36 and then south on NM-36 to Quemado.
If you come here by way of Socorro, you might want to stop in Pie Town (about 20 miles east of here on US-60) long enough to try their famous strawberry pie.

THE GATHERING !! Through page 35 we have this probably inaccurate list of intended participants. Those thought to be undecided are shown with "?".
Soon after July 4 we will go to a PM setup for those coming - enables better planning and more secure sharing of detailed info. So, please peruse the list and tell us if you should be included, or excluded, and if we have your corect handle.
I will contact Dennis so we can try to get the shoot plans set up soon.

and isn't there also s'pose ta be a fellow named Paul W in that bunch? Can't leave him out or turn him away!
Man I'd really like to see Paladin again... meeting him, his wife and son were a great pleasure couple years ago.
Darby has another engagement that week unfortunately, hope Ron makes it again, Greg is on the list... and I don't know who Lee is but always looking for new victims...
Dave ("Paladin") lives in Cody, WY, but is working in Texas right now. Told me some time back that he hopes to be able to join us.
Lee is the fellow who used to produce Super Vel ammunition years ago. He's back at his old home in eastern New Mexico now. Super-nice guy. Sho' hope he comes!

It's on, just talked to the wife, she got he time off! Have to start looking at flights. Probably fly into Albuquerqe on Fri. and spend Sat, and part part Sun. at the gathering. I guess we're going to rent a car at the airport, Head to Quemado, and head out on Sun. spend a day or two in the Flagstaff area, and then over to the canyon. After that head to Vegas and fly home.

Nice plan - good that you are joining the gathering - but, if you wait until Sat am to come to the site, you might miss a delicious Fri evening dinner and some antics.
Great, Tom. We will add Brandy behind your screen name and the kids as well - is it Stephen or Steven, and what is that little cutie's name?
As soon as you know, please advise about adding Colin (screen name?)and wife.
Stephen, and Gianna. Don't let her cuteness fool you either PW. She is pretty rough and tumble. I'll give Colin a call or text soon. He came down to S.V. with me and was really glad to meet everyone.
I figure on bring the .243 Mauser I mentioned before, and I am for sure bringing "baby huey" my 450/400 3". I'll also probably tote along a pistol or two, and my new Mossberg 590A1.

I have been infected with the 1874 Sharps virus and it is terminal.

chit thats nothing, stopped in Big Timber once to check out Shiloh on our way to Bozeman.....the wife took one look at my face while i was handling the guns in the showroom and now she wont even let me stop in Big Timber for gas last trip to Bizeman she told me i couldnt stop before we even left Billings and i hadnt even said anything yet
It would work here also, all of the elk I killed have been 150 yds or less. It would also work on a bear hunt I have in November.
But there is this,Winchester Featherweight 7mm Mauser.
Taking this bear hunting.
I'm in the "definitely maybe" category for Quemado, but I think you should bring that. I may need to pull the trigger a couple times to confirm that I really don't need one...
Is that a 401 self-loader? Bring that, and the High Wall with what appears to be irrigation pipe for a barrel.
close, it's a M1907 in .351. Minor problems may be finding a mag for it (I have one, somewhere, but it's packed away). I have some old ammo, but new brass is backordered. I do have dies for it. Need to get some of the Hawk bullets.
The High Wall is a .45-90. It weighs about 7.5 lbs
Love the highwall! But I am a real sucker for classic singel shots.
its better in person Scott, got to see it in Tennessee.....definitely a rifle screwed together by someone that understood what a hunting rifle should be....
My wife caught me looking at the Shiloh site again last night.
She asked the perennial question; "What is so special about those when you have so many other rifles you don't shoot much?"
It took me almost a half hour to talk about just the model I want and the accessories.
She finally said; "I guess it's like me and saddles."
She got it.
She has bought several guns for me over the years, so I think I can get her on board with this without too much trouble.
Wish me luck!
Ed
The question is, are you constantly humming the theme from Quigley Down Under...
It's worse. I go into gun shops looking solely for Sharps rifles. It is the first Internet search I do every time I turn my computer on. I am constantly browsing web pages of bullet mold makers, BPCR accessory makers, sight makers, and other forums trying to become more knowlegable about every facet of owning and shooting Sharps rifles.
I quit tobacco almost thirty years ago and this is worse than any tobacco craving I've ever had.

so I guess this would distress you, huh?
Bastid! That constitutes cruel and unusual behavior.

Well, why don't you add a day or two to your itinerary, swing through here and fire up the machinery, hang a .458 barrel ? ......( there are more than a few in the corners ) on one of the numerous old roller actions laying around in parts and pieces. Shank, chamber, and extractor extractor cut, no more. The rest is all hand work.
One day, do the deed described.....GTF out of here,....go home and finish the bloody thing.
These aren't rocket ships, you know.
Get Mark to show you that SS Krag,........I wish he'd finish THAT one.
"I think you, Ken, and Scott have all been smoking the same stuff. grin That .458 will never be sold or traded, or shot.
Ed"
Fixed it for you.
Shows how much you know. I was worrying the heck out of the silhouette turkeys at 385yds at Sierra Vista with it back in January. That's where Mark first saw it. We burned up about 50 rounds IIRC. It stays in my office, propped up against my loading bench, stuffed with cast bullet hand loads when I'm home.
It would work here also, all of the elk I killed have been 150 yds or less. It would also work on a bear hunt I have in November.

I'll take/send it. Just be fore warned the 7mm Mauser was a Shot Show special ie a limited number made.
Finally got in touch with the Largo. I said we need a room for Aug. 9-10. " Yup OK!" Do you want a credit card number? "Nope your all set" I guess they do things a little differently, in NM.
That's amazing! At neither the Largo nor the Alegre?
No one has yet put dibs on my two extra beds (one single, one double).
Also
If it's rainy, any number of semi-hardy souls can bunk-down dry in my "shed" a 20-foot overseas-shipping container with electricity (lights and receptacles) if you don't have a tent. BYO cots and/or air mattresses.
I'll offer him almost $57.00 and some slightly used .308 brass.
Ed
I will offer sixty bucks, a five gallon bucket of 308 military brass, and two boxes of unused 22 rf.
Scott you REALLY want that Hepburn.
I have wanted one sins I first read about them years ago. I have seen three, on in the museum in Cody, WY, a real beater hanging on the wall in Sequim, WA and the one at last years gathering. Blue's was the first one I touched. Reality is I will never have the $$$ to own one but for a long time I was looking for one to measure and draw up so I could make one. They are not that hard to machine and I even had a piece of half hard 4140 set aside to start the project.
So yes, I would really want one and that one is a beauty. And I do have a bucket of military 308 I am cleaning up and will be reloading a bunch for a good friend, and I do have two boxes of once fired new in the box, never opened, 22 rf.
Love the highwall! But I am a real sucker for classic singel shots.
GTC
Fantastic offer! I will have to look and see but this trip is sandwiched tighter than a Oreo cookie between a wedding and a visit by my oldest son and my grandkids I have not seen in seven years.
I think it will have to wait until next time I can get down your way.
Understand Scott,I always wanted a double rifle in .470 or .500 NE,those are WAY beyond my price range. Don't think Greg can put one together in a weekend either.
I have stayed at the Largo several times and never had a problem. The rooms have always been clean. Maybe a local rumor?
As to the shoots, it sounds as though you and Dennis have some good ones lined up.
A pistol shoot should be set up so that wheel guns, both single and double action can compete. I'm thinking 50yds minimum, offhand, based on some of the shooting I've witnessed at the last few of these riots*.
* Definition of a riot; Seven or more people gathered in a public place in a boisterous manner such as to cause distress to passersby, ladies, small children, dogs, and livestock.
I have NO interest in checking under Jon's hammock!
Paul, I have stayed at the Largo several times and never had a problem. The rooms have always been clean. Maybe a local rumor? Ed
OK Honest Ed, you bit quick - and ended the ruse. By using the antique term "cooties", was hoping to get a rise or two from folks who go for the local luxury suites rather than the hammocks.
FOLKS - Ed is correct - we have not heard a bad comment about the Largo Motel. I know nothing about the Alegre - but have no reason to suspect any problems.
No, I picked up the "cooties" from the drool that was on the 1895 LTDIII and the .458WM.
The question is, where did you and Mark get them?
Ed
Paul,
Sorry to quell the joke.
I would also encourage all that CAN camp out at Armijo Springs to do so. If you are not there from sunup until Mudhen finally goes to bed, you will miss a lot of fun.
I was off in the distance so I wouldn't disturb anyone with my snoring. Didn't want anyone to think a tornado or an earthquake was about to engulf them.

come to the Tennessee hog hunt next year and gunner will hand you your choice of a 500 or a 577 double to whack a pig with.....cant use the 303 though cause its not leaving my possession once i get there

Pass on the .577 NE,but the .500 NE sounds like a BLAST!
NHK9 smoked a hog with the 500 this year......goal this coming year is to see if we can get several lined up and get 2 or 3 in one shot the pig just quit.....
I would like a 45-70 double or better yet a 45-90.
Heck, I would think a 22 hornet double would be fun.
Yes a .22 Hornet double would be fun, but, from reading Peter Capstick,Craig Boddinton,Jack Lott and Elmer Keith the double rifle "mystique" just goes with dangerous game.
ill prolly never afford a double so i keep looking at drillings and cape guns for the double feel.....round here with all the big game and bird seasons going on at the same time it would actually be handy to hunt with too....

I once drew up a trapdoor in Auto Cad and scaled it down to make a trapdoor hornet. Got hurt before I got started on the machining and lost the drawings when a laptop died years ago. I still think it would have been fun.

July 13th--hope to be walking unassisted by the time Quemado rolls around.
I had both of mine replace In Jan. of 2011. Getting them both done at the same time was tough. Literally didn't have a good leg to stand on. Five days in the hospital, and I hate hospitals.
Howdy u-all, got home from Neb. P-dog shoot last night, long drive from Neb. to S.Tex. stopped in Colo. for campfire get together, got to meet some great guys and eat some good food and hear some good storys and do a little shooting, then on to Neb. for 3 days of P-dog shooting, had a great time, mon-teu. the shooting was great wend. the wind was blowing about 40mph, made for some intresting shots. heard a rumor all the way up there that there are some guys drooling over my Hepburn, dont want to hurt anyones feelings but ( you cant have it.) i did shoot 2 p-dogs with it at under 100 yrds, its going to take me till aug. to reload all the stuff i shot up, so i can get in some of these shooting contests youall have dreamed up. looking forward to seeing old friends and making new friends in N,M, this year.rio7
Never got tired of Carol Anne three wonderful kids shooting prairie dogs chewing the fat with friends so there's no question what are the four emptiest parts of my heart.
A question came up on a different thread, that had me pulling a single shot out of the back of the safe. As I stood it up to look at it, I not only admired the lines, but also considered, 20+ years after I got my first deer with it, that it may still be the most accurate rifle in the safe. It might have to acquire a scope, and might get entered in the Prairie Dog shoot...
I have one you can put on it. I'll bring it and you can mount it Saturday morning. No need to sight it in. It was sighted in on the last rifle it was on, just before the truck rolled and the rifle was ejected onto the pavement.
Just trying to give you an even chance at winning the P.D. Shoot.
WOW! Are they consecutively serial numbered? Do they come with matching leather gear? What kind of velocity are you getting with WalMart ping pong balls? Will running a name-brand ball help with accuracy? Is there much recoil? Are they DynaBore coated? Are you running iron sights or are you going to put optics on them? Does Barnes make a TTSX in that caliber?
Is it time for me to switch to decaf?
Seriously, there are some GREAT pistol shooters that show up to these.

Cool, thanks! Can I repay you - loading some .30-40's for you?
If it's windy and the target moves I might have a chance, or maybe if someone messes with my scope by twirling the knobs, or if...
Just use Darby's rifle. He tried to get me to use it in the dog shoot last year and when I shot to try it, it was about eight inches high, so I used Blue's rifle and winged it. miles

Sure! I'll just wrap some blue tape on the muzzle and they will work just fine.
this year is sounding intresting, think i will bring everything ive got so i might have a chance with you guys, Miles did a hell of a job with my .223 last year. think this year i will sight it in, didnt do that last year, then it will be look out for Miles! think i will also bring a few hand guns.this is like bubble gum the more i chew it the bigger it gets.rio7
I spun the knobs on my 223 according to where the hit was after the PD shoot at the last shindig. I figure it's dead on now, and the fact that Quemado is only 2000' higher than SV shouldn't matter...right?
It was black rifle day at the range today. I took an AK, a AR10, and two Daniel Defense AR's - a 5.56 and a .300 blackout. The Daniels were darned impressive. The shooter less so The 5.56 may be even more accurate than that bull barreled Armalite I had at Quemado last year.
Of course the guy next to me had a Dakota M76 Traveler, which had me distracted all day. That's my excuse, and I'm sticking to it.
A couple years ago I had a chance to buy a Model 10 single shot in 7mm Dakota for $3k. But I just couldn't swing it at the time. Haven't seen one that cheap since then.
If looking at nice wood is going to be in order, I have some extra-gorgeous custom stuff here that I can bring along, to make sure that everybody's salivary glands are working normally.
Alas, no ammo loaded for any of 'em! Like home-made jerky, that stuff just wouldn't last long enough to get old!
All of my guns were locked up in a gun safe then thrown into a truck and moved to Washington. Upon arrival the safe was buried in the back of a storage rental. I was gone when all this happened. I do not own a pretty rifle but mine do shoot.
Any of you guys shoot paint balls? Maybe we should try it this year. Glue five paint balls to a piece of paper and post it at a hundred yards. You get seven rounds to break five paint balls.

That does sound like fun! Are they close enough together to break them all at once with a LARGE projectile?
You can hit a coyote a PD will be "almost" as easy.
You ain't seen how little those PD's at Quemado are. miles
When my brother and I got our first rifle in 1947, we had no good idea what to expect of ourselves. We started learning
Bottle caps first. My brother gave-up early.
I wasn't satisfied until I was able to hit empty .22 hulls now 'n' then. Collected such wee targets a lot faster than I ruined 'em!
After that, printed targets looked like cheating for sissies.
Never mastered the Elmer Keith trick of shooting through the neck of a bottle and breaking the bottom. Some things are simply too far beyond the reach of ordinary mortals. (And maybe our cheap little single-shot .22 something well under ten bucks, greasy-new wasn't up to it, either!)

I just use a piece of notebook paper so an eight inch round should do the job.
I normally use a hot glue gun but with no power we will have to find something else to glue them up. I would make them at home but they do would not travel well when flying.
.22 lR stuff. The paint balls as targets are fun, especially for young uns that like to see things happen when they shoot. My grand kids love that stuff as a break from the target routine. They also like to shoot at a golf ball sitting on top of a post at about 40 or 50 yards. That ball really takes off when they hit it square.
Golf balls @ 100yds with a .22lr is one of my favorite games.
I bought a bunch of small hook eyes, inserted them into the golf balls, and hung them from branches at unknown distances as a challenge for my nephew, Chris.
I normally use a hot glue gun but with no power we will have to find something else to glue them up.
I will have a small inverter that plugs into a lighter but I doubt that it would have enough power to run a glue gun. I use it to charge my laptop or phone. I might look into a small generator. The have them now that are pretty portable. miles
Did a little checking and a full size glue gun uses about 40 watts and a mini uses about 8 watts, and my inverter says it is 800 watts, so it should work. miles
Where do you guys find all of these fancy odd-looking rifles?
Ed - let's hang some golf balls for Friday evening fun with .22s.
That works for me.
BTW, the "target rifle" I used to win the last PD shoot was a Contender Carbine, 21" standard weight barrel, 4x Burris mini scope, chambered in .30-40 Krag, shooting a Hornady 165gr BTSP over 46gr of IMR4350 around 2400fps.
Why didn't one of the high end custom rifles with a high dollar scope with a kajillion x magnification, shooting benchrest quality ammo win it?
I will get a PM out to everyone with some guidelines that we have in mind. Just a few tidbits:
For the two steel matches, they have to be hunting rifles and no magnums on the steel preferably. I may reconsider this if it excludes anyone. If it is a rifle that you would normally carry in the field, it is fine. I just don't want any BR or F-class rifles competing against hunting rifles. Other than that, pretty much open.
Dennis, if this is open to iron sights, I would like to shoot my .458WM, but I would be using cast bullets under 2,000fps. Is that too much for the steel?
Ed, the big bore (.37 and up) shoot will be no scope and onto some sort/size gongs yet to be made. The range will be appropriate to that - not ultra-long.
The steel shoots that Dennis is talking about in this post will be at smaller steel targets. One will be for .22LR and at appropriate distance. The other will be somewhat "open" as to type of rifle, and at longer ranges.
In the above post, Dennis is qualifying the types of rifles he intends for that "open" shoot at steel.

Nice. will all three shoots be off the bench, or some combo of sitting & standing too?

If so, I can certainly lose with something else.
Ed
The 458 is not a problem, it is the bullets going 3300 fps that worry me. You can even shoot hard bullets out of the 458. I am going to bring my Lott.
I will send a PM out with more details. I am open to suggestions on the "open" shoot. I was thinking that we would shoot from any field position we want: prone, sitting, shooting sticks, standing etc. I would like to get away from the bench if possible. I don't mind bipods, sand bags, packs, somebody's back etc
I thought about brining a piece of carpet or something to lay on. We are limited in the available distance we can shoot out of the CG so I am wanting to make it a little more interesting. If we could go out to 5-600 yards, I would be all for using the bench.
I always have at least one surplus wool blanket in my truck, I can throw that down for folks that want to get low.
I am bringing my spotting scope, too, along with my laser rangefinder, but I think Ken's B&S and the old German rangefinders would be much more cool to use.
I went looking for my supply of old range golfballs and discovered that they had been disposed of by my lovely bride since I didn't play golf... So, if someone else can come up with some used golf balls, we can certainly hang those for targets.
if someone else can come up with some used golf balls, we can certainly hang those for targets.
Just don't throw 'em too high in the air.
I'm fervently hoping that one or two talented (or unabashed) guitarists'll bring their git-fiddles along for aprs la fte entertainment to mask some of the nether effects of any who might be surfeit (i e, bloated) from the expected and understandable over-enjoyment of certain animal and vegetable proteins.
So, if someone else can come up with some used golf balls, we can certainly hang those for targets. Ed
Ed, I will get some - do you have the fixins' for hanging them?
Paul,
I do. Another way of using them is to do a micro version of a Pin Shoot, using golf balls on a 2" x 4". The balls rest in shallow holes drilled in the board so that a hit on the board itself will not dislodge them, but a solid hit on the ball will. Shot at 25, 50, 75, and 100yds with .22lr rifles. One shot per ball, five balls per distance, ala Siluetas, best time and aggregate of hits wins. 25yd balls are shot offhand, all others are shooters choice of positions, offhand, kneeling, sitting, or prone. Sticks or bipods are acceptable for the 50, 75, and 100yd balls.

Interesting challenge, Ed - I like it. T'would take a while to set up and run, and quite a few targets per shooter. In the past, have been accused of having a lot of balls, but not likely to come across that many up here.
I am for starting with something informal, with the hanging balls - at a challenging distance - taking turns at trying to nail the nut.

On the map, Catron County is the fourth one (third BIG one) from the top almost square. Quemado is near the top and toward the west side (34 miles from Arizona). The Armijo Springs camp ground, where we'll gather, is about twenty air miles south of Quemado.
The shooting games are sounding interesting. The High Wall .45-90's a given for the big bore shoot, assuming I can get the tang sight sorted out. Or if not I'll have to find a receiver sight for the .375 H&H #1.
I have a really accurate 77/22, but if time's a factor then I might have to dig out the 10/22. Which needs a trigger job
Some load development/firelapping for the Kimber 7mm-08 Montana is overdue as well, and might be a good tuneup for hunting this year

Paul, Yes, it is a bit more complicated. I am all for more informal shooting matches as they offer less "down time" for the other participants. Quick & dirty is the name of the game. You need less balls for them as well.
Ken, It would be a lot of fun at 25yds with .22lr handguns! I think your Taurus would probably take that one.
My grandsons and I, shooting .22lr rifles yesterday, played a variation of an archery game called "Chase The Rabbit". One shooter put a hole in the target. The challenge was for the other shooters to put their bullet into that same hole. Closest one to the hole wins. The winner of that match gets to place the first hole, and again, everyone tries to put their shot into that hole. No waiting. Everyone can get a sight picture and fire when it is their turn. We went left-to-right firing order, so you always knew when to fire your shot. All shooting was at 35yds, offhand.
One of my old handgun games used a sheet of plywood or "beaver board" with nails spaced every 89 inches or so horizontally and vertically, with inch or so left exposed to hang clay "birds" on.
"Odd-manning" decided the sequence of shooters. If the first shooter shattered his first bird (with his first shot), he could take one shot at the next bird, and so on. Once he missed, it was the next shooter's turn.
When it got too easy for the best shooter (i e when he could clean the board or could exceed an agreed number of "kills" (10, IIRC) we increased the distance.
.22 handguns only, no optics, hind-leg erect, one hand.
With any luck, the nails were moderately safe, and the "birds" covered a lot of the holes.
With the new bio-degradable clay birds available now, they are an even more popular target for us. They are about the same size as a whitetail's heart, so they can be used for hunting practice, too.
Sounds like a lot of fun. How is the weather up there Paul and Ken? Have you had any sprinkles? Hopefully some rain before the gathering.Dave
Hi Dave. We need the rain, right now. Dry as an old bone up here - and unusually hot for 8k ft. The trees still look OK, but the grass is tan tinder.
I am hopeful, in that the higher heat normally helps usher in our summer rains, and we are getting some moisture in the air from the gulfs. Just waitin' and hopin' - and sure want plenty before August 8 when the gathering commences.
How is the weather up there Paul and Ken? Have you had any sprinkles?
Hopefully some rain before the gathering.
Weather is awfully random and spotty here, as you can see on the radar map on the weather link that I posted above. (Have you looked at it?)
Paul's hacienda is about 20 air miles south of here and about 1,0001,500 feet higher, so he and I often get different weather at the same time or the same weather at different times.
Quemado's in sort of a bowl, and precipitation often falls all around us and skips over us.
Paul's place is closer to the camp ground than mine is and at about the same elevation as the camp ground.
Yes, it is much thinner than the air I have adjusted to over the past couple of months in Houston. Some days I really wish I was back in NM. But, the job is good and the wife and children are happy.
What all of us SW states need is for a Cat 5 hurricane, larger than Katrina, to come up the Gulf and make landfall, traveling almost due West, right at Brownsville. The normal track for one of those would carry it all the way to AZ, with the eye turning North along I-25
Everyone from S. Texas to Kansas would get rain, with a large portion of it falling on the driest parts of the West. Mark Schubert would finally get to see his pastures turn green again. That big reservoir near Antonito, CO might even finally get some water.
Now there's an idea! We even have room for everyone to stay on the ranch. You can camp out, bunk up in the barn house, or stay in the big city of Gilmer, TX, pop. 4955, about twenty-five minutes away. They even have a WalMart!
Covered pavilion with a large fire pit/cooking grate, electric lights, and a view of the ponds.
My back pasture gives us 300yds to shoot across, there's two ponds stocked with bluegills & largemouth bass, and a few trails I've cut into the woods if you feel like a walk. Maybe even set up the "Donga Drill" back there.
Hmmmmm, gotta think about this. Maybe speak to the First Sergeant about being Hostess.
Ed
First things, first. We gotta go to Quemado! Then we can talk.

Age and infirmities have pretty much dealt me out of most of the games.
Big bore: Iron sights only. My 1895 Marlin has none since I cut the barrel to 20 inches. My 444 Marlin has open sights. I might could remove the scope and guess at which one of the front sights I'll see is the correct one. I've got a 50-50 chance of guessing right. [I think] I've never tried THAT since I got this floater in my shooting eye.
22rf : I've got a real accurate old Winchester 69A. With a cheap Loopie on it. I've never tried seeing the open sights on it.
Metal : My three main "deerandup" rifles all have "magnum" as a last name, so they're out.
Brilliant idea number one [for the day]....... I just bring the 244 Ackley and shoot it at metal and PD's.
New problem with that: 70 gr. NBT at 3744, or 55 gr NBT at 4095. Both loads will outshoot me.
Since we won't have live PD's for spectacular blow-ups, I'll just stick with the slower load. They'll sound louder if I luck out and hit a steel target.
Arthritis and handguns are a marriage conceived by the Debbul hisself, so I'll just avoid embarrassing myself in THAT arena.
I made Quemado last year, of course I was a little closer then. My trip to Sierra Vista got canceled at the last minute due to family issues. Now, with a new job, I won't make Quemado this year.
East Texas at Ed's and Quemado next year definitely.
My front gate happens to be a twenty-eight mile, thirty-five minute drive from the Lake Fork boat launch just north of Quitman. Same time and distance to my favorite boat launch on Lake O' The Pines, too.
Yes, there's a sounder of ten or so that have been passing through our place on an irregular basis (~100-125lb), and a buddy of mine has permission to hunt a dairy not far from here, but the shots are in the 350-500yd range, just before sunset.
The owner of the dairy is very particular about who hunts his place as there are a bunch of replacement heifers in that same pasture and some of those hogs look like Hampshires. Since he's milking Holsteins, he doesn't trust many folks to tell a week old Holstein calf from a mature Hampshire sow at 500yds right at dark.
If we DO have a gathering here, I'm sure we can scare up some crow shooting and possible a coyote stand or two on our place. Lots of crows here and I have been holding off on using my secret weapon on them, looking for the right time.
There are three packs of coyotes within a mile of here. On some nights you can hear all three start singing right at dark from three different quadrants of the compass.
I assume you mean four-legged feral hogs. Not two-legged or two-wheeled ones.
Yes the Four-Legged hogs.
Lake Fork is pretty famous for hawgs with fins
Yes, it is. Lake O'The Pines has some finned hawgs, too, but doesn't get the pressure that Fork does. We are also about forty minutes from Lake Bob Sandlin. We are 90 minutes from Lake Palestine, about the same from Wright Patman Lake and Caddo Lake. Our local city lake, Gilmer Lake is 1,100ac of great crappie and decent bass fishing. It is fifteen minutes from my front gate to the boat launch.
My measly two, 1ac+ ponds only have 6-7lb largemouth bass, bluegills, and something the locals call a "warmouth perch" or "Goggle eye", which looks and fights a lot like a smallmouth bass, just not as big. The two ponds are about fifty yards from where I am sitting right now.
Will plan on bringing a pile of the blue cheeseburgers like last time. Probably won't bring a grill this time, though, as we won't have as much space. Will stick to a Coleman stove and camp out. Looking forward to seeing everybody again.
The ranger office for this district is right across the street from my front door 1-575-773-4678. Good maps showing all the horse trails should be available there, and for sure you can get the latest official USFS skinny there.
The last two times when I was on any kind of horse, I got "throwed" or desperately needed help to stay on.
I slid too far back on my stitching horse, and it tipped backward under me. I'm probably the only leather-worker in history who got dumped by a stitching horse.
I was about to get "throwed" off the other one was hanging on desperately when the clerk from Radio Shack came out and unplugged it.
Folks use and ride horses in the forest here frequently - miles and miles of great riding country. There would be places near camp to tie/corral them - at a reasonable distance of course - and hope they aren't spooked by lots of shooting near camp.
I do not know the rules, if any, regarding horses brought in from other states.
A lot of states have requirements regarding a recent Coggins Test for transport across state lines, some require proof of certain vaccinations as well.
It is just responsible ownership to have all that up to date, anyway.
Barbara hauls hers all over the country. She has a notebook for each horse that she keeps all of that info in. I'll ask her where she looks to find out a particular area's regulations & requirements.
For our place, we have to see a current Coggins before a horse comes off of a trailer.
One of the jury panels that I was on was being voir dired. The case obviously had a lot to do with drinking alcohol. The judge asked us whether any of us did NOT drink alcohol.
Several of us raised our hands.
The judge then asked us to stand up, one at a time, to say our names, and to say WHY we didn't drink alcohol.
When my turn came, I said that I just didn't care for the taste or the cost.
The judge grinned and said that those were the two best reasons that he'd ever heard.
While you guys are dealing with your alchohol issues - - - -
it's started a little bit of summer raining up this way. Not a lot yet, but enough to wet the ground a few times and inspire some grass to get going - - - -
and enough to inspire hope and maybe expectation that some substantial summer rains may start early and get us in good shape for the Campfire gathering on August 9-11.
SO - if you are planning to gather and have not yet said "I'm in", think about doing so. Our final "known" list will be put on here about July 5, and we will start the private PM after checking that.

It was strong enough here, for a while, to be heard on the roof.
Radar indicates that the southern half of Catron County is getting lots of heavy rain, and suggests that more rain may be coming over our way from eastern Arizona.
HERE WE GO. Shown below is the best effort at an accumulated listing (from this thread) of all who have indicated that they will be at the gathering. Those who expressed "maybe" are shown with "?". Sorry if we missed anyone - please see below. Any on the current list who can't come? Please so advise.
To add your name, kindly let us know here soon because the next step is the group PM to all listed (including "maybes". In that thread we will do our serious planning/communicating, share personal contact info, details, etc.
It seems difficult (if not impossible) to add a name to a group PM once it is established, so please chime in if you want to be included.
ALL ABOARD !!

I've PMed a special personal invitation to my several Campfire detractors and must now say it openly I'll stay home if anybody is staying away from the August festivities because of my planned presence there.
I came to this point when three of my friends told me, some time ago, that they weren't coming because three other friends of mine were planning to be among us. I'd hate to be such a stumbling block to anybody.
So far, several of those whom I invited with that private promise have removed themselves from the PM without responding. So I don't know whether they might be coming. I hope that they are.
Too bad! I'm still convinced that any one of them would add worlds more to the gathering than I can. And can enter into the fellowship and get more out of it than I can.
So the offer still holds. Just let me know privately please.
It'll be a private matter between just you and me. I promise.
These gatherings are not junior high school dances - no need or space for interpersonal drama. Avoid that - keep the bar high.
If you are big and mature enough to handle some differencews of views and styles, see the list and decide if you want to spend a worthwhile weekend with what have proven to be fine folks. Please leave it at that.

Just try to say that to my face!!!! {Kidding}
Its a great time with great folks. Everyone who wants to be there is welcome!
Glad you good folks are willing to put up with a sh*tkickin, backwoods NH yankee for a weekend, Now my wife on the other hand, she is the picture of urbane sophistication!

Haven't been around one of those "sh*tkickin, backwoods NH yankee" types since the 50s when I was in college up that way. Should be nice to re-acquaint. And, if your lady really is the picture you describe, maybe you had better post the pic so we will know what one of those looks like.
We'll wait through the weekend for anyone else who wants to be on the list - probably get the PM together by next Tuesday. That'll be a month before the event.
I've been getting small amounts of rain here, not even enough to settle the dust, but lots of thunder and lightning. followed by dense smoke coming from the silver fire, I'm assuming.
Gene - that lyin' contest may start as soon as 2 guys arrive - so better be early.
I've been practicing a bit. I'm good enough to bring Gene to tears. Why, last time we went prairie dog hunting he started tearing up when I pulled up. He sobbed the whole time we hunted just from the beauty of the West Texas cow pasture. In fact, he cried so much the County Commissioners lifted the burn ban and the rancher had to disconnect the irrigation system so the fields wouldn't flood. He gave his dog a shower while petting her. I had to keep my boots on while I slept so they wouldn't float away during the night.
He really is a quiet, sensitive guy who is in touch with his inner feelings.

Hey Ed - your maudlin post almost made me shed a tear, and I've never even met Gene.

DAMMIT PEOPLE SHOULD GO TO SOCIAL EVENTS EVEN IF PEOPLE WHO DON'T LIKE YOU ARE GONNA BE THERE
I mean, what if they've been right all along?
Which is why I'm gonna show up....
Prob'ly gonna bring wife and dog on account of ever'body likes them better'n me anyhoo....
Prolly can't leave here before late Thursday, expect to roll in noonish Friday.
Gonna bring....
.62 cal. smoothbore flinter .50 cal. "poorboy" Southern-style flinter longrifle. .22/20 gauge "Camper's Companion Savage Mod. 24 (never leave home without it). A couple of handguns, not sure which. I got a ,30-30 Marlin straight-stocked 336 wearing a Burris Scout Scope I could bring. Ditto on a .357 Marlin 1894 w/Williams peep.
Only need a patch of ground upon which to sleep and a shower. This can be in a campground.
I'll post a sign up sheet fer the 5:30am birding tours.
what are the "sleeping arraignments?".....gonna be tight on funds for my trip.....easy enough to haul down a sleeping bag with me.....all i need is a patch of floor somewhere....

If you show up here we have a crew cab to sleep in if need be
The campground we hope/expect to use is very nice, but the camping conditions are somewhat spartan. There is a USFS maintained toilet and there are tables/cook pits. That's it.
There are campgrounds at Quemado Lake (about 10 miles distant) but I don't think there are showers there. The nearest for sure motel/shower/etc. facility is about 21 miles up the road in Q. Some do stay there, and I think that those are the only folks who shower during the gathering.
Some sleep in campers and pickup beds (or cabs), some sleep in utility trailers, some sleep in tents and at least one sleeps in a hammock. Don't know if anyone has slept plain on the ground, but that would work unless we get some rain - for which we all are hoping.
Birdwatcher - do we place your name on the attendee list? Would be pleased if you were to come.

You should really go to the Campfire Hog Hunt next year. You & NH K9 would get along famously
Which can happen. When you see a "elk crossing" sign, know that the big b******s really do cross there and they will scare the chit outta you, even if you miss them!

Guess I'm gonna hafta say it again, for the umpety-teenth time
A single and a double bed here, plus plenty of floor space
plus walk-in sit-down tub, washer, and dryer.
Sorry, no maid service, no room service, no beer, no booze, no coffee, no snoring provided.
Right in town, so easy to find that CCCC even manages to find it now 'n' then.
One time DARBY, Ken and I were coming back from CCCCs to Ken's house at night and suddenly there was a herd in the road... I deftly maneuvered through them at 50 mph easily missing them by 2 inchs.
Darby won't ride with me anymore... LOL... what I have to do to make him drive and use his gas...
It's the same weekend as Speedweek at the Bonneville Salt Flats. Joe crews a buddy's motorcycle there.
I heard Darby once saw guy on the corner playing guitar. Down on his luck the fellow had the case open in hopes for some money. Darby pitched in a dollar and took back three quarters.

Kent
In my case it was just one bull. And he was a hell of a bull. I have the distinct memory of looking UP at his head, from my driver's seat, as I was swerving to miss him. Lucky for me he spun a 180 and didn't try to beat me across the road. I think getting hit by an F150 might just pizz him off
Ed didn't tell y'all all the story. The reason I was brought to tears was that on the way to our camphouse I had to drive right next to a barbed wire fence whereupon some barbarian had hung the poor lifeless bodies of some once proud, graceful, free roaming, coyotes.
It was just a horrible experience that Ed was spared by virtue of coming in on a different road. But I did manage to cowboy up and get some decent pictures of the prairie dogs.
Cute little fellers, I could watch 'em all day :
Oh.. as far as what I'm bringing, I'll have my current knitting project, of course, and.... are there any trees where I can hang my quilting frames?
I suppose this would be a good time to defend my reputation against financial slurs from the jealous ragpicking chillins. These detractors all reside in way-too-hot areas that cause varying amounts of irreversible brain damage. Cheap indeed...how dare you...
Other than not having to deal with the Valley Boys, I am sorry I will not be attending this show. Looks like there will be many new faces - folks I would really like to meet. New friends always have new bee ess stories to listen to.
I am sure you newcomers will thoroughly enjoy watching Kent and Tommy do their well-rehearsed Macarena, at least the first five or six times they perform it. It gets really old as the evening wears on, even when they change costumes and make-up.
Hoping you newcomers have a fine weekend...and I also hope the rest of you twinks can find someone else to be the butt of your jokes.
Don't have curdog4570, or anyone else, sent me emails at your request because I have you on ignore.
There is a reason I have you on ignore, I don't give a flying [bleep] what you have to say or think, so please stop having others try to contact me for you.
When my big blue book (Designing and Forming Custom Cartridges) went out of print several years ago, it was soon rated "rare," and used-book prices soared to the insanely ridiculous price of $800 a copy.
It was never worth even a significant fraction of that much, so I gave it my friends at www.huntingtons.com to be republished.
It's available there (item 4999) for $59.98.
If you bring a copy to Quemado, I'll sign it to you then you won't be able to return it to get your money back.

Dang Darby you are gonna miss meeting me not much of a loss that.......... just send beer money
Joe ("DARBY") isn't gonna be here, but he's still "Chancellor of the Exchequer" for the fellowship fund.
So if you have a few spare shekelim, drop 'em in a bucket, a boot, a jar, or something at the shindig (or send 'em to Joe) so that we who cherish the company of our far-off buddies can help 'em to get here.
This summer's bash promises, so far, to be the best ever with more ladies, more kids, plus horseback-riding and bird-watching. My ol' blood pump is full already.
And the likelihood that we'll have good weather (and plenty of elk and other good photo grist to help us remember all the good memories that we'd never forget anyway).
Still, my heart hangs low with the longing that so many of our fellows who ought to be here won't be.
Therefore two notions for y'all to contemplate 'n' ponder
A moment of silence for those absentees who'd add so much to our gathering and get so much from it
A special effort to get, every year, at least one of our across-the-big-moat buddies over here for some good ol' 'Merican fellowship
This thread most likely will nosedive very soon as we go into the PM stage. I don't know how to add names beyond the original participants in a PM, so please chime in here VERY soon if you are planning to be at the gathering.

Bump. I might bring my girl friend. Dont worry, we'll set up the tent down sawmill canyon someplace
You have a girlfriend?!?! A real, live, carbon-based, oxygen breathing, bipedal, hominid girlfriend? Not vinyl? Glad to hear it!!! I'm sure the A.P.D. Vice Squad was tired of seeing you in the porn shops. Ed
Who is worried? Come to think of it, Sawmill Canyon is only about 2 miles away - probably not far enough.
though I had good thoughts of attending - i'm glad I didnt make a bunch of posts indicating I'm gonna make it this time.
we are soon to be the proud owners of an 80 acre parcel in northern az. as a matter of fact its within 1/4 mile of our current property.
we need to go up to the property this weekend and then we need to be meet with the title co. and go to the county court to finalize this event and get deed recorded pay minor back taxs so it will be officially ours . that's on Monday a.m.
I hope all who attend have a great time and enjoy the terrific company of fellow gun / shootin and trash talkin gents which coincides with these events.
sorry guys and gals
I also apologize to you Ken - I have been unable to get a hold of the friend whom said he would buy the 22-250 ammo. I've been sending emails for over a week , with no replys.
Everyone have a safe trip and enjoy the good times! so in spirit of this event -- I'll take my 788/ 223 and try to pop a few yotes this trip too!
I had hoped to make a surprise guest appearance - oops maybe next getogether Gary
