We often debate that but now that so many guys are seeing the 7mm Rem for what it is the demand gets less each year.

One place the the 300 Win might really shine is with the new LRX bullets. I always thought the 30 cal x seemed to hit a little harder due to the greater frontal area in a bullet like the X after it has stopped expanding and is behaving like a solid.

They are sending me 30s with the proto 7s and we will see.

I am fully aware you want to know whose barrel I use but I am not going to tell you.

I stand behind the performance of each gun, not the barrel maker.

You want to know who makes the best barrel just buy a test batch of barrels from each maker, in each of the twist and land/groove configurations that might be applicable and then chamber them up and test to your heart content.

It gets pretty pricey but you sure will learn a lot.

Both #3 and #6 are wearing QRs with 20 MOA. That is the mount we use the most, although some guys prefer the PRW. Can have it either way.

Back in August I ended up with this pile that were all ready at the same time and most of these had the 20 MOA QR.


It usually does not work that I have so many ready at the same time but it was before hunting season and show season has me behind right now.

Just finished my Faux Greybull. Now we see if it can "get the hits"..

John: A couple of questions. It looks like your customers are the most fond of the 7. It sounds as you prefer the 6.5.? It looks to me like the 7 w/ 168's or even 180's would be hard to beat. I just about don't use my 6.5 in favor of my sevens. Am I missing something? 180 through the chest of a big bull seems more comforting than 140 to me. For elk I still always take my 300RUM w/ 185's. The more I shoot the more I realize it is all about wind.. I still have several 30's. I will be interested in your opinion of the new LRX bullets.

John: Take this FWIW These look nice for a varmint rifle, but for a hunting rifle I would lose about 3# off stock, fill, and scope. Perhaps a skeleton handle to offset. And perhaps add a wind reading course to the "knobs".

The 7 seems to be the best fit for most guys and the 180 VLD is hard to beat. I kind of like the 264 140 VLD and have had great luck with it on elk. The reason I think most guys choose the 7 is they do feel a little more comfortable with a little heavier bullet.

Will try and get to the LRX after these last shows are over and I get some samples. The 7s were supposed to be tipped this week so hopefully we will see some soon.

We do build a little heavier than some but we shoot a little further than most.



The heaviest rifle I am willing to pack is 10lbs or so unloaded. Under good conditions I can take that to 1000yds or so. I can�t shoot lighter rifles as well.

So many things come into play beyond just weight (stock ergonomics being near the top).

I can build a lighter rifle but, for my limited shooting ability, getting below 8 � lbs seem like a big drop in shootability under field conditions. I try and only build what I can actually shoot up to the level shown in the videos.

My line of thinking is not how light a rifle can I shoot, but how heavy will I carry. 10lbs never stopped me from getting to the top of our mountains. (My fat ass has been a real drag though at times)

real men shoot rifles with some weight to them, I totally agree on the weight. one funny thing is I see most guys that want the super light rifles live back east or in the south where the longest hike they will take is to the deer stand above the deer feeder. I personally like a rifle to be about 8-8.25#'s with no scope or ammo in it. add a 1# scope a sling and some rings I am probably at close to 10#'s in my preferred choice.

the other thing is I think it helps to have a little weight in the barrel, I like a #5 barrel. long range hunting rifles have to shoot under a variety of conditions a heavier barrel will add more consistency.

I understand your wanting a definitive number, but your question is similar to a 5 year old asking �How high is high� or maybe more like �How far is too far�.

It is not uncommon for newbie�s to Long Range (Such as yourself) to think distance is the only measure of difficulty in a particular shot in the field.

Many other factors come into play and can have as much or more influence than just the range to the target.

Things like shooting position, hunters stress level, wind both affecting the bullets flight and buffeting the shoot, time for the shot, ect.

If you want to get into shooting in the field at extended distance you are going to have to get out, do a lot of shooting, and see some of this for yourself and learning that distance is but one factor in field shooting and sometimes not even the most important. When you put in the time and finally make a nice clean kill at long range we will all be so proud of you.

The real big sheep show is in Vegas on the 23rd (OVIS Grand Slam). I did do the Reno version last year but that was a bust.

The FNAWS sheep show in Reno was by far and away the worst show I have ever done concerning attendance and from my stand point sales.

I had 2 guys buy scopes on the last day and I almost told them to go to the website and order so i could actually say the show was a complete bust.

We normally do quite a bit of buisness at all the shows we do (Dalllas SCI , SCI, SFW/Mule Deer, NRA, ISE, Harrisburg, RMEF) but man that was a wreck.

I hope your buddy did well and the show works for anyone who was there but in my view FNAWS did not need to split from SFW and start a new show.

Hunted the same hill as a guy with a 12 man guide crew this past season. He was running 10 spotters. Luckiely for him he paided for guides and I didn't draw the 14 pref pt tag. Could have killed his bull easy within 150 yards. Watched him finally make it happen after a spotter from over a mile away finally figured out what I was looking at and walk him and his walking guide in.

There was talk amongst them (hunter and guides) about only packing out the head and hide. I heard it over the radio. Started with something like, can't we get the quads in there. I packed out my spike elk quarters from a few canyons further down the trail two days later.

The whole "Big Gang, Found the bull before the hunter shows up" thing is not for everyone. I am not here to judge but I doubt many are game for round 2.

That was the rifle I offered to send to Mackay for R&D,figuring it a like weight to the schit you are yacking about and one which would be easily fed over the counter. Nuttin' more,nuttin' less...though I've probably another rifle or two,besides it.

IMO a good long range setup goes under the idea of stacking pennies, a little here and a little there adds up to a lot. if your happy with an MOA rifle and shooting to 4-500 yards a light rifle will do it. beyond that little things really start to matter.

its the same reason why the military doesn't send out snipers with a 6# kimber.

I also own light rifles and given the right hunt and conditions they are a better choice. but given the typical western style hunting utah, idaho, wyoming, etc I like a bit heavier rifle. I don't think anyone is saying hunting mountain goats or sheep is best with a 10# gun.

High volume and off hand shooting have as much to do with barrel wieght as anything. If all snipers ever did was one shot one kill like in the movies a kimber would be a hell of a lot easier to work with.

I love my Brux and they do very well. I will say again that it really does not matter whos name is on the tube within reason. I dont care if Burns is running Brux, Pacnor, Rock, Bartlein etc, a good tube is a good tube.

Regarding weight I have found the Montana was a little to light. I had two, a .308 and a .260. I found that in field positions I was not as consistent with them as I was with heavier rifles. It was not the stock fit, it is probably the single best stock I have ever handled for matching my body. For me I found follow through is far more critical with the fly weights. I applaud Stick and others who do well with them, they just were not for me. Sticking a heavier tube on a Model 7 made a big difference for me and my Tikka T3 lites have the best balance for me. On a recent build I went to far the other way, put a 26" heavy palma contour on a rifle built for steel matches and it was a bit to much, feels slow on transitions from target to target when shooting anything other than prone. I shot a twin to my rifle with a light palma contour and the difference was very apparent.

I can understand Burns reluctance to mention parts but did I miss it where an accuracy standard was specified?

1/2 MOA is pretty easy to tell customers and it pretty easy to deliver. Our standard answer is it shoots as good as you think it should.

Most guys know how well a rifle like this should shoot.

Stopped by Barnes on my way to Vegas. They were shooting LRXs in the tunnel and had just tipped the 7s.

They agreed to run some proto 168s and this is where my interest really lies. The 145gr 7 is a little light for me but with the reduced expansion window it shuld be a great bullet for many. I am still looking forward to some testng with the 145 but the 168 might be just the ticket if you have to hunt in a lead free area or you prefer the X style terminal preformance.

Looks more like 6 one should skip, to me.

Why don't you just tell guys that you use any custom tube you can conveniently get your hands on for your "custom rifles" John? I mean c'mon man.

Ok I will throw this one out there for anyone who cares to chime in. I prefer to have a build with known parts, even if I dont spec it usually a smith will have a preference for certain brands because he likes the fit, machines better or he gets a bulk discount. In my last build I was gonna go with one barrel and my smith liked the Brux so thats what he went with. Another specific example is GAP, you can go to their site for one of their builds and it tells you exactly who makes the action, barrel, stock etc...

Once a build gets to the user does it matter whos name is stamped on the components? I understand a stock being a very personal choice but if the rifles delivers the expected results, in this case John says an easy 1/2moa, does it really matter if the barrel came from a tiny shop or is a Bartlein (or Kreiger or anyone else you wanna mention)? And on the other end if the performance is not there I could care less whos name is on the components unless the builder was simply incompentent and jacked up good parts.

Sorry if its a ramble, Im about three vicodin in and Im closing one eye to see the keys to type.

He is putting a whole system together that has worked well for him, taken them to the range and proved them so that the guy who is cashing out for them knows he is getting what he paid for. I can't tell you how many "custom" rifles I have seen that were never tested for accuracy and feeding. In fact, Barsness told me one time that of all the custom (semi-custom) rifles he has been sent for T&E only ONE was ready to hunt as it arrived! Maybe that has changed since he told me this, I dunno.

Not everyone can put something together that will work like this. Just putting a bunch of quality components together doesn't mean that you are going to have a reliable tack-driver etc. Some recipes are better than others. I do things my way and it works for me. Doesn't mean my way is best, doesn't mean that his way is wrong. People buy it and apparently are happy. Several of you would begrudge him for selling something to someone that you think you could build for less! Get over it.

It looks pretty close to the BC light tactical I run. Quick skim coat with 10110 and the LT was good to go, $150 out of the classifieds did not hurt either. I dont jump out of planes with it and the stock fits me well. I put this one on my surgeon while waiting for the Manners. The stock has never let me down and when the Manners finally got here I flipped it for a profit and have not looked back.

I did the tan cerakote and my kids did the stock work. Only load I use is the 115 Dtac pushed by Ramshot Hunter for 2950fps. Im such a softy I even had the smith add a brake because I like to see all my hits at steel matches. Bottom target is rounds 7-10. After getting on paper at 100 I dialed by the numbers and put three rounds into the top corner of the steel at 1000yards. In all honesty I did not lazer the range, the owner said it was 1000, I dialed for 1000 and it hit high enough it could be about 955.755 yards.

None of this matters. When Mr. Burns gets back to his shop and checks his financial records he'll verify what I know; limp schtick is a lying little gimp.

Thanks for pointing out that we do have a 100% satisfaction guarantee and even if a guy gets confused (or in your case can�t figure out the difference) and thinks he is ordering a A5 we would give him a refund.

What I like the most about this is 1) John doesn't have to prove anything. You just take his word that no stocks bought from and shipped to Alaska were ever returned. But you want names from Big Stick. If that isn't a double standard I don't know what is. Also comparing him and his product to Rick is just plain crazy. Rick sells a great stock at a discounted price to the forum members. I'm not a member on ARAIG. I am a member on another board where limp schtick and I went through basically the same drill as here...ONCE. The second time it started the board owner advised us to stop or we'd be banned. I stopped. Limp schtick is banned.
