Here are the plans for our 2014 Campfire Hog Hunt.
Schedule: Wednesday,5 March: Arrive in the afternoon. Thursday,Friday,Saturday, 6,7,8 March:Hunt Sunday,9 March: Leave in the morning
Price: $695 for hunters $250 for non-hunters
Maximum number of participants and lodging: 31 in the cabins, all in bottom bunks. 3 couples in the house.
Preferences: Prior attendees and their relatives get first preference. Newbees get second preference if there are any spots left open.
Making a reservation: Checks will be made out to Wilderness and sent to Pugs. This is to, hopefully, keep the interlopers out who have been showing up and taking our spaces. The 24HCF will have exclusive use of the cabins and the hunting.
Traditions: We'll have the traditional "bring your own food" on Wednesday evening. Some of our incredibly generous hunters bring lots of great food for our opening evening together. Two smoked hog dinners will take place on Thursday and Saturday(or maybe Friday). More info to follow.
Questions/Suggestions: Please let me know if you have any. Either I or our members can respond.
Hope all is well with you and yours, and that you have a great 2013 hunting season.
HugAJackass, Yes, you may bring moonshine and cigars. Both would be most welcome.
Steve
he is asking for his lovely wife.....shoulda seen the look of disappointment on her face every time she was asked to share the apple pie....she did not want to give it up
plane tickets from Billings to Nashville actually arent as bad as i thought.....maybe i can squeeze in all 3 trips....hold a spot for me right now, ill know for sure in plenty enough time that if i have to give mine up someone can grab the spot.....
Looking forward to meeting a bunch of ya and killin' a hog.
I'll be a dirty black bastard from pakistan, heck Paul, just read Rattler may not make it this year , you may have to take his double barreled pig rifle and use it if ya wanna.

I'll choot it! Heck I'll choot anything at least once.
Steve, I'd like to be on the seconds list. Good chance my son and I can make this trip. BTW, that 7x57 I mentioned at the DC lunch shoots aok. Found good accuracy w/ imr4064. I'd sure like to shoot a pig with this rifle!

It's an old British double rifle chambered in 303 British, no recoil at all.
Oh yeah! I intend to attend and to bring Tide Jr. this year. This is an event not to be missed.
I go mostly so i can hunt with my son and he loves all the Food and Drinks. He says the guys from this forum are the best guys he has hunted and shared a table with . He loves it.

Fly into Schenectady and you can ride 14 hours with Jim and I. Hell, fly into Manchester and ride all 18 with me
Gonna have to miss it. Daughter's spring training road trip is to Tucson in March. Momma and I are taking a week and traveling with the team. Gonna watch 'em kick some Sunbelt azz on the softball fields.
I will bring plenty of both and Pat you are correct. I may even try some Mango. Kinda like the Jimmy Buffett song with a slight change "The Last Mango in Monterey".

if i make it i wont be hunting.....want to make Eds get together in Texas and the wife is planning a trip to Seattle, both these in April so thats a hell of alot of traveling in a short time and im working on a finite budget
My brother bought a scope from Dr. Howell at the Quemado gathering, he's now trying to figure out what to put it on so I can shoot a pig with it
Will be nice to get to meet your Bro. Tex.
Aint good enough with my long bow yet Bea, still averaging paper plate size groups at 15 yards , think I'm having trouble with that 'becoming the mystical arrow' BS.
Hope ya can make it too Jorge, be nice to finally shake your hand, maybe you can stop by and pick up that TLee guy on the way through.
Evil Twin is the warden at the Disciplinary Barracks who rules with an iron hand by sleeping a lot. His only requirement is that everyone has to have too much fun. And they do.
chit, the bottle lasted about 15 minutes. I only got a couple sips myself! 3 bottles minimum next time for the disciplinary barracks. I'll leave the Pusser's rum for the masters quarters
Ed-Many Letters was trying to find some around his place, and no one had it, so I guess it's a Central/South Texas thing.

I just hope you are willing to take pre paid orders for the glorious nectar leading up to the shindig.

My favorite silly juice dispensary now carries it.
I'd love to make it! I just don't know yet. That time of year is very difficult as I have several training conferences to attend. I would have to spend all night Friday night traveling to the Hunt and all day Sunday getting back. That is what has prevented me from coming the last couple of years.
10-4, if ya make it, I'll bring one of my Sharps for you to hunt with if ya wanna bust a pig with it.
Gunner
Bastid!
As if I need more encouragement.
Ed
, the BOOM of the HOLY BLACK and the bacon on the ground will be just enough, specially if ET and Sharpsguy are there to lend additional encouragement.
Also, I'll be driving a Tacoma crew cab, so I've got room for a couple of passengers and can pick up folks in St. Louis or Nashville, as long as each doesn't have more than three or so pieces of luggage.
And I'd be proud to bunk in the "Disciplinary Barracks".
skeezix things work out we can ride together. can your yoter haul 50 cases of liquid gold?
Oh HELL yes!! We can stack the bed high and lash it down, and throw all our huntin' schit in the back seat. I'll borry a utility trailer if needed. It'll tow 6500 lbs. Reckon that'll be enough?
Last year I got no apple or cherry pie,no maple syrup and no preseves
I hope you got the Kettle One I brought...I never got around to opening it.
you came close enough to dying without it
Hypoglycemia is kinda like survival of the fittest for brain cells. It's good to kill off the weak ones on occasion so the others are stronger...or something like that...
Ive been out of town for the past week or so, and just caught this. It would seem like you guys are holding the hunt at a time when I can actually get there....any room for a newby?

No. But you're certainly welcome. I'll have my brother bring his a-bolt .270 for you.
Steve, at first blush, it looks doable, especially if I can get someone to pick me up at the Nashville Airport and drop me off. If not, theres always Rental cars!
On second thought,, a rental might not be a bad idea. Get something that will fit on the "roads" and the extra insurance..........drive-by with Gunner's double has merit.
I'm in. Calling dibs on a rack in the disciplinary barracks. I'll try to locate some 50-70 rounds for the 'little' Sharps between now and then. (If anyone can assist with this, any help would be gratefully appreciated.)
If you can make it to the hunt, there will be a place for you.
Steve
Steve, if you are serious...I understand past attendees get preference, and Im havent been there before.....but if you can squirrel me in, Ill start sending checks and making reservations!
Im cool as long as Im not in an upper bunk...( Got the old man BEP thing going on, frequents trips at nite... )
a Gatorade bottle is your friend Tom
an old man told me
yeah so what that he's the one that looks at me in the mirror
ain't nothin to help the bottom bunk guy sleep better than to hear whiz hitting the bottom of a plastic bottle, right above his head, in the middle of the night!
Too bad YOU couldn't make it down Randy. It would take us all of 3 minutes to give you a complete overhaul attitude adjustment! So long as ya didn't mind hanging out wid a bunch of overgrown small boys that drink!
would be a hoot Mac, would love to come down and join the reprobates
I'm hopin for 2015, FTF with some of you guys on here is on my bucket list and the hog hunt seems one of the very best way to meet a bunch of the guys I've come to admire from this place
but it's gonna have to wait for me, we've traveled a lot this year for momma's treatments, went to Seattle week or so ago in celebration of her successfully completing them and headed to my mom's for Xmas and then on the way home we're gonna hook a left turn and head to Hawaii for a week or so.
Then when we get home I'm going to open a new biz, it'll take me at least a year to get staffing in place to feel comfortable leaving the place. Looking forward to gettin back to work, though I probably would have done okay as a trust fund kid too!
may have to mention that oversight to mom when I see her.
but man o man I can't think of a much better time than hanging out with a bunch of youse guys, shooting cool guns during the day and shooting some BS in the evenings.
but if the creek don't rise, there's more than a few of you here that I fully intend to shake your hands and buy you a beverage before this party is over
I look forward to readin the exploits of the hog hunt, though I'm a bit worried about rockchucker (Bobby) is gonna tire of using sharp bladed tools to kill a hog and will end up strangling one with his shoestrings!
Tom...we'll stay at a hotel on the 4th but not on the evening before departure. We generally just leave camp early enough to catch our flights. It's why I asked if you guys needed for me to consider a later return flight because I didn't want you guys sitting at a airport for longer than necessary.
It's great you're tagging along, Tom. It's a fantastic, very fast 3 1/2 days.
If you ever wondered about whether the guys at the Fire took care of each other, check out isaac's post.
Bob's generosity and thoughtfulness are well known, and once again he is there for us.
I think it tends to be forgotten, that there are far more kind and decent people here at the Fire who are willing to help each other, than there are flaming anal orifices.

Thanks mucho Bob, Ill look at getting in on the fourth and you can tell me where to go...
( Something I'm SURE you'll want to do before this trip is over! )
Sheridan the only airfare Ive checked so far is out of Helena. Ill look into Bozo as well, often times if I fly out of there its a huge discount. Dont axe me why..
I'll be picking you up so I will simply take you to your hotel of choice thereafter. We'll be staying at the Nashville Hilton...Downtown.
If you pick a different hotel,we'll just all meet up for dinner and a evening on the town. Great music town, Tom. In Nashville, they even have excellent bands playing at Pizza Hut.

huh, they kick you down to Billings or where do you go from Helena?
its shooting fish in a barrel.....but the whole weekend is a ton of fun....i wont be hunting cause its the only way ill prolly be able to make the trip work....
Up before 6am on a Saturday. Hardly lawyerin hours, unless your really putting the screws to someone.
Your excuse? I'm up to try and get 30 minutes at the range for the last .257 and 7-08 checks before deer season in Ky in a couple weeks. After playing with loads all summer I keep wondering if I got them back to zero for the hunting loads.
do they have a good range where we could bring some toys to show off? I want someone to bring a double 450 or 470. I wanna shoot one, actually, no I don't cuz i'll want one more

last year there as far as doubles there was a 303, a 500 and a 577.....and an 8 bore muzzleloading rifle.....and a hell of alot of Sharps and Pat had a heck of a 45-90 high wall....
The plan for this year is that deposit checks from those who have hunted with us previously should be made out to Wilderness but sent to Pugs during the 1st 10 days of January. If there is room for newbies, and I think there will be, those checks should get to Pugs by the following week. This is being done to keep the interlopers from outside the Fire from showing up. Wilderness has promised that we will have the place to ourselves and we want to make sure that is the case.
If you have any questions, you can ask them here or PM me.
Hey Jason, sorry you can't make it. Your jolly disposition will be missed as will the cheese curds and Leinies, man. Next time, though, you're making it down. (sheesh, will have to start scrounging up Leinie's early this spring).

I swung by the likker emporium tonight, and picked up a couple of bottles of RC. It is, after all, deer season coming up, and the landowner likes it, too
I was surprised how many different Texas beverages are now on the market. Wine and beer have been around for a long time, but there's now varieties of Rye whiskey, even vodka made in Texas. RC is a given for the disciplinary barracks, but I wonder what I should bring for the master's quarters? (Buff Trace is a given, for the Poobah, of course)

I am leaning about 75 % toward coming. Will fly and leve the pretty wifey at home this time. If room allows I would like to bring my cousin Tim Claiborne, and I was thinking about inviting my dad and son as well. How are we doing for space so far?
Not going to bring a pile of 'for sale' swap meet guns this time. DO plan on bringing and hunting with my 10mm again and for a rifle my new to me Model 71 Deluxe in 348WCF. I just loaded up a pile of ammo with the Barnes 250gr Original style i.e. pure copper .032 thick jackets and 100% lead (no tin or antimony added to the cores) bullets and want to try them out. I already know that the 10mm with my 'warmish' <G> handloads works great on hogs.
Hoping to see ya'll there again and be more a part of the whole goings on by staying in the regular housing and such.
Who would like to, and be able to, give me or us a ride from and to the airport? No more 6,000 mile drives for this little pig blaster.....
Do want to come in early and check out the Nashville music row scene again, that was one of the best parts!
Prior hunters and their relatives get first preference. Your father, son and cousin would be most welcome.
The last couple of years the guys flying into Nashville and those driving by it figured out a way to car pool to Wilderness. If there are four of you in your party, that could be somewhat difficult. You may want to consider renting a car.

Steve, I'm interested...if there is a list of newbies for leftover spots, please put me on it and I'll keep checking the thread. thnx
You're in the right proximity to carpool down in the Tundra. I bet Jim could be convinced to provide "trip down Guinea food" for one more. The truck discussion alone is worth the price of admission.
The meat processors at Wilderness are really quite good. You may want to consider having them do the surgery. Probably won't be covered by Obamacare, but then, what is?
Just trying to do some creative thinking so that you can make Hog Hunt 2014.

Not a problem to have some more Eyetalian Specialty goodies As for the discussion, best check the ID's of any flies in the truck as we don't want them rattin' us out
I'm reminded of the last person who tried to pull a fast one on me at hunting camp. He wound up tied face down to his bed with a bunghole full of O.C spray

I think this "disciplinary barracks" thing is getting out of hand
Wait, the Poobah stays at the Officers Quarters, does he not?
got your pig killing tool for this year....the Gurkhas use it to take out sentries, sneak up behind the guy and split his skull in two.....i think you can do that to a pig
Might be fun to go out one morning and meet the driver at Wilderness carrying just a massive blade like that. Or a katana, tomahawk, claymore, spear, battleaxe, etc. Just to see the look on his face.
If my Shiloh isn't done by then, I'm thinking...
or
(not the cats though, they would scare the Poobah)
You'll be missing out if you don't bring that M1 Carbine with you. A fifteen round mag of Federal Soft points is nothing to sneeze at. You can put on the super sneaky stalk and close the distance, I have faith in you.
ya, the M1 (which I actually haven't shot yet ) could come along. Maybe the .300 Blackout too. Several folks enjoyed shooting it at Quemado.
As far as being super sneaky, I think the pigs tend to be preoccupied with big dangerous looking dudes, or maybe lean hungry looking dudes, so they don't pay attention to short engineers...
I just made a trade for a pre war 1894 in 32 Special with tang peep sight. That one might be a fun one to bring and shoot a pig with. Perhaps as the light rifle to my Model 71 in 348WCF. If I make the trip (fairly likely) this will be my lever action trip and hunt.
Maybe I can sell Pugs another gun this year. Hey Pugs! You want a 1930's 32 Special with tang peep or a Model 71 Deluxe (also peep sighted) 348? We have to keep the tradition alive and well! I have a truckload of ammo for both....
I don't know if I want all the hassle of flying with a firearm. Anybody got a gun I can use?
I will be flying with firearms anyway, not that hard to pack another in my aluminum travel case. I was going to bring lever actions in 32 Special and 348WCF anyway, and you could sure use one or both of those with us trading off after one pig each or I would pack my 340 Tyranosaur or 416 Rigby. The Rigby is GORGEOUS, and I used it last year on one pig.
Here is the Rigby, it was the rifle I wrote about in African Hunter Magazine a few years ago, article entitled "how to make a CZ 550 into a World Class Dangerous Game Rifle" Upgrades include stock by Karnis including 'hidden and reccesed sling studs', Ed Lapour tuned action with his three position model 70 style safety, NECG singe stage trigger, Fully glass bedded, bolt handle re shaped, Weisner drop box 6 round capacity bottom metal (Not that our great POOBAH would ever miss and need all those rounds) and other upgrades that I am probably forgetting.
I would be absolutely honored if you used it, sir.
I have some 350gr TTSX loads for it that are not so bad on recoil and very effective on pigs and larger.
The 340 is more plain looking, but is a Magnum Mauser with a great aftermarket trigger. It is essentially a 340 WBY with a shorter more standard neck and shoulder to hold a little more powder. I loaned it to a friend from church this fall and he took a nice Bull Elk with it, liquifiying the heart in the process.
By then I SHOULD have (It is in the import paperwork logjam coming from oversea's) a BRNO model 21 in 30/06 and that one would be available for your use as well. I am hoping to get it here in time for an Ed LAPour safty to be installed on it as BRNO's come from momma with bass-ackwards safety's.
if i go i aint hunting.....if no one else is using it ill pack it to help back who ever im hiking with up but that will be the extent of my hunting.....only way im going to be able to swing the trip is if i dont hunt and until i get the bills for my wifes surgery last week and see what our share is the trip itself is sorta in limbo....
whats likely gonna help me out is the fact ive been picking up shifts at the bar here and there.....REALLY dont want to bartend but will likely make the difference between my going and not.....its already contributed $150 to the fund in the last 10 days
If I get to come, and you want to hunt it, I will bring it for you. What is your height and weight, though? I generally do not let people shoot it who weigh less than about 180lbs. It can, and has, hurt people.
hmmm...it's without a scope at the moment. I was thinking of buying the NECG peep sight for it. Or yank the VX3 1.5-5x20 off the .45-70, and mount it...
I am pretty sure that a .416 350gr TTSX running 2750fps won't bounce off of a pig..... Gunner has a pretty awesome 500 if you don't feel that my Rigby is quite enough horsepower.

Are you bringing your monster guns again? I think I was out fishing with my wife when you brought these out, but I would live to give them a go if you bring them and I get to come this year.
Interstingly enough, I find my 348WCF to be more uncomfortable to shoot than my 416 Rigby. Must have something to do with the narrow lever action buttstock and the steel buttplate. At least there isn't a scope aboard to cut peoples eye sockets and nose bridges with.
To avoid another "Scope eye 416" experience (anyone heard from him since last year?) I will use the quick detactch feature on my scope if anyone else wants to shoot that whom I am unsure about their ability to handle the gun.
I loaned out my 340 Tyrannosaur (essentially a 338 Lapua by another name in a lighter weight rifle) to two people this fall, both shot game with it but paid for the shot with a double cut of the eye socket and nose, each. I might need to keep my soon arriving BRNO 30/06 as just a 30/06 so as to have a loaner that is adequate and not injurious to folks I loan it to.
Mark's Rigby is a pussy cat! If he brings it, one of you fellas oughtta smoke a pork with it.
Honestly, I can't think of a better set up for a full house 416. Great balance, handles perfectly, and those 350TTSX loads are actually surprisingly pleasant. Or maybe his rifle just fits me perfectly.
I do recall a lithe and attractive young lady that would of gone 130, soaking wet, enjoying it.

Sure thing Mark, I can bring 'em, I have a lighter weight lever rifle with the steel butt also, it's chambered for the 50-110 WCF, loaded full throttle, the 525 gr. Cast Performance slugs at 2200 fps SUCK , someone really needs to go with Lt. Pat and shoot our dining piggy with my 577 Nitro, oh George?
Thanks gunner! Lots of generous offers from a lot of you guys already! I really appreciate it. This decision is as close to being a judge on the Miss Universe pageant as I'll ever get!
I m not sure it would be a good idea to have a taser around. Somehow thoughts of erotic shock therapy fueled by cheap booze. Between you, Ingwe and ET pat is questionable on this too
But poobs. Think of the fun it would...for us to chase you around the yard drive stunning you. Im sure the pursuits will begin to fall in your favor as the alcohol sets in and people start running into trees
He is the MOST social GSD Ive ever seen, and thats what I wanted. George would have to run the dog, Im too old and fatI always decoy for him and attach the long lead to some 20 year old and say "Have Fun"!
I am hoping that my son Stephen will be able to make the hunt in March as it depends on his college school schedule. I too am working on my schedule and it just keeps on getting tougher and tougher to schedule things. I hope I can make. Regards to all, bgcatty
Hope that both of you can make it. I think that the 24HCF Boar Hunt can be a very good way for father and son to experience both a hunt and the friendships and responsibilities that go along with it. And the future of hunting, and what it entails, is entirely dependent on the next generation of hunters.

Hope yourself and Jr. can make it again BG, I really like watching you two shoot clay birds, a couple real shotgun aficionados at work there.
Ive got so many good offers for loaners, its starting to go to my head!
I may have to ponder my options, and look condescendingly at all things 270ish...
Dont mount anything on it until the Poobah has arrived at a decision.
No worries. NECG is selling both their Ruger peep sight, and also a 1/16" red fiber optic front. I have other #1's that could use it. Especially if I buy a .450 Nitro, I may be skeered to scope it.
Reminds me I need to figure out a different front sight for the 1920 Savage.
Been looking forward to this trip since march of last year Gunner. We will see what kind of trouble we can get into in the disciplinary barracks this year.
On the 6th of January 2014, those who have previously attended and wish to attend in 2014 should send a PM to Pugs to get his home address. The deposit check of $250 should be made out to Wilderness and sent to Pugs at his home. Reservations will be made on a first come, first served basis. Please put your 24HCF handle on your check
If we do not fill up, and I don't think we will, those who have not previously attended should PM Pugs on 13 January and get his home address and send the $250 deposit to him, made out to Wilderness, and place your 24HCF handle on your check.
Pugs will forward the checks to Wilderness and post the handles of those who have made their reservations.
And once we get the administrivia out of the way, we can spend time with some great guys(and gals), have a few drinks(won't define "few"), tell some almost true stories, shoot some hogs, and have too much fun.
And many thanks to Pugs for taking care of the reservations.
Thanks for the compliment to all the guys you mentioned. They really do high quality work with a great attitude. But they will tell you that it is all worth it.
I should have mentioned that relatives of prior hunters get the same preference as the hunters. We are trying to encourage the same or new generations to enjoy and respect hunting.
Just seeing if I can change the sticky thread myself. If folks reply to this one it may stick. In the meantime, here's the info from Steve.
2014 24HCF HOG HUNT RESERVATION PROCEDURES
Count me in for the 3/14 hog hunt. Unfortunately my son Stephen cannot make it this year as his spring break at Purdue was changed to the following week. Please add me to the list for the hog hunt and I look forward to seeing everyone again for the hunt.

doubt it, last i knew he gave it to JJHACK's son when we stopped over at his place before i headed back to Montana......dont think he could get it through the TSA anyway besides this year we are gonna give [bleep] a busted bottle and see how good he really is

Busted bottle is probably unrealistic. Now a Swiss Army knife, that would be a fair test...
Matter of fact, I am in the middle of booking a loser leave the campfire match between Bobby the [bleep] and The living legend in his own mind, The Real Hawkeye.
I'm ironing out the details between a cage match and a lumberjack match. Leaning toward a lumberjack match, just so I can stand outside the ring and throw Hawk back in everytime Rockchucker throws him out.
Did you guys know that Bobbys first knife kill of a hog was in a cave. He crawled in, stuck that hog right in the heart. The man fears nothing. Of course look who his Dad is.
Any 'Assault Weapon" is dangerous, and will jump up, of its own volition, and beginning killing people. These weapons are usually black and have a detachable high capacity magazine full of armor piercing and/or 'cop killer' bullets, which they spray indiscriminately .

Allen...just go ahead and give me your bank information and I'll wire the money to you.
For security purposes, you might want to give me your SSN and a credit card number for one of your no-limit cards. I'll call you when I'm done with the tranactions...collect.
With CT gaining such a lofty position, it will surely elevate him above the rank of 'disciplinary barrack resident.' , so long friend, see ya at the big house.

Thanks tex. There is light at the end of the tunnel. My last boss sent me word that the company won a bid on a new contract and as soon as the Government releases the funds, I'll have a job. The only problem is that the funds can take a few months.
It was a Model 70. A new Super Grade Lightweight at Cabelas. Primo wood, lovely polishing, lovely blueing, spendy price, and a God-awful Cabelas logo machined on the floorplate.
Several deer were out feeding when these two birds walk up. To my surprise they all start feeding together, which I've not seen before - in the past I've seen turkeys run off deer, especially young deer and does. The birds are feeding about five feet from a fawn. They turn their backs to it, and the youngster gets curious, walks over and sniffs a turkey, startling it. Both birds about jump out of their skins and run off. After the deer leave about an hour later the birds come back, and I poke one through the wing butts.
Back at camp, I'm starting to clean the bird, when I hear a nearby turkey. I'm looking around seeing nothing, and it stops. A couple minutes later it starts again, very close. It's above me - I look up, and see a mockingbird playing turkey
By 6 January, those who have previously been at a 24HCF Hog Hunt, and their relatives, should PM Pugs and get his home address, and then send the $250 down payment to him. Checks should be made out to Wilderness Hunting Lodge.
On 13 January, those who have not previously attended the Hog Hunt should PM Pugs, get his home address, and send him the $250 down payment made out to Wilderness Hunting Lodge.
First preference is being given to those who have been with us previously, and their relatives. We want to encourage relatives, especially a younger generation, to join our hunt. The future of hunting depends on them.
im not gonna be able to make it.....we are having such a hard time finding help that im limited to how much i can disappear and already promised someone ild split a hunt with them in April thats gonna have me gone for 10 days....
just wait old fart. I got your oxygen bottle already loaded
==========
Oh Schit. Do I have to rent a car that has an oxygen tank adapter?
By the way, to make it easier for Pat or Dan, I'll just grab steaks for the first night instead of assorted gourmet burgers to ease the time Pat spends at the grill.
I just wrote the last part to insure Dan and Pat are there. I'll serve up what ever the majority prefers.
Do all expect to be there by chow-time the first night? 630ish?
Whenever I try to clean up my diet, the first thing that happens is, I get meaner than Sheet. I can understand why they would think it is a kidney stone.

It is, but in an effort to make it look like we really made an effort, we did quite a bit of walking all over that hill with the big tall fence around it.
Oh, so the 'death march' is an option to make it look like real hunting?
I might just possibly pretend to be on one of those wooden stands, wearing lederhosen and waiting for boars to run past as I yodellike an Austrian dood.
just remember if you arent bringing Rommel George, NHK9, makes a pretty good sight hound.....least thats how we used him phugger sure can run over rocky terrain....

Do you have to use an "E-collar" on George to keep him from chasing house cats?
i know.....i was there last year and want to go even if it was the exact same group.....unfortunately everyone seems to want to do stuff in a 6 week period and with the lack of help i dare leave only once or risk the vengeance of my wife and was asked to spend a week hunting down in Texas by another member and said yes to that first....if we coul get up to a full staff it wouldnt be that big of a deal.....
Hadta run out to the Post Office for stamps this morning.
What, you were able to make it to the post office? From the way everyone was swamping Kroger and Wal-Mart, and the preemptive school cancellations, for the last 2 days I figured we were snowed in for a least a few days.

They actually do have at least one wooden stand there, and one or two pigs that run.
Here's the list with folks that have contacted me. The only checks I have in hand yet are 7x57Steve's and Ingwe's. I just used Ingwe's for a down payment on a .270.
I'm fixin to have to skootch up close to Mrs. Tide tonight. Every winter I start freezing to death and wondering why I don't live dead ass between Pat Powell and STXhunter. I'm tired of freezing to death.
There wuz a rumor that somebody with a small squirtgun full of 90% isopropyl would squirt the drug dealers who hung out on the corner in sub-zero to sell crack. Instant frostbite

I am between STXhunter and Pat Powell. It's supposed to be 18 tonight Hope my orange tree survives...
...and into every life some rain must fall.... Look at it this way Brudder, yer first idea is what the cold weather is best at..getting a female to WANT to snuggle up close
Well best of luck with the cold. Going to be 64F here on Thursday, so old Kentucky will warm up soon after that. And just think about all of them dead bugs outside. You will not have to feel them next spring the longer it stays cold.

It looks like we are getting close (28) to a full house of participants. That is okay (it is nice to see familiar faces and friends once again) but at the same time, I had hoped to see new folks joining our merry group as well.
Maximum number of participants and lodging: 31 in the cabins, all in bottom bunks. 3 couples in the house.close to a full house.

Nowhere in my contract does it say that I have to suffer hypothermia.
The sun has been shining bright on my old Kentucky Home, but it hasn't been shining warm. We made it up to a balmy +5 today.
Allen...my plus 1 is solely contingent upon 24H folks wanting to join in. If we get enough new guys wanting to give it a go, my extra spot will certainly be available.
I am interested in this hunt and have a few questions about it. Does the $695 fee allow for more than one hog or is there an option to pay for a second?
I've only shot one hog,a sow,but I've always heard that mature boars are not very good eating...is this correct?
Lastly,is there a place for doing your own skinning and butchering with use of a freezer? A place to plug in my meat grinder?
The timing of this hunt, for me,is great as it happens on my 58th birthday and it sounds like a good experience with great people.
Yes you can pay to shoot another hog,ram or whatever your pockets can afford. If you shoot a mature boar get it all ground in sausage and their processing fee is only like $100 so why wouldn't you want them to do it for you. The food you eat here is well worth the $695.
Here at home I can have a deer processed for $70-$80 but I do them myself,it's part of the hunt. So,is there a place for a do-it-yourselfer to process game?
They have a very well equipped and on-site butcher shop but you would have to give then a call to see if you could use it. Might be an insurance thing to consider.
They do a good job of it and the sausage they make is good.
That kind of math gets democrats elected. 34 registered voters and the democrat gets 40 votes....
But this is far more important than politics. We're talking about sausage here.
I've been training twice daily for the arduous hike to the top of mt. Cochon. (Which by the way is a Brazilian word for heart disease.)
I've been spending hours upon hours in dry fire and live fire practice so that I'll be able to take advantage if I am blessed to have a fleeting glimpse of Porky.
Success is the fruit of dedicated preparation. Or luck, whichever.
The only way that works is if you buy me a ticket too. I have the kind of luck that assures mine will NOT be the winner.it always goes to the other guy...

What types of sausage do they make there? Is it a patty type breakfast sausage or is it stuffed into links? Any andouille or boudin? The reason I'm asking is we don't eat much patty breakfast sausage in a years time...maybe 2 or 3 pounds. If you go the $50 skin and quarter route,is it frozen for the trip home? Dry ice available?I'm thinking about stopping at Reelfoot Lake to crappie fish for 3 or 4 days and would have access to a freezer there...from there it's only 7 hours to home.
Thank you for taking the time to answer my many questions

It'll be frozen for your trip home. I can't advise on dry ice, but I don't remember seeing any.
Reference the sausage, it is put into 2 pound bags or so. You can also elect to have it ground without spices, and that is good as well, for some chili and spaghetti recipes.
This could be something we did last year which you would prefer not to do again.
Or something we did not do which you would like to see us do.
One thing that occurred to me was to get pictures of 3-5 of the guys, with their weapons, and have them posted at the Fire. The group pictures we have taken in the past make it somewhat difficult to recognize everybody. And I think it would be interesting to see the rifles, pistols, knives, bows, spears, blackjacks, etc that were used to kill a hog.
We could get a volunteer to take the pictures and post them with the handles of the hunters.

Great idea. If we get pictures of smaller groups and (put names with them) it will help me figure out who the guy that keeps calling me "pal" is.
I'm really looking forward to meeting some 24hr folks! A good hog killin should be a fine way to welcome the first bit of spring in to the south central US. If anyone is in need of a stopover in the central KY area please send PM.
Were not talking about Bob coming out in a set of thigh high stockings and a garter belt are we? I don't want to scar the kid, he'll likely be picking which old folks home I go into, should things last that long.
Absolutely, I've already taught him to tell the hostess that it is his birthday, so he gets "special" treatment.
A long time ago, in a Canadian Province far, far away, my pard took me to one of those 'clubs' for my birthday. Treatment was 'special'I only wish I could remember it.

I have fond memories of the Windsor Ballet, myself...
Who knows what mischief(or worse) lurks in their hearts?
Come the first week of March, we'll find out.
I'm delighted that at least two of the newbies are the sons of guys who were there before. The future of guns and hunting resides in the next generation, as it always has.
If some of you guys are contemplating purchasing weapons chambered in these cartridges this will be an easy way to get to hunt, shoot 'em, and see what they can do.
oh and there was hope for a minute....were back up to full staff in the Wolf Point office.....for a week....ad sales gal called and quit this morning.....[bleep] hell 30 [bleep] percent local unemployment and i cant find someone to work.....and some idiots wonder why im so anti .gov handouts

Gunner
Gunner it was a real privilege shooting your .577 last year. I'm going to let someone else have that privilege this year
I'll second your generous offer though; I have a few unusual things folks can try if they like:
10mm Auto Kimber 1911 or S&W revolver Ruger Bisley .45 Colt (+P loads) .480 Ruger Super Redhawk .30-40 Krag #1 (heavy smokeless loads) .375 H&H Ruger #1 .45-70 Ruger #1 (heavy smokeless loads) Original High Wall .45-90 carbine (500gr black powder loads)
I figured you for a flipgun, Pat. By the by, I know it's early, but when you get a grip on the grocery list, you may want to post it. That way I can start raiding Costco a little at a time.
I had to look it up - the Model 14 is the "Attack" w. 7.5" blade. #15 is the Airman, and is a little smaller.
Model 14's were popular in Vietnam, as was the Model 1 & Model 2. A Vietnam era 14 is usually worth $1000+ and up.
There is also the "Model 12 with 14 grind", which is a 9" knife, with the same style grind to the blade. You almost never find them in tool steel though, which is a shame. They use Swedish O-1 tool steel, and they hold an edge well. I like knives with simple, clean lines, and the Randalls work for me.
I ordered a Model 25 Randall in June 2011. It's supposed to be ready in April 2016
Not the most practical and I don't use it for everything like I once did, but again its been with me for 42 years, bought it from Bo himself, and theres an attachment.
Sorry to say, but I'm out. I just learned that a contract job starts today, or tomorrow, that can't be ditched. I knew it was coming but had no idea when, until today.

I'm awful sorry to hear this. You gotta be thinking about retiring soon, Pat. It frees you up to do whatever you want. I was definitely looking forward to harmonizing again.

ahhh chit, sorry to hear that, Pat. I felt bad about my schedule being screwing up yours, but this is worse
I've never understood why my old outfit specifically made contract and off duty deals verboten, but they did, and it made walking away from them that much easier.
Ok, Pat quit in fear of Ingwe's thong so here's where we are.
I got a check from Ben C today from Carmel IN and I'm afraid I have deleted any PM that had his campfire handle on it so if Ben could drop me a PM with that I'd appreciate it. I'm only lacking a few checks and would like to ship the whole kit and kaboodle out of my hands to Wilderness by the end of Jan so whenever you're sitting down and paying your monthly bills think about this.
HOW TAME IS THE YAK! I've got a little history of dealing with some unhappy hooved critters and could bring a TQ gun as well iffun you want? No Questions ASKED!
ingwe you will like Becky......you may have to sneak one back for me was gonna have Pat bring an extra for me but no way in hell im gonna make it....ill just have to shoot him some money before hand....i aint a big whiskey drinker but she is one smooth gal....and i cant find her in Montana

Bought my first bottle of "becky" last week. Believe I will go pour 2 fingers and see what it taste like.
If you really do get down to TX this spring, it's made in San Antonio. I bought my 1.75 l bottle at Cosco liq store of all places.
I hate to say it, but they won't import it in Kentucky because it is so good. I'm guessing it is a blended whisky, but joking aside, it is a very good sipping whisky. I like it alot.
I wish it was that easy. It's not that we like to block the roads just have to get authority to proceed and if anyone else has the authority we can't get it till they release it.

This is my 1st post & I have to say I agree with you 100%. Shooting/hunting with my son resulted in a Marine Corps Marksman, police officer & SWAT team member. You just never know.
Those of us on the outside, definitely need to be enlightened as to the parameters of your Jackwad Governor's pet legislation. You never know when care packages or birthday gifts might need to be sent.
Yup convertable and I have plenty of supplies for and ammo for the .45 acp just not .45 colt I searching around now for brass dies and bullets What powder are you guys loading with?
I was thinking this holster is snazzy!Makes me feel all Teas like!
Dan, I have near a hundred rounds loaded up with the 270 gr Penn bullets Thunderhead over 20 gr H-4227, it runs a comfortable 1000 fps and will shoot through any pig that's ever rooted dirt.
I'll bring 'em and make ya a helluva deal on em if you want.
I don't remember how I ended up with only a left hand holster out of a set of San Pedro Saddlery "Big Ed" holsters that I had back when I shot CAS, but I did.
Houston Pat, I need to ask a question? Are you going for sure to Tenn? If so, will you buy an extra large bottle of becky creek and give to Joel for him to hide and take home. I'll send a check to cover whatever you pay for the 1.75 l bottle.
yes, I am going, and your money is no good in Houston, so I'll take care of it I was gonna make another stop at Spec's anyway.
I'm hung up in a meeting on the 4th, and won't be able to leave until evening, so I'll probably roll into Wilderness sometime in the evening of the 5th.

good, I really didn't want to bunk with the yak
I've got 4 fifths of Becky. Haven't found a handle of one yet, but I'll see what I can do...
Just ordered pistol yesterday from IL at my dealer already and I'm on my way to have it added to my permit and then back to dealer to pick it up 24 hours from purchase to my hand is amazing!
I'll not rush time anymore but I do look forward to seeing 24hr folk...and turkey season! ...but there's yote's and crappie to chase in Feb...and bores that have suffered cold and presses that have set unused since deer season started. Plenty of life to live between now and then!
A great advantage of hunting from the kitchen window is that it is close to the refrigerator that holds beer and left over barbequed hog. And you can wear a T-shirt and your shorts.

Just sayin'!
Steve
Are you sayin' that a guy with Yorkies duzn't have the ju-ju to go out in da cold and hunt??
We need to put a large containment fence around the barracks. Too much riff-raff is finding it's way over to where the high-society congregate.
The barracks are where the real fun is, though. I always love climbing over a 1000 beer cans and liquor bottles to tell the party boys dinner was ready.
Hunting(shooting) from the upper deck at the big house is doable Joel I ordered the Galco SAO...figured it be more functional than the fancy western holster...Deb has a bedazzeler so I can nig it up with jewels
Dan et al: I'll be making the butcher order soon for my traditional first night's meal and I'll pick up the brisket needed while I'm at it,as well.
How many pounds and what cuts do you prefer I order? I remember this as a funny topic of conversation last year and I want to make sure I don't screw it up. When I told the butcher what Pat told me to ask for last year, he knew right away Pat was from Texas.
I'll touch base with you on that Bob, if Bill (R1150R) is driving again and will be kind enough to tote my cooler and some goods I'll pick up the brisket here as I can get a whole packer for way cheaper than what that butcher charges you
Bob, the airlines keep 'adjusting' my schedule, but not by much. When it is written in stone, I'll go ahead and forward it to you. Let me know what I need to throw in on this butcher shop deal.
Alrighty folks. 2 more checks to go and i'll be shipping things off to Wilderness. No reason we can't get more aboard but you will make it a pain if you come in late for me and if you do that I'm going to have Crimson Tide and Gunner have "discussion" with you.
If you don't show up you aren't worthy of sniffing the Poobah's thong! Wait, um, I'll come up with something better. You'll miss out on the .270 door prize. Wait, no one wants that. Crap. OK, if you don't show you'll be mocked endlessly. Well, if you show up you may be mocked too. This is hard.
I was secretly plotting to show up in a red sports car. They have Miatas on sale locally...well, at least as much as a Mazda dealer knows how to put stuff on sale. But they all had automatic trannies transmissions and a Miata is ummm...too popular down here, anyway...
So I looked at a older Porsche 911, which actually are fairly interesting cars to drive. But there is one place long guns and a cooler can fit in a 911, and that's the passenger seat. And they won't all fit at the same time. Nyet. Corvettes were a little better, but...:/
SWEET! A couple of us can get in the back seat, and four more in the back, guns protruding, and do a " Rolling Thunder" drive-by on those pigs!
Somebody has a pic of me and George I think, riding in the back of a Pickup and sitting on the tool box. I had Gunner's 500NE in my little claws, spoiling for a target of opportunity....

So I looked at a older Porsche 911, which actually are fairly interesting cars to drive. But there is one place long guns and a cooler can fit in a 911, and that's the passenger seat. And they won't all fit at the same time. Nyet. Corvettes were a little better, but...:/
anyhow, I bought this last night:
Kick ass Patrick, congrats on the new ride.
"THOU SHALT ORDAINE IN TENNESSEE PIG BLOOD WHEN THE IDES OF MARCH IS NEAR"
I confess growing up we had a yorkie named Winston .... It was my mom's dog She always wanted a small dog and after having a German Shepard named Tiger She said no more big dogs....I never much cared for small dogs as well as bigger ones....when I moved out on my own at 17 I got a Blue Tick Coon Hound named Duke, then a half Shepard half Doberman named bear,a Pit Bull name Mookie( he had a hatred for black people almost killed one so he had to go) and 2 English Setters ,Petey and Champ Labs are far and away the best dog in my experience!
Mother and family always had weiner dogs. I had a Brittany, then went onto Border collieX Aussie and Border Collies, throw in a GSD mix and for the last 15 years Ive been a herding dog kinda guy. The BCs and Aussies are great for anything, and I work with a lot of GSDs and Mals. I love having a big dog around, as long as they actually do something for their alpo. Labs are a great all purpose dog if you select carefully.
I can vouch for laying prone off the front porch barfing isn't too shabby, really. But this year, am thinking perhaps beating feet up the little ridge above and pitching a tent crickside.
Note to self: check prevailing winds, ridge relative to slave quarters.
I won't call any names, but I actually saw a member put a cot in the back of his pickup truck last year and sleep out there. Damn coyotes almost got him....
I'm in no way trying to rub anything in, but it was about 50 degrees and sunshine here today. The wind is blowing, but I still took the opportunity to fire up the grill and make some chicken wings.
Ingwe,
Pabst puts their award winning brew in bottles, but my discerning palate finds that the real home of PBR should always be in cans...
Dan...It looks like I'll be arriving around 9 or 10am regardless. For some reason, flights are only departing here early am or too late in the afternoon/evening for it to be worth the take-away from our evening fun. Plus, as you know, I'm having lunch with Miranda Lambert at 1ish and who knows how long that will last.
You just let me know when you're touching down and I'll be there.
Thanks for your kind comment in the granddaughter thread.
We'll wait for Tom's final and begin to coordinate our plans. Maybe your early flight, if it happens and requires a stop, puts you on my flight to Nashville.
We'll have to end the evening at the cigar joint you took me to last year.
Shivs gotta go in checked baggage and every stop I make ( and there will be a few) is another $25 for the checked bag
bastidsdon't want me carrying my boner on a plane.
In light of that, I'll bring extra. You won't likely need one, but I hate to go outside without some type of cutting tool in my pockets or on my person.
If you want a personal shiv at the hunt, pop one of yours in the mail and send it to me via post office. I'll drive it down. PM me if you want my address.
somehow, the monkeys seem to be having a good time riding the pigs, rather than actually doing anything constructive. Or maybe they think the pigs can help them escape the hunters?
OK myself and Bob booked our flights this morning arriving in Nashville Late afternoon on Tuesday if anyone is coming through Nashville Tuesday hook up with us for dinner and cocktails
I really like the way that holster covers so much of the pistol. Lots of protection for the iron and it is comfortable on a belt, regardless of strong side hip or crossdraw.
Glad you like it.
I'll have mine with me when I pull in to the hog hunt.
I hope so Hogdon truck is a 100 miles out from my dealer but we are getting hammered with a snow storm...hoping some Hs 6 and H 110 is on the truck But just in case I have him holding 8lbs of IMR4227 which may be better any ways
Those 270 gr Thungerheads are loaded with 4227, good stuff Dan, I took the old Hank Williams Jr. load and substituted a 255 gr bullet and added the 270 gr instead, the Rugers will handle that with ease, the pigs, not so much.
I just found out 1st thing I have to do is have cylinder reamed damn thing is tight .445. bullet won't even fit thru WTF Iguess I'll get them reamed to .4525
Understand. Next time I'm at one particular LGS I'll see what they have on hand. Most of what I see are gas check type cast. I'll get you some and send, if legal in your state.
I guess I'll call a local guy here tomorrow he specializes in pistols Sucks to buy a brand new pistol and have to pay to have chambers reamed, don't mind spending $ if it for something to customize it like grips or a sight but damn how hard can it be to drill the right size holes!

I don't know if I would ream out 451 throats. My decision was easier because a 451 speer wouldn't even come close. If it takes a lot of pressure for the 451 speer and the 452 cast is a no go, then I think I would. You're right about how hard is it to have the correct size throats. From what I hear it isn't just ruger either
That'll be a heck of a pig killer, and from what I read those BFR's are some fine shooting revolvers, there will be no bouncing off bullets with that model!!!!!.
Took my pistol to the smith this morning he's opening up both the 45 colt and 45 acp cylinders to .4525 and recutting and squaring the force cone to 11 degrees for $150
TiteGroup and the RCBS 270 CAST Bullet, CCI 300 Primers is all you would need for hog hunting . Gunner i would use the Hornet with your load on deer in a heartbeat.
We are less than a month away now! Plans are coming together in a week or two I'll post a supply list as we did last year and you can pick some items to bring I'm working on a menu
Picked up 1000 Win large pistol and 1000 Fed large mag pistol primers today I'm stocked nicely on almost everything now
Here's the list. The checks went off today via certified mail to Wilderness. Doesn't have to be final but if someone else decides they want to go please use the same rules of engagement and contact me and I can ensure the money gets there.
My dad is thinking about paying both of our ways on this trip if there is room. IF there is space available for us, and If he can and does, and I bring that 416 Rigby again, (I know, several if's there) would you actually hunt with it and try to use it on a piggie?
If you just pull the gun to your shoulder and fire without crawling up on the stock, it won't bite you, and we could take the scope off and let you use the express sights. They do hit to point of aim.
I would drop down a notch and 'slum' with my puny little 340 Tyrannosaur I just hope that a 225gr TTSX started at 3100fps doesn't bounce off..... If it does I might have to follow up with my cold steel Assegai spear

Not going to make it this year with tjm10025 and bgcatty. Spring break got moved for the first time in 10 years. Hope y'all have fun and a good time. To the yak riders, godspeed.
so close, yet so far.......was real close to being able to swing it again, my daughter came back and took the ad position......going to be hiring a real experianced person for another position and he will be here in a couple weeks.....then i got the estimate to fix our roof due to the wind storm we had a few weeks ago.....so much for being able to buy a plane ticket guess im just not meant to go this year.....

Thousand Pardons!!! I inadvertently used the WRONG term when I mentioned our EVIL Nefarious plot. I didn't mean "innocent" I meant "UNSUSPECTING"!! Now yez can all get back to feelin' nervous as Hell!
OK here it is this years official 2014 Hog Hunt tee shirt Order from this link below we need to sell 26 to get them printed and it has to be by Sunday Feb 16 so we can get them in time(I hope last year was an adventure but the owner went above and beyond to get them to us) Cost is $14.95 +shipping to your door I picked a new color as some didn't like the orange(Bob said it made him look fat)
I emailed a buddy to see if he is interested. If so, we're in. It's only a 4 hour drive from Memphis and my buddy has an awesome RV so it could be a great road trip!
OK Tony...I'm flying in and Allen or Steve are taking down my rifle for me. We are picking up Tom (Ingwe)at the airport around 230 on Wednesday and then we'll head into camp.
Time to go shovel some snow. If I'm dead before I fall face first into a pile, please give Dan my deposit to help him out with his Botox and Lipo treatments.
Got the Bisley back today cylinder throats opened to.4525 (they where.449) and forcing cone recut to 11 degrees and chamfered to 82 degrees I got some new custom rosewood grips too

Allen...how are we looking on a head count after Tony's deposit?
2 1/2 weeks to go. Steve and Allen did their usual stellar job of getting it all put together. Now it's our turn Danny boy. Best put up our to-get/bring list inside the next few days so you and I can fill the gaps with a grocery stop along the way.
Appetizers, gourmet burgers and sides are on the menu for Wednesday night.
29 with Tony. I've verified that Wilderness got the first batch of checks February 13, 2014 , 12:05 pm via Certified mail.
I'm sure Tony's check will be along shortly/ The USPS has been kind of random here as of late as ours is an old neighborhood with lots of stairs and snow.
Will do Bob just finalizing the menu and I will have the list up this week I'm assuming you guys want the smashed potatoes again and maybe the Mac salad?

Gents...for those trying to plan their gear, the average temps for our 4 days are lows in the 30's with highs in the bottom low 50's. Of course, you should expect rain and maybe some gusting winds during our stay.
Some light thermals under rain gear should do the trick. Otherwise, light layering under a jacket will keep you comfortable. Their record highs for this time frame have been in the 70's.
You do not need camo. You do need to wear orange. As a precaution, you might consider planning your footwear as though there may be some days where you'll be hiking on sloppy, wet muddy ground. Two pairs of hiking/hunting boots may be best if your footwear isn't waterproof.
All just FYI for your consideration, gents. I hate packing for hunts when I don't even unpack 2/3rd's of the gear I have brought along with me.
Ok Steve and Allen do a great job getting this together for us and part of the cost savings is that we prepare our own meals at night. Here is the menu and list of things we need. Let me know what you can help with and I'll mark your name beside the items. If I over looked anything please let me know. A special thanks to Bob for all he contibutes behind the scenes!

I'll bring #17, the olive oil in a 3 quart container, and other stuff if needed.
Also, Wilderness is donating two hogs for our eating pleasure again this year.
And is there any particular weight hog you would like for the barbeque?
And a news note: Wilderness swears that they now have a roof over the fire pit so while we are busy getting wet on the inside, we won't get wet on the outside.
I'll shoot, literally and figuratively, for 150 pounders. The first one should be ready for the smoker on Wednesday or it can stay in the cooler until Thursday.
And I plan to take head shots so that no meat is ruined.
It's 35 Remington I bought from John Barsness. I put a recoil pad on it to increase LOP, and added a Leupold 4X.
It consistently shoots 3 shot 1 inch groups with Remington 200 grain Core-Lokt factory loads. It's a sweetie to shoot and has very little recoil.
I remember the day I shot the hog in the picture. It was in December, pretty cold, and raining. As I recall, that was the hunt where Pat tried to push me into a roaring camp fire, in a pretty heavy rain, that would only keep the side facing the fire warm. And to top it all of, he drank most of my brandy.

I hope that little Geico pig is running around the Wilderness Lodge property.

I'll always have a soft spot for the 35 remington. Oh, and Pat is a dirty rosencrantz for failing to make this hog hunt.
Pat will be there in spirit,I know he wanted to make it but just can't this year
Yes I will. I just commented to my wife how sorry I was not to make it, and I am looking forward to the report. Is Bobby gonna bite one on the neck this year? (Don't tell 'em how that one happened to die on the road Dan.)

I guess I'll have to drag my Alvarez down there, beat out two chords and sing: "Bob is gay".

Hi Guys, Checking in and catching up on the thread from FL. I get back home late on the 24th.
Hey Dan, Put me down for # 16.
Hey Bobby, An encore of The Gooey-Butter Cake sounds terrific!
Unfortunately, I can't find any 50/70 ammo so it looks like the Sharps has to stay home. I was hoping to plug a pig with it and have enough ammo to let anyone interested try it.
Looking forward (with trepidation) to seeing all y'all.
Just tried to order a t-shirt but the link is closed. Are they making any extras?
So I am in Korea for 2 1/2 months, head home to dear wife in Oz for a couple of weeks with one to be spent hunting in the State's. Do you really know what that would cost me? I would be left working until I am 60... Give me 2 years and I will be retired, home and able to whatever the helll I want.
So you would have chosen a Nuc Holocaust event over this? You do have some screwed up priorities....
Really sorry your son couldn't make it Joel. Bring him down for a turkey hunt/visit in 'bama to make it up to him...the corruption would be on a much more minor scale... This is an invitation.
bummer for us, too, there may be more thongs, kilts, and speedos present with no minors around.
My nephew Jake, who turned 15 on groundhog day, will be there with my brother Greg. Jake is all hot to kill a pig with his Grandfather's M94 .30-30. He got his first two deer last year so time to expand his skills.
No fear.....CT, Mac, 'chucker, J and I (maybe even the Doc) will death march him so he thinks he worked for it. Probably be better if he gets away from you cultured folk for a bit
Anyone know what the terms/conditions are for a second hawg?
The old Marlin 38-55 is ready to rock for the first one. But there are a couple of other old-timers in the safe that are screaming "take me...take me" and would love to escape for a few days.

He'll have to get started early and walk past dark to walk George in the ground. Now, in the interest of fairness, He'll put me in the ground in about ten minutes...
Yes Sir! Sauce is always better after it's cooked and gets cold then reheated We will be having baked Rigatoni with meat, ricotta ,Mozzarella and Parmesan cheese. I'm able to premake it and freeze so I just have to reheat when we have it for dinner, that will be served along with the roasted sausage peppers and onions Mangia Bene!
I'm gonna miss "dad" keeping us all honest and drinking. Why do I see a certain elder statesman dig trainer kinda filling in.......
If you are referring to me, I am barely past middle age ( if you are going to live to 120) and I would serve well in a supervisory capacity, especially as it pertains to drinking, because of late I've been a teetotaler.
Looking forward to getting away for a few days. I doubt there will be any laughs, and I'll be thirsty the entire time, but it is good to see everyone again. Well, most everyone.

I forgot to bum an ice cold PBR last year CT, ya gonna have an extra this year?

You can bet on it my friend.
10-4 Brudda, the pigs are gittin skeered,.............they know.............
Receipt back from Wilderness in the mail today acknowledging $8,800 in deposits and full payments. Hi countries went in afterward so don't know if he'll get the receipt or it will show up here but we're all set and getting closer.
VERY glad to see someone is bringing PBR. Those full cans make such a nice explosion when hit.
Hi everyone! Im really looking forward to the hunt. Unfortunately my son Stephen can't make it this year - Purdue changed his spring break. Just want to remind all that TJM10025 and I will be bringing a couple of boxes of clay birds for the trap machine and shotguns and ammo. Like last year we encourage all to bring a shotgun and ammo and a box of birds so we can all partake in a little "shotgun competition". Safe travels to everyone! bgcatty
Stephen is a fine young man, and I hope he can join us a again.
slight change of plans for me - taking a Model 99G Savage instead of the M1920. The lever gun was made in 1927, and seems to shoot well despite being a takedown. Shot it today with some factory loads and it was no trouble to keep three in an inch at 50 yards. I'll work up some mild loads for it before I go.
Eclectic range day for me, shot the 99, and then some loads for the .300 Blackout AR - 220 grain Outlaw State bullets, which are supposedly designed to expand at subsonic loads. They also shot pretty well.
Shot pistols, too. Shot lousy. think pistols will be for backup & plinking only

OK, question for you big guys like CT or Gunner. Im traveling light and only taking a carry on. If you have any spare rain gear, can I borrow it? I don't plan on going out in the rain at all..but I AM followed by a black cloud...
for you guys going through Nashville I highly recommend McNamara's Pub.authentic Irish food whiskey in live music to your hearts content.the staff there is fresh off the boat from Ireland itself with thick accents.
the whiskey list is quite impressive. It was good place to get a little rowdy.

Yep, turn left at the bank in Monterrey, then out in the country turn right as the beer/ice/lotto gas station, then when a dog attacks your car, turn right...

We'll figure something out. Hell if it rains, I'll let you have my jacket. My delicate sensibilities won't allow me to go slay creatures in the rain.

You boys crack yourselves up sometimes, don't you?
Tom...Joel and gunner are the size of phone booths. They don't make thongs that big except at tent stores. You can't possibly be that big. If you are, let me know so I can get a mini-van,instead of a SUV.
Steve...congrats on drawing your Wyoming elk tag. Please do me a favor. The burgers will arrive with dry ice packaging sometime Wed. am. I'd appreciate it if the box could be opened and burgers laid out on the kitchen counter top so as to be completely thawed for Wed's dinner.
I'd do it but we're picking up Tom at the airport at 245 and may get to camp a bit too late to take care of it.
Yes I did Bob, I am premaking the Mac salad the day before we leave and will vacuum seal it and send it down with the briskest and the rest of the food so all we will have to do is grill the burgers Wed. Evening
Looks like it will be...I got spoiled with the weather 2 yrs ago being 80 degrees and wearing shorts the whole time
Last year was real nice. Just cool enough not to overheat on the death marches. Course, it's still winter here and anything above 30 feels like a heat wave.

Gotta a camo waterproof 'hoodie' , I'll throw it on the truck for ya.
If it's in the 40's I will be in shorts. This southern blood has gotten use to this -6 weather here in Yankee ville illinois. I better bring 8 cases of beer for the rainy days.
All I have to say is atleast I hit what I was shooting at free handed even thought the scope bounced off my face. But his eye relief is different than mine and I had to hold my face closer to soften then recoil so my shoulder didn't take it all. Hahaha

Hey gents...trying to get a expected ETA from the majority so we know what time to get dinner going. I'm thinking that most would be there by 7 or so with a few exceptions for those coming from the upper north east. We'll grill twice if we have to but I'm just trying to get an idea for planning purposes.
It will likely be later when I get there. No need to grill again for me. Getting to see everyone will be a treat even if it's with a cold burger and warm beer....

Bob they will eat when we say geez dinner will be served promptly at 7:17 pm By then they will be buzzed and it won't matter if the burgers are still half frozen or burnt For those that will arrive after 7:17 pm just let me now if you want half frozen or burnt I'll set some aside for you
Nice.........I'm gonna bring my 338-06 and a few other bad weather bashers to the pig kill, looks like we may need them, plus several loaners.
Gunner
ahem, well they aren't exactly pig rifles, but I can bring a .300 Roy and 7mm-08, which are both stainless & synthetic, and folks are welcome to use them. I was gonna bring the .300 Blackout, but could also bring a couple other AR's, a .308 and a 6.8 which are both weather resistant.
I expect to arrive early to mid-afternoon Wednesday.
Zima is a clear, lightly carbonated, alcoholic beverage, that is made and distributed by the Coors Brewing Company, ultimately MillerCoors. Introduced in 1993, it was marketed not as a beer, but as an alternative to beer, an early example of what is now often referred to as alcopop. Its domestic production ceased in October 2008, but it is still marketed in Japan.[1] History[edit]
Zima means "winter" in Slavic languages. TV writer Jane Espenson came up with the name.[2] It was launched nationally in the United States as Zima Clearmalt in 1993 after being test-marketed two years earlier in the cities of Nashville, Sacramento, and Syracuse. The lemon-lime drink was part of the "clear craze" of the 1990s that produced products such as Crystal Pepsi and Tab Clear.[3] The slogans used in early advertisements for Zima were "a truly unique alcohol beverage" and "Zomething different". Zima offered an alternative to the then-successful wine cooler category, and it became very popular. Coors spent $50 million marketing Zima in its first year, persuading nearly half of American alcohol drinkers to try it. Brandweek magazine reported that at Zima's peak in 1994, 1.2 million barrels of the beverage were sold. Originally popular among young women, Coors made its first attempt at attracting young men to the brand in 1995 by marketing Zima Gold, an amber-colored beverage that promised a "taste of bourbon"; the drink was unpopular and disappeared from store shelves within the year.[3] Zima was associated with rumors claiming that the beverage did not contain alcohol or that its alcohol content would not register on alcohol-breath-test equipment;[3] the myths were alleged to have improved the beverage's popularity among teenagers.[4] In describing "The Long, Slow, Torturous Death of Zima", writer Brendan Koerner cited Zima's perceived reputation as a "girly-man" beverage and its persistent parodization by late-night TV host David Letterman.[3] The Chicago Tribune quoted distributors ordered to stock "caffeinated alcoholic beverage Sparks on retail store shelves to make up for Zimas absence".
There are a million ways to slight a rival's manhood, but to suggest that he enjoys Zima is one of the worst. Zima was the original "malternative"a family of alcoholic beverages that eventually came to include such abominations as Smirnoff Ice and Bacardi Silverand it has long been considered the very opposite of macho: a drink that fragile coeds swill while giving each other pedicures.
All in all, it seems a manageable, fairly comfortable weather forecast for hunting. The evenings outside will be chilly but that's what bonfires and liquor are designed for. No wind to speak of is a nice advantage.
Safe travels to those driving. If anyone needs me and Dan to pick up anything last minute for you(Wed am until 4pm,) please feel free to call my cell at 703.200.1464 and I'll do my best to accommodate your request. We pass by a few liquor and grocery stores on our way to camp from Nashville.
See you in 5,boys!! =========

-If anyone wants to get a second hog, it will cost $200 for a 100-125 pounder.
-When you arrive, please check in at the main building which is just to the right of the pond. Wilderness has the list of names of all those who sent the down payment to Pugs. Your name must be on the list to check in. We want to make sure we do not get interlopers like we did last year.
-Wear blaze orange whenever you are in the woods. It is both a safety issue and is respectful of the other hunters.
-Please tip the guides if you use one. My experience with them is that they are great guys and very knowledgeable. They are also a big help in getting the hogs out of the woods.
-All of the evening meals will be served at the fire pit that now has a roof. The food is being brought by us and prepared by Dan and company. Two hogs are supplied by Wilderness and will be cooked on the smoker. Sinfully good!
-Beer, bourbon, brandy, cigars and other goodies are most welcome.
-Plan on having too much fun.
Please add anything else that you think would be helpful, especially for the newbies.
This will be the first time I've been on a trip of this kind. No license required, blaze orange required, Yaks and everything else make me want to get there as early enough to help you all unload and stay as late as possible.

Can't wait to put put some faces to your handles.
I'm sorry to miss this year and meeting you. I would use caution around Bob when suggesting putting a face to a handle.
I will need to borrow some orange when its my turn to go out. Need Xtra large man size. I don't plan on going out in the first wave, so hopefully somebody will be done with their orange after that.

I may bring a couple 1911's and Ruger #1's to sell.
Gunner
Oh really what flavors? PM me.
Besides the Walker, I'll probably bring the Sistema, the Sig 938, the 5" M629 (which is for sale), the 610, and the 480 Ruger - assuming I can get ammo loaded for all of them this weekend

In the past, we had group pictures. Problem was, not everyone was there for the picture, and even then, it was hard to see everyone clearly.
Can someone volunteer to take pictures of singles and/or two or three of the hunters along with handles and then post them here?
It would make the hunt more memorable(sometimes those of us at the hunt do not remember some of the things we participated in) and it would be fodder for those who could not make the hunt.
Please let me know if you can handle these chores, and thanks.

220 Swift and 300 H&H in the #1's, maybe we can work some trades.

Steve- I'm not volunteering to be the picture maker, but I'll try to take some photos.
Here's one from last year of ET, Gunner & sharpsguy. It's sort of fuzzy and blurry 'cause it was the morning after.
Note to newbies: Stay away from these individuals. When they start talking about "Shiloh", it ain't about April 1862. It's about making your Credit Card start to whimper and curl up in a fetal position. --Bob .
Anyway, don't know if anyone who is going has a decent AR trigger they are looking to trip.
My R15 trigger is hateful.....
Tony
I have a Timney 4 lb single stage, if you want to go that route. It's still new in the package. They're not cheap, but I'd probably sell it for 20% off Midway's price.

I dropped a timney single stage in my AR and its a great improvment.Easy install also
I'll have to make some Peach pie I'm out right now but I'll have some for you and some extra if anyone wants any. If anyone wants a pie PM me so I'll have enough.

If you want Cherry let me know. Looks like I might be very busy this week.
If you have an easton Synergy bat 28oz I'd be intrested
Good luck finding any first year Synergy bats. I had two and sold them for $500. I suggest find a good machinist and start shaving current models that's legal. Lol I would say all 1st gen Synergy's have been busted by now.
The original Miken Ultra was the bat that changed softball forever. I seen some bombs hit with those. JC Phelps hit one against us at the Smokey Mtn Classic that is still going.

my dad took one of the side of his head last spring in practice hit by a Miken ultra...very scary I don't know how he lived, side of his head swelled up like a melon
The original Demarini double wall bats had a titanium inner wall. I met Ray Demarini before he sold the company to Wilson, he died a couple yrs later from cancer. When I played for Sunbelt in 2000 we were sponsored by Demarini but the bats were not as good as the ones originally made by Ray. When we won the USSSA World Series using the prototype Synergys I watched Johnny McGraw hit a HR over the batters eye in center field at Disney where the Braves play during spring training. The wall is 400ft to center and the batters eye and scoreboard is 50ft above that.
The Miken was the first composite bat on the scene but it took a few yrs before they perfected it with the Ultra and man was that bat hot. Base hitters turned into HR hitters and limited HR tourneys was a pitchers nightmare.

My plan was, and hopefully still is, is to leave my house at 6:00 AM Tuesday, and arrive at Wilderness around mid-afternoon. Have done this every year and it worked out pretty well.
The snow forecast may mess up my plan. I just hope the hell I can get out of my neighborhood and onto the interstates.
Dan...the weather forecast is cautiously forecasting we may get 6-12 inches here beginning sometime late tonight and ending tomorrow afternoon.
Are you worried about getting out Tues?
======== I'm a little more worried about you. It's supposed to clear here on Monday afternoon. They should have the runway clear by 5pm Tuesday,if it happens the way they're forecasting. I'm hoping it's not heading your way such that it continues into Tuesday.
I've been so busy the only way I have known about this is clients calling to reschedule tomorrow's appointments and my wife asking if we need to cancel our traditional Sunday night dinner with all the kids and their families.
If I don't start in, or drive into, schitty weather it wouldn't feel like a 24hr gathering!
I'm hoping the death march goes as planned....,.I. "took one for the team" on the slopes today. Idiot boarder was gonna take out my pard's 6 yo daughter, so I opted to cut him off prior. Took the board across my right ankle/lower leg for my trouble.
I finished the day, but schit is tightening up/changing color now.
He'll do it if you tell him to. Last time I told him to do something, he said something to the effect of: "You ain't the boss of me!" and then he ran off.
No need to run Bobby. I've got a thunder stick you can use to reach out and touch the hogs with. I owe you a drag too after you hauled mine out of the woods last year. Bill
Possibility of "fog" in Nashville Wednesday. IIRC TN can get gnarly fog
I have not settled on the final route. May take the old truck, too, since it's wearing a set of All Terrain tires, that would be a little better in snow.
firearms-wise, I'm pretty set, sighted in 3 rifles today & loaded a bunch of ammo. Funny how the 99 Savage out-shot a couple of newer rifles, despite it being 87 years old
I've now had 2 flights cancelled on me, trying to get out of Ithaca. If they scrub this evening's flight, too, I'll rent a car and start the 10 hours back to Greater Cincy. Then I'll be able to grab the truck and start South toward Monterey. Of course, they could get me out of ITH, only to strand me at my Philly connection.
But, I shall continue to think happy thoughts!
And someone please PM me a list of provisions to bring.
Have about 2 inches here already but it's likely to stop by middle afternoon rather than the 6pm timeframe as earlier predicted. Flights tomorrow afternoon should be leaving as scheduled.
Bigger problem here is a sheet of ice is underneath the falling snow.
We dodged that bullet totally!! Must be all da virgins we sacrificed up here after the last one Courtesy of Gitem, I should be bringing some vhiskey. I am gonna hunt with my Sauer capegun and Crimson Tide has the use of my 44/90. Gunner and CT,I have yer care packages made up but for one last addition to both which I pick up tomorrow. George, a large antipasto will be ready.
Pat...Allen is going to let me use one of his as I didn't want to F around with the diaper headed TSA idjits at Dulles IAD. I think Allen's rifle he's bringing may be one of nice wood so, if it isn't any extra trouble for you, please bring a weather proofed rifle so I don't have to worry about the extra protection and perfect cleaning of one of his wood stocked rifles. One bullet, too.
Thanks to both Pat and Tony but Allen just contacted me and his extras are all weather, as well.
So, you don't need to take up extra space for my begging, sorry ass.
Thanks anyways, gents. Appreciated.
I've never hunted pigs in the snow. This could be fun.
Mark...Dan and I get to Nashville at around 6p. We'll have a SUV waiting for us and then head to the Hilton (Nashville Downtown).
Dinner reservations are at 830pm at a place called PUB 5. I'd be more than happy to buy you and your wife dinner if you want to join us. A celebration dinner for your new employment, so to speak.
There's one extra sleeping pull out bed in our room so your wife can stay overnight with us if she wants.

I think there's actually more than one yak, so plenty of yak time should be available. And last year there was also a young nilgai in the other pasture. Now, exactly how sociable are young nilgai bulls? Someone else can find out.
I was going to suprise you all Saturday morning....but figured id give you a heads up so i could see who wanted dibs on my 17 1/2mm x 89 hog slayer.... It is pushing a 500grain solid cast out of a 28inch barrel.... Manufactured by nef and evidently is a most sought after single shot.... Anyone that has Bob in their name gets cuts...
Plus I have to deliver some special eats for gunner.....
Got the prius rented.... Just waiting for Saturday morning....

Yup, those Brenekkes are cut like a giant wadcutter and are of a harder metallic compound, not rounded and smooth like most foster slugs, they let the blood out Brother.
I was hoping to drive my car this year to save on petro. Anybody got a smart phone to check updates on here incase I ditch her. I just put new mud tires on my truck and don't want to listen to the noisey things the whole time.
Oh yea Dats my drink! I'm a limousine ridin, jet flyin, kiss stealing, wheelin dealin greyhound drinking son of a gun wooo! I'm every womans dream and every mans nightmare woooo!

The sad thing is those were the two I was going to give 7X57Steve. Steve is 100% Irish and this constitutes a tragedy to him. See you tomorrow. Joe

Chatted with Steve. He's already murdered killed a pig of smoker size. It took all the skill and cunning of the experienced hunter he is. The tale of the hunt is epic and will be told around the fire and campfires of many generations that will come.

Drinking this Cherry you have a < 20% of panties dropping. Unless she drinks the whole jar and then you might just need to find a angle when she's passed out.
Man, that's just a slice of what the rest of the week will be like. I wish we could do the whole weekend this year. As it is, we're looking forward to seeing the rest of ya on Saturday.
Bob and Dan, thanks for a great time out on the town fellas.
You guys should hear Dan's karaoke version of "Ballroom Bash"
I hope you all have a good time and the weather cooperates.
I was holding out hope of being able to pull a surprise visit - to leave you all guessing "who was that a ole", but unfortunately, my vehicle accident and subsequent wrangling over medical and repairs has left me here to be an "a ole".
Rumor has it that the swine have finally reached with 10 miles of my place, so maybe I'll get one here.
It will late tonight when I get in. May be tomorrow morning... If anyone is checking off names there's no need to send a search party. I'll be there either late tonight or early tomorrow.

I'll see ya Saturday, Jay! It will be nice to catch up.....
Text Bobby (Rockchucker) and get in your goodbyes cuz when he gets back to camp he'll have nano-seconds before he dies a tortuous, painful death.
50 degrees, sunshine and lots of shooting this morning.
Dan has the brisket going and he's filling Pat's large shoes in grand fashion.
I put in a solo 3 mile hike around the hills this morning. Saw around 20 pigs but nothing special or over 200 lbs save for a solid, dark brown, mix razorback that tempted me...before I saw her piglets.
My laptop only works in the dining hall and my Sprint service truly sucks here so forgive the sporadic nature of my posts.
I'll try to post up again later today, after the afternoon hike.
So sorry I had to miss it this year. Taking care of the Wifey during and after her surgery this and last week - and glad to do so! - but I hope to be able to swing it next year.
Many thanks, Dan. Last year it was a prized orange hunting vest. George picked that up and kept it for me. I guess I am going to have to start tying every darned thing to me with 550 cord or something.
I laughed so hard from Wednesday till Saturday that I still have bags of frozen peas on my face.
By the way, we lifted a glass in your honor and it is alleged to have drained a bottle of Buffalo Trace faster than you can pour one out on the ground.
It was a wobbly trip up to the master's quarters after that.

It was a real pleasure to attend this event. No one could have had more fun that I did!! Thank you very much for all the work put in to make this wing ding such a success.
I'm just wondering who went home with the case of Mike's Hard Lemonade. I know they waited till everyone was gone and then packed it in their bag.
You could save a dozen children from a burning orphanage and nobody would remember it, but get caught drinking one Mike's Hard Lemonade and you are gay forever after.

Well gay sure but not to the point of yorkie gay. That's a whole new level of gay
Another good trip folks. Thanks to Steve, Bob and Dan for the coordination and especially for the great food.
A couple folks ask me for my true/pseudo spreadsheet I used for tracking checks. Drop me a PM with your e-mail and I can mail it out.

Nobody will see a crest whitening strips commercial ever again without thinking of this year's hog hunt. (Well, nobody from the Disciplinary Barracks, anyway.)
Little bitty fella like that is easy to miss with the camera. I hope he made it back home alright. It's always good to sit and shoot the anyhoo with Rich.
Pugs' 15-year-old nephew, who I don't believe has a Campfire handle yet, squeezes off a few rounds with Rockchuker's neat lil' carbine. This young man is a damn fine hunter, and a good shot with a shotgun, too.
I thought maybe this was Roof explaining how he was cruelly savaged by a local pitbull, but Pugs is laughing, so this is probably a different story. (Pugs' nephew in the center.)
Tanglewood, PAMac and, I believe this is Hi-Country. PAMac was just leaving to go see about a road-killed couger on I-65 at the exit with the pink T-Rex.
Gotta sign off fer now..... But definitely one of the best groups of the finest men and fellowship this country has to offer...... If ya don't believe it....you might be gay....

I'll sell the pics to the highest bidder.....G'night.....
I want to thank everyone for a great time. And those who organized it. The food was the greatest, you couldn't ask for any better. The guys at the disciplinary barracks are the greatest! They say laughter is the best medicine and I sure needed it! I laughed all the time. Thanks Friends and I sure hope to see you all next year!
well I got home a short while ago. Again a great time seeing everyone, great eats, great guns, and hunt. Little bit of gun trouble, but I did eventually get a small pig. She'll eat good
Apologies to Sandcritter for denting your steel plate. I'll work on making you something more durable
Just got back, slept some of it off, and will post more later. But first I have to reiterate what others have said, but with some emphasis. Bob ( Isaac) Dan, and 7x57 Steve put a LOT of work into this and literally made it what it was. Bob was the mother hen, no one wanted for anything if Bob was around, and he was always around. Steven organized, cleaned up after us reprobates, handled my knife for me so I wouldn't have to mess with it on the plane and loaned me a Ruger#1-S in .38-55 so I could hunt with not only a classy rifle, but a classic rifle. Dan ran his ass off cooking and prepping for all of us and his talents in the kitchen are now the stuff of legend, but I found he had one more talent.
I walked around all over the place like many others, just waiting and watching for something unusual in a pig, and held out till the last day. The last day found me tired and dragging so I was on a 'low impact- hunt' ( more sitting than moving.) when Dan showed up and offered to go to the top of the ridge and see if he couldn't locate and haze down some pigs. Within a minute I heard a warning shout and here came half a dozen pigs with Dan in hot pursuit, throwing rocks at them. There were a number of 80 lb 'eaters' in the group so I figured to let loose, but Dan realized at the same time that I did, that he was in the line of fire. Another rock thrown and a fast running New Yorker doing a flanking maneuver on the pigs put him out of harms way, the .38-55 went off. That whole hazing episode was so funny it made the trip for meas did a hundred other little things I got dealing with this group. They are as good as they are built up to be!
I'd like to echo RC's sentiments about Grapeape. Rich is a great guy in my book.
Oh, and happy birthday, Bobby!
Dang right, Rich is the man, nice to see/meet all the new hands at the pig hunt this time out, and sad to miss the regulars that couldnt be there this year.

Eh, don't worry about that. That's what it's for. The 300wby put a hurtin' on that puppy, didn't it? Next year, will turn it the other way and punch the dents back in
I had a blast like always. Sorry I missed PAMac on the last day.
we threw each other a quick wave when we passed each other on the squiggley road between the gas station and lodge..... Of course i was giv'n that glorified golf cart all it could take.....
16hr40min total drive time and 940 miles round trip...... For a seven hour visit was worth every nano second between......
Good food , good friends (old and new) , and outstanding feeds...... Has inspired me to come up with the word SuperUberFantaBulous ......

You da ironman on that 24 hr turn and burn, glad ya made it for a quick visit PAMac, and many thanks for the venison links, had near a pack of em for breakfast with eggs this morning.
I was pleased to see the four bottles of Rebecca Creek did indeed disappear by Sunday morning. One I noticed even walked over to the officer's quarters...
keep laughing but it will be mine, even if i got to dig you up after you die to retrieve it from your coffin, buried with it my arse, least it will be easy to find

George brought one up for me to try. We got some good news about my boy Rommel, and decided a toast was indicated

I gotta get me some-o-dat!
ill be in Texas next month, want me to bring home an extra if i find it?
The pigs seemed harder to kill this year I'm thinking I'm going to avoid gay boutique calibers in the future. Also need to see if I can duplicate the "hangfire" of that 99 Savage.
Patrick, what did the necropsy reveal on the piggy that absorbed some 300 Whisper abuse? He *had* to be flexing his abs Lee24-style to pull that off.
It was a fairly small pig. Two shots hit vital organs. The first was a little far back, but did get the lungs, and the 2nd grazed the heart and put more holes in the lungs. Both passed through, leaving exits almost identical to entrance. Little or no reaction to the first hit. I'm not impressed. A couple years ago I shot a similar size pig with the Colt 1911, with the Fed 230gr +P HST's, and it was on the ground immediately.
That's after shooting a doe with the 220 Matchking a couple years ago, and never recovering it despite a good blood trail. Think I'm done with subsonic loads in the BO.
Of course the day before the 99 had a hangfire, which I'm going to try to duplicate next time I'm at the range.
I will have my Sharps next year. Pigs do notice 500 gr flat points
Hey Doc, I can't believe you, bgcatty, and tjm10025 didn't complain one bit about my snoring.
Damn, but I thought it was pretty funny, coming in to the room with my flashlight and seeing you in your bunk, flat on your back, snoring like a herd of wildebeest ...
And wearing a pair of Bose noise-cancelling headphones.
Hey Doc, I can't believe you, bgcatty, and tjm10025 didn't complain one bit about my snoring.
The last time I went on a hunt like this, I woke up to an empty bunk house!
You guys were too kind, for sure!
Paul
Good exercise, fresh air, lots of laughs, and moonshine. Lots of moonshine.... Actually didn't hear a peep.
Was great to put a face to the name, Paul.
For those who haven't met Whelen Nut, he's a character, a treasure, and probably holding a whisky while wearing a blaze orange Viagra hat. At breakfastk no less. One cool cat.

Speaking of shine and such things, I tried some wonderful stuff called peach pie, and some called cherry pie. Excellent, but I noticed they disappeared when Bobby did.

we had to fight HugAJackass's wife for the apple pie last year
Jeff was so kind to see that I got a jar of cherry pie to take back to NY Great friends, OK food, outstanding cigars and liquor, mix in guns, shooting and "hunting" don't get much better!

As for this year's newbies; Tom (Ingwe),Joe (Follically Challenged), Joe (Tanglewood), Tony (Hi Country) Paul (Whelen Nut)and our newest and youngest(Jake)...I couldn't have scripted a better batch of good people.
Jake's dad, and Allen's brother, Greg, proved again this year why he's such a welcomed member of our 24H gatherings. Your help behind the scenes was noticed, I assure you. Thank you, Great Gatsby?? You've done a superb job as a father.
To the veterans...you know who you are. Thank you for another year of strengthening solid bonds, fond memories and friendship. Greg,Jeff,Paul and Scopebite,...you're veterans.
Dan...to my traveling partner and generous gift giver...A f'n plus,amigo...like always.
Steve(7x57)...you've perfected the show. Thank you.
With the exception of a few other favorites who couldn't make it this year, I still had the perfect long weekend.
To the birthday boy, I have two words for you...Brazilion Wax.

I would also like to chime in and commend Jake...he restored a bit of my hope in today's young adults.
You'll not find a more polite young man, as well as being handy with about everything he put his hands on. The pyro lessons were gratis and, unlike anything you "learned" from Bobby, can be repeated in mixed company.

George
Oh, Jesus. Jake, whatever you heard from Bobby, take with a number 4 shovel of salt and for the love of all things holy, don't repeat them to your momma.
Funny, I figured out quick that I had left my favorite coffee cup. Then when I got home, I got a message from Tanglewood that he had my coat, a camo bag, my reading glasses, and a flashlight.
I decided to refrain on Sunday to keep myself on an even keel, but thank goodness for sunrise Monday morning, because I was as thirsty as a bitch wolf.
It'll likely be Saturday for me..........18 hrs. on Wed. then back in Thurs. morn for the storm. Connor and I will either be in the woods, on the water or skiiing Friday.
Gunner......you're bigger'n me so I poured accordingly. If that Tanglewood fella would have pulled his weight..........(just joking, it was great adding him into the mix. He damn sure fit in)
George: good to finally meet you brudda! Thanks for my new hat! I'll dazzle the boys in the 420 group with it next month, just got the agenda today, looks like we are working various vehicles with 30 K9 teams. Also big time thanks for introducing me to Rebecca Creekthe new love in my life Gonna load up on it in Tejas in May.
gitem 12 : GFY!
The thong was a perfect fit, but the bra was too big for my moobsplus it was a tiger ( not leopard) printand you know I must simply have my ensemble match..

Great young man, I hope he continues to enjoy the shooting sports in the future, and joins us again next year.
Likewise! Itvwas humbling, to say the least, to pick your brain. I don't often meet folks who have likely forgotten more about my area of study than Ill ever pick up. Give the shep a congratulatory scratch for me.

They're all lucky we didn't make it up there, Sheridan. She had her eyes set on that all over again.
I had a awesome time. Missed the hell out my kids. But wished I would had stayed until Saturday dinner. Sorry dan for leaving early. Just my kids where ready for dad to come home.
CT: I was gonna let you have a go in the thong, since we were close enough to the same size, but I figured they guys in the barracks were looking a little too lonely, and would have had their way with you.repeatedly...
Kee-Rist! I don't know. If I had to guess though, it would be Bobby. I mean, it is his birthday and all.
I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall with George and Tom talking business with each other...
I was fortunate enough to be that fly, HAJ. It was a great deal like listening to a couple of bluegrass musicians talking to one another. I just sat and sipped a Blue Ribbon and was thankful for men who had their skills.

I haven't shot anybody since 2002. Was hoping to keep that behind me.
Dan thanks for all the hard work to feed everyone.
Bob thanks for the great cigars and hospitality you have always shown me.
Great seeing the veteran guys from last year. It was also a pleasure meeting Tony, ingwe, and the rest of the new guys it was truly a pleasure.
Bobby I hope your wife is one happy lady and she has mercy on you. BTW, Gold Bond is good for swamp ass. I'll bring you some next year with the pies.
Gunner it was awesome listening to you and your wealth of knowledge on guns and reloading not to mention my cheeks hurting for laughing and smiling listening to your stories.
Joel, I envy you being retired at 41...your my hero!
This is just handful of everyone that was there. Everyone was great sorry I couldn't name everyone but you all made it well worth the trip in so many ways. Thanks again for allowing me in your circle if friends.
Only 10 feet? Gunner could have just picked up the front end and done that.
I don't think Gunner, Joel and Rich could get into the same elevator.
PS Allen...I'm calling Westwood later this morning. I'll keep you posted.
Left John's Hopkins at 3 pm yesterday. Piece of cake, MD traffic wise, until I got to 495 W, near Tysons, and went into a 1.5 hour slow crawl to home. MD wins the traffic/roads game.
Dang Devil's boxes!!! For some reason I can't get my evil box to transfer my pics to photobucket. GRRRRRRR! I cannot add anything more to what has already been said about the fun this trip was! It wuz a pleasure to see Pugs' Brother and nephew show up. There are a LOT of off the scale great guys who run around loose and it has been my great privilege to have befriended them. The names of the guilty will be protected! Mebbe I could send the pics to someone and they could put them up!? ...and the "Kentuckys' Finest Cobra Venom" is something else yet
Just a little later, down at the big house, Pappy was telling us how he fed ET's tiger. He thought that was the funniest damn thing. Made his day.

Only you should be allowed to hunt the yak. With a Sharps.
Maybe next year. We'll get up a collection. How much is a yak, anyway?
That dog is Jacky, and he's a hunting machine. His short little legs are a bit of a disadvantage, but if he can get a ride most of the way up the hill, he will get after those pigs with a will.

camp dog?
He belongs to the owner, or a relative of the owner. Last year, his constant buddy was a male JR puppy from one of his litters. Can't remember his name.
Jacky was looking a little old and tired this trip, but last year, he rode up the hill to my downed pig, jumped out the window of a moving Suzuki Samurai, and started gnawing on the carcass. Plucking little bits of heart muscle out of the exit hole, the little bugger.
This year, I found him coughing a little bit, with a whitish discharge dripping from his penis shaft. I'm not sure how often he gets a checkup at the vet.
Here he is, this year, getting a little love from bgcatty.
i don know about that ive got two ankle biters around the house that are hunting fools...the wife mini dachshund thinks she is a bird dog cause her best buddy is my GSP and the schipperke is just a JRT but they started with husky type instead of hound type bloodlines damn dog will only "play" with stuffed animal type toys so she feels like she is killing something warned the youngest when she brought a damn hamster home that it had a short life span...Bear had it within a week...woulda been the first day but took her a bit to figure out she had to employ the GSP to knock the cage off the dresser first
This year, I found him coughing a little bit, with a whitish discharge dripping from his penis shaft. I'm not sure how often he gets a checkup at the vet.

sure your not mistaking him for ingwe?
which begs an answer to my previous question; did anyone test the yak?
yep except i didnt trip over gear.....after walking my knee was pissed and didnt get it as high as i thought i did and it caught the top of the side of the box when i was climbing in.....ive had so many surgeries and injections over the last 14 years the nerves that tell my brain exactly where my knees are sometimes dont work well and lie to me....
actually alot closer to being one than you prolly think....i just lucked out and had a couple of good days while i was down there last year really aint pretty when im having a bad day....
I didn't, either! Had I known, I'd have at least slicked-back my hair a little, screamed really loud after the shot, then done some high-fives and chest bumps with Roof & HiCountry. I guess I'm not cut out for those reality hunting shows.
"Too much fun" just isn't an adequate description of this year's get together. The camaraderie, the food, the tall tales, and the opportunity to fire all kinds of interesting firearms is a great formula for success. Thanks to all. I had a great time. Bill
Bullshooter loading up 'Old Betsy' with cap and ball for Doc. ... Doc tumbling a bowling pin with Tom's musket.
Whelen Nut- Thanks for making and posting those photos.
I had a lot of fun talking people into trying out the long rifle during the range session. I wish I had not run low on patches so that others could have tried it.
Long rifles like this one, if made properly with a swamped barrel, have a deceptive appearance. They look awkward, heavy, and unhandy. As several at the hog shoot discovered, they are surprisingly light, and the sights just seem to hang on target once they're lined up. Tom Snyder made this one for me in 2009. He's pretty talented, and was selected to build the NMLRA Raffle Rifle for 2013. That one is on the cover of the March 2013 issue of Muzzle Blasts.
I was especially impressed with young Jake. After 30 seconds of instruction about set triggers, he hauled up the rifle and solidly [u]smacked[/i] a bowling pine dead center at 60 (75?) yards.
Hello fellow pig slayers!! Finally got on here. I wanted to thank each and everyone of you guys. What a awesome hunt!!! Thanks Steve for handling the business end. Dan for the awesome food. Bob thanks for the words of encourgment to Jake. We are counting the days until the next hunt. Thanks to all you guys for letting Jake shoot all of your gun to. The Christmas list has already started!! Looks like a second mortgage in in my future!!
Thanks Isaac, never want to be known for not handling my share of the load. Looks like J is torn. 454 casull or a big rifle!! Might have to get both!!!
Thanks Tom I could sit around for hours and listen to you about your dog schooling. I found that fascinating. Had no idea of the depth. I have a new found respect for the k9's... even George!! LoL!!

Thanks for the kind wordsbut honestly, we never got into discussing it in depth. But George is good people, he knows his stuff and his dogs.
Like the others I enjoyed watching parenting done " the right way". Kudos to you.
Very kind words from everybody. Thanks guys. Good to have confirmation that what I'm doing is sinking in. I guess its easy when you have good stock to start with. I'll pass the kind word on to his Mom.
Yes. I have conferred with the rest of the "Campfire Grown Ups" otherwise known as the men in the husky britches. Along with me, Grapeape, Gunner and Ingwe all agree and declare it to be manlaw that the camera adds 50 pounds. Video ads 60 pounds.
We discussed it on the phone yesterday. Still not sure how it happened due to the consumption of spirits. We are both convinced that we both slipped and fell.
WOW!! Sounds like a good thing Jake didn't make it to the barracks!! With all the touchy feeling stuff!!! I known don't ask don't tell.... stress on the don't TELL!!

Dudeafter hearing about you getting shot then parting the guy's hair with his own pistol, I wouldn't slap you if I had a Real Leopard in my slapping' hand!

Noooo, CT stays at Disciplinary as you should. The up-and-comers have to stay in the mansion-on-the-hill so that the pantywaist brigade can tenderly raise them!

Serious question, here. I've noticed over the past three hunts, a few guys using .45 acp 1911s as their primary. (Not for finishers.)
Can we get a rough survey, here? How many of us have done that at the Wilderness Hunting Lodge?
So far as I can recall, these have been decisive kills, too. Real pig-stoppers, within reasonable range.
Not in Tennessee, but I shot one smallish pig at ~25 yards with the Colt .45. The shot was not perfect, being a little too far forward, but the pig dropped right there and quickly bled out. Federal HST 230gr +P

It's been interesting to see the different firearms and cartridges being used on pigs at the lodge, all in one location so you can see the results.
Quite aside from that wonderful old truth that placement is king, there just doesn't seem to be much that doesn't work.
I got to thinking about the 1911 when I read that other thread about the .308 being questionable for hogs. I was tempted to pile in with an argument in favor of the .45 acp, but then thought, nah.

Tom, Jake shot about 35 yard for the heart. 285 grain jacketed hollow point. I think by the 3rd it was done but hey he had 4 rounds left. I told him keep shooting tell it was down.
Funny I was just a the gun shop looking at .308's. I like the looks of the Ruger scout. 308. Jake being Jake he wants to go with a tactical type. I like the bolt action my self.

If I can get the striker situation worked out on my SxS action, I got a light and handy 30-30/30-30 that I was thinking of using.
What a wonderful hunt this year and what a great gathering of guys both old and new. I had a blast, literally. Amazingly I even hit some of the bowling pins with the 686 boomers in .357. Hope to see you all again next year wherever next year may be. Regards, Ben

I wish I could have been there to see that. What kind of velocity are you getting with those bullets?

Tell us about your SxS. Gunner's got us all in a lather over these.
I built it off a 16ga shotgun action, like my colt "dehaminator" seen here:
The 30-30 is scoped (no pictures of it), with a 1.5-4.5x and I haven't put the quarter ribs on it, because I've been waiting to bush the strikers on the action, due to pressure issues, before I do much else. And I haven't regulated it yet either but I've been shooting trail boss loads out of it just for giggles.
The SxS 45 colt works though. 1100 fps with 280gr SAA's. Makes big holes.
I have a Belgian made Browning, Superposed, trap, that I used to shoot ATA with...back in the day. Almost get a hard one when you close it and listen to it lock up...UFB smooth
IM/Full. IM for 16 yard, full for handicap.
I use it for hunting now...mostly doves, pheasants, rabbit quale, etc..
Pulverizes schit (TT)...at least when the operator does his part.
This year yes. Its just a couple bolts and the gear speed armature that snapped,I'll order the part and fix it in the spring ...which will probably be late June at this rate
I used to have my girls do it with a bucket and a small garden spade....until they had a garder snake near a pile after that they refused...girls,I know God giving me 2 daughters is pay back for my past indiscretions

One word Dan: SNOWBLOWER!!! ask Pugs its the way to go!! I use my ATV with a plow.
Greg, at the beginning of this winter, I told myself that this will be the last year with the shovel, and then in the fall of '14, I'll get my first machine.
And every storm this winter, I thought this will be the last one.
So next winter, I will have a bright, shiny, virtually unused snowblower in my garage because there will be no snow at all, and because that's how my luck usually runs in these things.

Thats what Pugs did. Bought one and no snow. But it has payed out big time the next year. So by all mean please buy one. That way we will not get snow next year!!! LoL!!
Guess I'll have to get into reloading after all OR get my brother some dies and supplys!!
Greg, you have a highly motivated 15-year-old shooter/hunter in the house. Just buy the reloading equipment. You won't ever have to pull a lever for the next three years or so.
I wasn't saying "ingwe", I was saying 303, 303, 303....

I thought maybe The Poohbah was gonna Leopard slap me and head off to Montucky with my little double.

I have a minimally motivated 12 year old, and I haven't pulled a lever on straightwall in quite a while.

Sounds like I'm getting into reloading then!! LoL!! Have to put him to work right away before collage then.
Ben and I can show you a few local stores that carry reloading components, for when you don't want to pay the hazmat fee on a single pound of powder from Midway.
. I killed this pig late Friday morning. It was moving at a brisk trot with a group of a couple dozen other animals when I shot it from about 40 yards. Only one shot was needed. The bullet went through both shoulders and lungs, resulting in a bang-flop-flip-flop. The rifle is a M67/89 Swedish Rolling Block, built by the Swedes under license from Remington. It's chambered for the 8x58mm Rimmed Danish cartridge. Bullet was a 170-grain cast flat-nose at about 1850 fps, about equivalent to a moderate 32 Special or 32-40.
The rifle may have been the oldest used for a pig this year. It was made in 1873 and the Swedes rebarreled it to 8x5 sometime after 1889. Did anyone use a Sharps or another oldie made before 1873?
The medal in the stock is interesting, and indicates the rifle was awarded as a prize in a 1942 Swedish shooting contest. Somehow it seemed appropriate for a 24hourcampfire adventure. .
. Load details for those who like to know such: Cases were fire-formed from Prvi Partisan 8x56 Rimmed Austro-Hungarian brass. These are a couple millimeters short of 8x58RD cases, but work fine. The bullet was the RCBS #32-170-FN gas-checked, cast from #2 Lyman alloy, heat-treated, sized to 0.324", and SBG lubed. The load was a healthy dose of Accurate 5744. (Evil Twin agreed with me that this powder is wonderful in such applications.) The shot at the pig produced a slight fracture at the neck of the case, so the case will be discarded. It had been reloaded 20 times.

Well, on the bright side, my Jake and Greg birthday and Christmas gifts are taken care of for a while. On the downside my .38 and .45 ACP brass supply just dried up.

Bob, cool story, and rifle! The oldest one here at the moment is from 1900.
I was surprised to learn that the .351 Winchester, and the 6.8mm SPC use the same shellholder. So I guess I will have that one running next year
Thanks Tex and Mac, I'll keep er down to just one very GOOD 1911, already know this pistol shoots my carry load to the sights, finished my hog with a shot slightly quartering to me.
Bullet broke jaw, went out the back of the skull and butcher found it in the second neck vertebrae.
lol I know that. I'm still smiling like a kid at Christmas when I think about the past weekend.
JFC! You Uncle Tommin' MFer. They make you cook for them and do their laundry too? I may just have to attend one of these hog slaughters just to shame you into clocking CT. Stop talkin' 'bout it and start bein' 'bout it!

Hooray, Leighton's cooking for seafood night at the 2015 boar hunt!
I've been searching my ass off for the good doctor's 7x57.
I didn't discuss prices with the doc since he wasn't near ready to part ways from that beauty but I have specially set aside 350 bucks to quickly pick one up if it avails itself. Even told the M.D. I'd throw in a prenup. Ingrate!
I don't know if I can wait out sandcritter so if any of you find one, please let me know straight away. And don't buy it first expecting to make more money off of me.
Every time I saw Doc he had that rifle slung, even at the lodge for extended conversations.can't really blame him but if you write up a pre-nup for him, be sure that he retains possession of that 7x57! Meanwhile I'll be on the lookout for one Bob,though it may cost as much add $375so keep saving! If you would have accepted a little scratch from me for the rental car, the food, and all you guys did, you'd have enough by now! But Nooooooooooooyou have to be "crazy-generous"!!!
Really...Tom, Bob and Dan went way over the top in their generosity...

Tony...since I no longer imbibe, I was simply going to gift it to my hunting buddies for a "opening day pass around in camp till it's done" kind of thing. If you're out, you and your lovely wife and friends can knock out one of the two bottles...with my blessings.
Dan and I did nothing the other 28 guys wouldn't have done for the group. You saw it with Joe for your return flight. That pulled venison with a bite Joe made was frikken good. Kentucky is populated by some fine men.
Dan, Pat, Steve, Allen and myself simply have it down to a easy planning science since we've done it so many times.
Getting you to camp was my pleasure,Tom. Next time I'll get a bigger SUV. I had no idea you were as big as the other three Gigantors in camp.
Oh yeah, almost forgot...happy to hear about Rommel. I knew you were carrying that weight and I'm glad it turned out well. I trust he's back in full regal swing.
I told you you'd be sorry that you missed the earlier outings. Talk Sam into going with us next year.
I'll give you a shout for turkey hunting out at the farm in Warrenton. It's loaded with them. It will also give you a chance to check out the property for some Fall deer hunting.
Dan, Pat, Steve, Allen and myself simply have it down to a easy planning science since we've done it so many times.
Some of you guys have a born gift for organization and planning, and the rest of us benefit mightily from it. I'm grateful for everything you've done. Sorry I didn't get up at 5:00 to wave goodbye on Sunday morning, though.
And if Steve posted here a little more often, we could thank him a little more for all the behind-the-scene stuff he does, not only during the hunt, but well beforehand as well. What a terrific gentleman he is.
Well fellows sounds like a Banner Hunt this year, how about a few more pics? did anyone get a group pic? I realy hope to make it one of these times. like to have a drink or too with the gang, how many took hogs this year?

Steve and Pugs sure did a lot of the logistics, and the actual hard work! All of you are class acts for sure. Thanks again for everything, including your concern, at a time when you had little concern to spare.

Was just down at the same honey hole this AM debating how much I wanted a particular old Suhl shotgun(s) vs. other priorities... (Other priorities won this time).
P.s. remember, don't care who did what... can live in a tent, but certain old rifles and shotguns stay with me.

Another view, but with the 'yooper'.
The old Swede must have already made its way back to the lock box.

Paul- Thanks for posting the picture with the 4-wheeler. I'd dropped the rifle off in my truck on the way to find a guide. I didn't want to risk banging it up on the trip to retrieve the piggy.
The photo of the pig and rifle (below) shows that there's a drop off of about a foot at the left edge of the rock on which the rifle and pig are resting. When I helped the guide heave the pig onto the front rack of the 4-wheeler, I stepped back off the rock and went ass-over-teakettle down the slope. I suspect the guide was worried that he might have to dump the pig and haul me back instead. Fortunately, nothing except my dignity was hurt.

Sharing the long smokepole was my privilege and pleasure.
A week before, almost exactly to the hour, I had been shooting it in a local competition in the UP of MI. Temperature was minus 8 F, with some wind driving the chill downward, so three days in the TN sun felt really splendid. Photo below is a yooper father-daughter team at that March 1 shoot. Enjoyed watching this 'un from afar. Glad you all enjoyed. Some damned fine people here.
My Wilderness Hunting Lodge hog was calling to me from the freezer
So I did this
And topped it with this
Then added this
And over the course of about 5 hours, let it do this
And for my efforts, I was rewarded with this
Given that I've only used the smoker twice before, and had never attempted ribs, I was rather pleased with the results. When otherwise picky, non game-eating juveniles are begging for more, I get the feeling I did something right! I was concerned that the meat pulled so far away from the ends of the bones, but the ribs were tender & delicious.
I also smoked a rack (not nearly as meaty) from a previous hunt, and was pleasantly surprised that it was still fairly moist & tender. I was pleasantly surprised by this, since I didn't bother brining them. I may have to try that next time, to compare & contrast.
In the meantime, I think I'll try some smoked shoulders.
Weber Smokey Mountain, in the 18.5" persuasion. I did a mash-up of basic ribs recipes from virtualweberbullet.com .
1) Wrapped with Stubbs Rub & overnighted in fridge 2) Trimmed up to roughly St. Louis style 3) 2 hours at 235-240 4) Squirted with apple juice, wrapped in foil, & did another 2 hours 5) Unwrapped, slathered with KC Masterpiece, and did about 45 minutes
Delish!
I had wanted to keep it at 225 or so, but it was windy as [intercourse]. Next time, if I don't skip the water in the pan altogether, I'll at least start with room temp water, instead of boiling water. Like I said, I'm a rookie.
I forgot about that! We were visiting the folks at Thanksgiving that year, & my BIL shot a buck on the farm that morning. It's interesting how a 7 year old perceives things like that.
I tried a new slow cooker sauce with the pork loins. Campbell's Apple Bourbon BBQ sauce. Had it in the slow cooker about 5 hours, and it was darn yummy. Served over mashed taters with bacon.
Got back Sunday from my visit in Florida with a 94 year old hunting buddy who introduced me to Wyoming deer, antelope and elk hunting. He's a great guy, and pretty sick. It may be the last time I get to seem him. Friends from his generation are all pushing up daises and I'm about all he has.
Many thanks to all for making the 2014 Hog Hunt so good. I think there were at least 3 volunteers for everything that needed to be done. And it is sure as hell is fun to have too much fun with such great guys.
The MVP was Dan who did just about everything, and did it to perfection. He was up at 4:00 AM to start preparing some of the best food we have ever had, and he was the last to go to sleep. And in between that, he worked his ass off on everything else. A great guy we are all fortunate to call a friend and a hunting partner.
Pugs did all the paperwork and details for sign ups and deposits for us and did a terrific job. Had it not been for him, chaos would have reigned. And he also unscrewed Wilderness at the end when they had screwed up payment issues.
Bob was his typical incredibly generous self, providing the meat(ground steak, not hamburger) along with a bunch of other things for our First Night. He has done this every year and it's the perfect way to start off our Hog Hunt. Congrats, and much gratitude to him again.
My apologies to the guys who brought all the other great food we had. I just saw a whole lot of terrific food and did not know who brought what, so I can't thank them by name. I suspect it was just about everyone. We had more food this year , and even better than ever.
This was the first year that we had the hunting at Wilderness all to ourselves. In prior years, there were a number of interlopers, many of whom were jerks, and they were kept out this year. Congrats to Wilderness for getting it right this time.
We want to continually improve the process every year, so if you have any thoughts on that, please PM Bob, Allen and me with your suggestions.
Many thanks to all for making the 2014 Hog Hunt so good.
You modestly left yourself out of the thank-you list, Steven.
You are always the first to arrive and the last to leave, and you do a hell of a lot of work negotiating through the year with the owners of the lodge. You do most of the dishes, too. You are one of the essentials, and we all know it. Many thanks.
I'm glad you got to spend a little time with your old hunting buddy. We've got a spread of age in this group, and I'm hoping we'll all stay in touch through the years in the same way, looking out for each other.
Darn right TJM, my hats off to alla the Men who work their butts off to make this happen, a lot of behind the scenes work done that is never seen by the rest of us reprobates.
I feel like I should send the guys a check for all of their hard work.
I fell for the Baer KoolAid myself, Gunner. Got a chance to break the first five shots after mine left the factory and they all went into a hole about the size of a 50 cent piece at 15 yards.
Yeah, you could shoot up all my 215 Woodys in that 303 and eat buttered cat-head biscuits and homemade jams and jellies till you were blue in the face.
unfortunately its a long damn way from here to Docs and already going to be gone for 10 days.....if i make an extra detour the locks may be changed when i got back home

minor problem is, the dealer thinks it's a 7x57 AI, but it's stamped just plain 7x57. Guess I'll just have to kill a deer with it, to figger out the difference...

Jeff, thanks again for the health juice. Cures what ails ya, and does drop panties. It's amazing!
