Common sense becomes irrelevant once the Alzheimer's takes over. We watched the MIL and a favorite Uncle go that way. They become very unpredictable and prone to anger. The MIL got quite violent the last couple years.

An older coworker was afflicted by Alzheimer's in his 70s. His wife was taking care of him at home, until the day he got out the shotgun and killed her. A half hour later, he did not know what had happened.

They did not even have a trial. They just put the old codger into a care facility.
