When you drive down the road do you stay in the middle of the road until 'you think' oncoming traffic has seen you and then move back into your proper lane?

I'm just finishing up a 8 mile walk with my dog, he's gets a 5 hour workout every morning.
Must admit, I've been a bit distracted a time or two when cars passed by us during our walk.
Thank gawd my dog understands his position along a roadway and remains safe without my guidance.
