To me the OP question has two answers.

It is not too much gun for a rifle looney or anyone who just enjoys frequently shooting rifles.

It is obviously too much gun for people who do not really enjoy shooting. Or hunters who depend on a gun salesman for advice.

When I was a teen in the late 50's and early 60's the canned sales reply was something like this: You will need a .270 to hunt wide open country, or a 30-06 if you hunt in woods or brush, or if you ever intend to hunt elk. Or just buy a 30-06 and you will never "have to" buy anything else.

Ridiculous, but I think these are among the reasons we see a lot of '06 shooters crowding the ranges in the autumn that don't now what they are doing, shoot a basketball size 20 shot 100 yard group and leave rubbing their shoulder after one round eventually goes into the bulls eye.
