There were lots of people right there between the cars when the first shooting happened. Kyle was trying to retreat, rather than kill someone. Retreat is a valid defense, especially where mobs are concerned, and you don't really want to kill someone if you don't have to.
Was he cut off, or cornered? Before he could even get around the car after shooting the guy, there were others there.
I think pink shirt "shoot me, [bleep]" boy was the main aggressor. He paid for his bad judgement.
But retreat before deadly force doesn't mean he was frightened. It may mean he just didn't want to kill anyone if he could retreat.
