The sun is not your friend, especially it you’re a White man. When ya get down to the sub- tropics ditch the gimme caps and get some real hats, and all them lightweight nylon fishing shirts (UPF 50) come with long sleeves for a reason.
The standard Peace Corps advice was ya gotta give a place at least a year before you really know how bad a place sucks, or doesn’t.
