They would leave giant chipmunk tracks. Even a lowly local constable would have seen them tracks.
And besides that, the search dogs would have hauled ass after them and tracked them chippies down. Any dog worth it's salt could not resist going after a giant chipmunk. I mean, look at how wound up they get over regular 'munks.
