If, indeed, Ms Palin is the VP pick, McCain pulled off a coup. With what little I've been able to glean from the internet about her, she appears to be a decent pick - quite conservative - pro-life, pro-gun, NRA Life member, not ethically challenged, a "hockey mom" of 5 (youngest born April '08 with Down's Syndrome), sportswoman and very easy to look at. We will learn much more about her in the coming hours and days.

For one thing, most Americans won't understand, and for another, the McCain campaign will have fleshed that out enough to give a coherent response. Between Obama, Biden, McCain and Palin, Palin is the only one with experience in running something beside their own campaigns and their mouths. She is an executive responsible for running a state government, meeting payrolls and preparing budgets. The other three are all from the Senate "talk, posture, berate and argue" club, and not responsible for a single outcome.

I think she is the best, and most experienced, of the four! And she is right(in both senses of the word) on the issues.

The mother/CIC thing doesn't bother me at all. I think the next few days will be critcal. If the public perceives this is just a gimmick, it could backfire. The lack of foreign policy experience is a negative.

However, given his "maverick" nature, I don't see McCain as picking someone just to "secure the base" or "the woman vote" or whatever. I mean, we were worrying up to the last minute whether he was going to pick Lieberman! So, we have to figure she was well vetted, and his handlers have been bringing her up to speed on the issues where she needs help.

She is from a small town like many of us, she is a life member of the NRA, she has in her first term as Gov of AK stopped a lot of the wasteful spending and corruption, even taking on the head of her own party to do so. She is pro life, pro gun, pro alternative energy, and pro conservation.

Pathetic.

As the days go by, Palin's credentials will emerge to make her a great choice for VP, with very wide appeal. Look for a post-convention bounce for McCain that O'bama was dreaming of.

Population does matter, Moose, Bears, Caribou etc. don't vote. Nor does AK have the issues that the larger populated states do. That's great from a resident's view, but from a political experience view, her bag of tools, isn't as experienced as it would be in a more populated state. She's got to be thinking fifty states, and the world, versus one state.

I am glad of the decision, but she's got alot to learn. The duty of the VP is the Pres. of Congress. I do feel she's up to the challenge to learn, and us Republican's are proud of the choice.

The Alaska folks liked her running their state. So, I am fine with her running my country. If they like her then that is good enough for me.

I have found that the general Alaskan's values align pretty well with mine.

I'd say I'm pleased with McCain's choice for VP, the only two persons I particularly cared for were Palin and Jindal. I understand she may not be as well known as some but, she's a step in the right direction for the Republican party. A true conservative, imagine that. Much about leadership is allowing those around you to succeed. Setting them up for success and allowing them to be empowered. When the time comes for tough decisions the leader makes them but the leader is also surrounded with good people. They are in a position to pick the people around them, the people that will make daily decisions, that will lead.

I'm in a position where I not only enforce policy, I create policy. I haven't had the opportunity to pick the folks that work for me, but I have allowed them to succeed. You want people around you that will make decisions and they will make these decisions knowing you are behind them 100%. We, as a unit, have achieved some wonderful records and it isn't me, it's the wonderful men in my charge that have done it all. I ensure they have what they need to accomplish their job and buffer them the massive amount of 'stuff' that comes along.

I'm fortunate to have had these men in my charge, I can only imagine how much success someone (the President of instances) can have when they are allowed to PICK the people around them. Of course not all people in leadership positions are leaders and it's their inability to pick correctly and foster those in their charge is what frightens me (Obama for instance).

It's fun watching people with no leadership abilities discuss picking a leader, it's scary watching a person with no leadership qualities in a position of leadership.

Someone who understands no matter how alternative we get with energy, we will still need oil.
Someone who is not affraid to take on big business
Someone who is not affraid to say God or Jesus and believes what I do
Some who cares about my right as an American to carry and own a firearms.
Someone who is not affraid to go across the isle and get things done.

McCain met some of those, but Palin accordind to her bio meets the ones he don't.

I am in love and energized once again about the election. And to top it off, if McCain wins, she'll spoil it for Hillary and Osama.

When she (Palin) became Guv I put her picture on the wall along with Stevens' and Young's etc. It was kind of a surprise to see the teenage boys oggle the pic and actually give nice comments.

But for all her physical attractions, it is a very refreshing surprise to hear what she says when she opens her mouth. She is definitely not an airhead. She is quite on the ball and will make, I think, a good running mate for McC. (I'd sure rather have inexperience in the #2 seat rather than the #1. And that does not mean that her relative inexperience in "big" politics is as huge an issue as is Obies')

I think this is the greatest news I have heard since the entire election process started months ago.

Since MLK gave a speech using "I have a dream" all those many years ago, I think Obamma needs to start drafting a concession speech that is best titled "I Had A Nightmare and her name was Sarah Palin". Thinking of the VP matchup of Biden vs. Palin, I didn't think Biden was a good choice for O'bama, and I think he is even a worse choice now.

Good point, Penny. When our son was 14 and our daughter 9, my wife went back to college to work on her bachellor's degree. She took 2 night classes per semester for ten years, plus some summer classes. We talked about it extensively before she started back to college, knowing that we as a family were going to have to make sacrifices, and that I was going to be "Mr Mom" in many respects for quite a while. All this while she worked full time (I did, too) in a very time demanding mid-management position at a Fortune 500 company. Both our kids graduated HS in very good standing. My bride graduated with honors with a business degree the year after our daughter graduated from HS. I was never more proud of any of my bride's accomplishments than the day she walked across the platform and received her diploma. It (working a demanding job and raising a family) can, and has been done by many women, men and families. Todd Palin has to be one of the most proud husbands in the USA today - and very rightly so.

So you're voting for her solely on the fact she's a woman? jorge

You're wrong because you are focused on the wrong issues. The Palin pick was much more about turnout in November than about pulling in undecided voters. There was the potential for a lot of conservatives sitting the election out if McCain had picked a liberal/moderate for VP. I'm glad someone talked some sense into McCain and his handlers so that he chose a conservative for VP.

I am not a betting man but if I was I would put a years pay on them having already done it. They probably have been digging on each of the potential candidates for quite some time now.

I understand the sentiment that there were better choices out there to fill the slot.

But there was absolutely no better choice for winning the election.

I think the country will be quite suprised when they get a chance to find out who she is, and how well she speaks.

From what I've been reading on another forum (one that is clearly more hostile to the Palin selection), the McCain campaign needs to create opportunities for Palin to talk about her experience in concrete terms -- something O'bama has done very little of.

She needs to bring up specific examples of how she fought corruption, how she made difficult choices, how she reformed government, how she opposed her own party, and how she governed despite her 'hotness.' (I'm sure she'll do a better job than I can.)

I woke this morning with the fear that McCain had picked Lieberman. So glad that he threw us a bone instead of sticking us in the eye again. I'm back on board and will be happy to vote come November.

About 20+ years ago, I served a stint as my university's Director of Academic Computing. Back then we had a big mainframe computer (VAX) and one day a repairman was there. I entered the computer room and asked what was wrong with the VAX. The guy took one look at me and said, "It's broken." I didn't know whether to laugh or smack him. That kind of patronizing, condescending attitude is all too common. You've never experienced it? That's because you're not a woman trying to make it in a man's world.

Happily, right after he said that, the Director of the Computer Center (who is Barak's Dad ), came in. He saw me and the repairman, and said to the repairman, "Oh, let me introduce you to Dr. XXX, our Director of Academic Computing." I thought the repairman was going to wet himself.

Rockmore had spent a few days with us just a week before. I knew another crew member on the same flight.

Also "met" a Navy Seal on Christmas Eve many years ago when he popped up in front of a raft we had seen in the lights out in front of the boat. Snowing hard, Christmas Eve maneuvers, miles from shore in the Gulf of Alaska and they have been the least arrogant military guys I have ever met. Due to the training base on Kodiak I have actually gotten to meet several of them. I have nothing beyond respect and admiration for them.

I saw it right away this morning on FOX. I listened for quite a while about how she fishes, hunts, NRA, has five kids, one with Downe's which she refused to abort. Her oldest signed up on Sept 11 last year and is going to Iraq. Her husband is a steel worker for Bp, she was against the bridge to nowhere. Etc, etc.... Kilmeade said she gets up at midnight to shoot moose!

While I was waiting for the speech, I figured I better check out the other news channels to see what they had to say. I switched to CNN where I learned that she was involved in getting a police officer fired that her sister (or whatever) was divorced from, she was in the pocket of big oil, etc..... They wondered how a woman with five kids, (one special needs) could possibly care for them while being the VP. The "host" (guy) asked a female reporter how a woman could possible be VP, with five...... The female reporter paused, looked very irritated, shuffled her feet, bent her head slightly down and forward with a hard stare into the camera and said: "Some would ask if you would have that question about a man with five kids." The guy didn't even get it. I laughed like heck!

Did I hear correctly that he is a USW member? If so that's an interesting twist.

Scorpion: Prior to the class of 76, all graduates from the Naval Academy could only graduate with BS degrees in some type of engineering. After that date, even though the only degrees one gets from Annapolis are Bachelor Of Science degrees(they make you take enough math, physics, chemistry to meet that threshold) you can still get a major in a Liberal Arts discipline, but it's still a BS versus a BA. jorge

I can probably get you the exact stats in a few days if you're interested. My current job affords me the ability to look at all of that. I'd say the majority do not opt for engineering. Your final GPA has a LOT to do with what type of warfare designator you want to pursue so the higher your GPA, (and assuming you are physically qualified) the greater your chances of getting your first choice, be it aviation, surface line, nuclear power, supply, intel, etc. jorge

Not quite. There are other factors involved. First and foremost the "Needs of the Navy" come first then there is also a long standing test that gauges your aptitude for flying. It's a pretty neat test actually. In my current job as the "Dean Wormer" of Naval Aviation, I get to screen all that apply that want to come to Pensacola. But yes, if your class standing with a BS in say history is higher than someone's with a BS in Aeronautical Engineering, AND your aptitude test is high enough, yes you'll get in. Where it gets sticky is with the "Nukes." They have the final say on how the Ensigns get farmed out and if you are a "40 pound head" and the nukes want you, they get you. Lots more, but I don;t want to hijack the thread. PM if you like. jorge

From what I know so far, in terms of getting himself elected, McCain swung for the fences and seems to have hit a home run. This seems to be quite unexpected in most quarters. A guy that calls our local afternoon sports talk show is Palin's brother in law. He lives in Linden WA but is a big Bama fan from Mobile. Even he was floored.

Some background that he gave: She's was a point guard on her state's HS state champion BBall team in Idaho (I think he said). She has her degree in journalism and writes all her own stuff. Athletic, attractive (appears to have had some 'work' done to me), married to one of the big dogs in the Alaskan commercial fishing industry. Can't find anything to hate yet for me.

I wouldn't spend too much time trying to decide whether or not she is a good pick until we hear more from her, and see how she performs in the debates. Hell the way I see it she has just as much experience as Obabma does and seems quicker without a teleprompter.
