When I hunted public land in upper Michigan the most prominent deer rifles encountered were the "turdy-turdy" in a lever action of some flavor or the "ought six" in a Remington pump or semi-auto. Southern area was a Remington 870 or an Ithaca 37 Deerslayer. In the southern zone today I would say the Ruger American in .450 dominates.
