The Remington 742 and 760 in .30-06 along with lever .30-30s used to be the rifles of choice here. Now bolt guns predominate with .30-06, and .270W predominating. The WW-2 generation wanted semi-auto and deer hunting was done with dogs mostly. Lots of deer hunters used shotguns and buckshot. Buckshot is a terribly deficient choice for deer past about 25-30 yards.
