They could crank the ball turret back up into the fuselage so the turret gunner didn't have to spend the whole mission in the turret. The turret was always cranked back up into the fuselage for takeoffs and landings. I'd guess that, yes, the legs did fall asleep now and then, and the other gunners could drag the ball turret gunner out if need be.
