I don’t understand your quandary.

David killed Goliath with a sling and a stone. He then ran over and used his sword to remove Goliath’s head.

Simple. Using the sling to kill Goliath and wearing a sheathed sword is not mutually exclusive to the story.

1 Samuel 17:51 "David ran and stood over him. He took hold of the Philistine’s sword and drew it from the sheath. After he killed him, he cut off his head with the sword."

David entered the battle field with a sling and five smooth stones. Per the scripture above, David knocked out Goliath with a stone, and then used Goliath's sword to kill and decapitate Goliath.
