We have a new place to hunt and at a different time of the year.
The new hunting spot is Wilderness Hunting Lodge in Tennessee, just off of I-40. See www.wildernesshuntinglodge.com for more details.
Wilderness was recommended by four members of the Fire, cal74,maddog,bea175 and Mike762.
Hunting Experience:
Based on their recommendations, I went to Wilderness this past Spring to try it out, and was very impressed. The hunting is very real with the choice of spot and stalk, using a stand(ladder or elevated boxes) or following dogs. I'm a spot and stalk guy and really liked what they provided.I also like to hunt alone, all of which I did for just about three days. The hunting area is large, though fenced in, and the hills and valleys made for an excellent hunting experience. Hogs seem to be oblivious to fences and they were clearly wild and spooky.
I have no interest in hunting exotics, which they have, but I sure liked seeing them in the woods with me. That surprised me somewhat and I started looking for them just to enjoy the experience.
I got a large boar(250 lb) late in the afternoon of the third day with a single shot from my new to me Ruger#3 30-40. Because the hunting area mostly has mature trees, 100+ yard shots are not unusual. My shot was about 35 yards. And binocs are very helpful.
Lodging
If we have 15 or more hunters, we will have a lodge all to ourselves. The log building is pretty new, perfectly clean, has a kitchen and a large meeting area. You can see a picture of it on the website. We will also have a new outside stone grill because I told them that Pat would demand it and it was not a good idea to annoy him.
Guides:
Each guide I dealt with was superb, and willing to do whatever it took to make my hunt rewarding and successful. They took me into the woods on a 4-wheeler and dropped me off wherever I wanted to go.
Food
The food, served buffet style, and Southern , is wholesome, though not necessarily healthy. The main meal is served at noon and is good, but probably not equal to Carryonah. I figure we can take care of ourselves for supper on the grill.
Meat Processing
They have a separate building with a very large cold locker for the meat processing. The butchers are really skilled and very cleanly. The differences from Carryonah will be stark. And strangely enough, everyone seemed to get all the parts of the animal they wanted. They don't have any three or five legged boars there.
Length of Stay
Much different from Carryonah, we get three days of hunting and four days of lodging. We'll arrive on the afternoon of Day 1, hunt on days 2,3 and 4, and leave on the morning of Day 5.
The tentative schedule will be for us to arrive on Wednesday, 14 March, hunt Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and leave Sunday morning, 18 March.
The reason for the change of dates from December to March is that we all seemed to have multiple options to hunt in December, but we were all struck with cabin fever in March. So this is the suggested antidote.
Cost:
For 10-19 hunters, the cost is $695 per hunter. It drops to $675 if we have 20 or more.
My special thanks to maddog,cal74,mike762 and bea175 for their advice and recommendations. If they have a chance, I would appreciate their adding their experiences to mine so that you do not just get a single data point(mine).
Please let us know if you have any questions. The co-conspirators for this venture are isaac and Pugs. And I do hope that isaac does not guarantee that the hunt will be a lot of fun.
Ed, A $250 deposit is required. I paid the remainder of my bill at the end of the hunt.
Wilderness provides all the food. However, we have had a grill of different meats, plus other stuff, at the end of each day that we provided. Pat is the chef in charge at the grill and the food has been incredible.
Need to warn you though that we all stand around a campfire in the evening and sometimes some of our group had too much brandy and almost fell in the fire.
Here are some pics from the hunt my son and I had in March of 2010. We were there about the same time in March as this hunt is planned. My son and I hunted spot/stalk by ourselves, and I did set one stand. Wilderness has more "pure russian" type hogs than any place I ever hunte, including Caryonah and Clarkrange.
one of three lodges.
my son with his boar.
me with my hog.
big hog another guy took, while we were there.
You boys that go, will have a great time. I'll have to see later on if I can join you all on this hunt. Just got back, last month from my safari in Zimbzbwe....need to check funds!
Lesse, I'm fresh outta boar, running low on buffler and the timing looks pretty good. George, If'n ya want a flanker, I'm in. Gonna have a new buffler rifle to get blood on.
Rifle SUPPOSED to be here sometime next month. A Sharps natcherly but in one of the OLD buffalo stompers,44/90 BN. Hope I kin piss off a boar enuff for a charge and meet it with that
Hay Steve that sounds great, sign me up!A good time to shake off that cabin fever. We just bought my nephews 4-H pig so I don't how I am going to tell Shelly we need to make room for another 200lb of sausage but I have a few months to come up with something You are going to have my favirot beverage aren't you. Joe
No license is required, and if your wife does not hunt, the cost to her is $275 for food and lodging. If she hunts, it's the same price as everyone else.
Hope you both can make it.
You may want to pull up the Wilderness web site and check it out.
I'm planning on posting a list of those going on the hunt, along with the firearm they intend to use. I'll do this about a month before the hunt.
Will also try to get pictures at the hunt of the hunters with their firearms and post them. The Fire will be able to connect a handle with a face and a firearm.
I'd love to go. It sounds like a great hunt and a lot of fun. My father and I have talked about going on a hog hunt and black bear hunt the last few years. We aren't talking much anymore so that'll never happen.
Being that I had back surgery this past March and will be out of a job by as soon as I'm released to go back to work. I would've been laid off Sept. 9th if I wasn't still on comp recovering. Money is going to be super tight as much as I'd love to go.
Take a lot of pic's and post them for us that can't go to see!
You've sure had a string of bad luck. Hope things turn around for you real soon.
Pics will be posted after the hunt, and there always seems to be a lot of good stories and memories after these boar hunts that keep getting mentioned. Some sort of history in the making.
I'll write more later when I'm able, but I was there a few years back with a group of guys who had also been there the previous year.
We all had a good time, is it a hunt of a lifetime? Probably not, but for a fairly inexpensive hunt I don't think you could do much better. Accommodations at the time were decent/comfortable. Food was good, had plenty throughout the day available.
I hunted with my bow and had quite the time getting a decent sized boar, but ended up with the largest in our group and was the only archery hunter.
I'll get back to this later, have a pile of paper work sitting in front of me.
Thanks for posting you experience at Wilderness. I think that those who are considering hunting there will benefit from multiple reports from those who have hunted there.
How come your not going to Caryonah? Did it have to do with the TWRA changing the Reg's. on wild hogs? They've been removed as a big game animal and are now listed as a non-protected species. It increases the hunting opportunities.
There is no more wild hog hunting in TN. on private land. Special control measures have been implemented for landowners.
If Wilderness is 100% fenced, and Caryonah isn't, they may fall under the new Reg. provisions of private land. The TWRA doesn't want them running around breeding anywhere and everywhere. Or did you just get a better deal?
The advantages of Wilderness over Carryonah are significant, though I liked both. If I thought you were asking an honest question, I would answer it.
You were a troll when we hunted Carryonah, and it looks like nothing has changed.
All we are is a bunch of guys (and hopefully some gals) who very much enjoy getting together and going on a good hunt. Nothing complicated.
Don't know why that would even interest you.
Steve
I asked you an honest and sincere question? If you don't want to answer that's fine. At least your spending your money in Monterey, Putnam Co. and the state of TN. we appreciate it.
I was at wilderness back in the late 80s we had a ball! Alan was a great host and the food was great, we did a turkey Hog hunt back then, id like to go might have to bring an old 303 savage 99, keep me in mind, would depend on work April waould be a No for sure. the big log lodge was new when i was there. I shot a 400bl. hog with 4in. tusks but was a mix of red brown and white, would love to get a russ. looking one for the wall!
You've sure had a string of bad luck. Hope things turn around for you real soon.

Thanks, my son would love to go, he's 10 so he wouldn't have a firearm, just be tagging along. He loves to go hunting with me. If fact I can't go hunting or to the range without him. Maybe some day!
There's not a guy from the Fire who would not say that the most important thing you can do is hunt with your children, and you are doing that with your son.
You may want to show him the hunting pictures on this thread, and see if he is interested in going. I think we'll be doing this for some years and it would be beyond great if the two of you could join the hunt.
It's a tribute to Wilderness that so many of those who, like you, hunted there previously, would like to return.
I think the hunting is excellent there, but I'm pretty sure that in a group of hunters from the Fire, the best memories will be made around the real Campfire there.
That's the way it has worked for the three years we were at Carryonah, and I believe it will only get better.
Now,with just about a whole hunting season ahead of me, I have a lot of options. Come March, I'm climbing the walls needing a hunting fix.
I think a lot of us are in the same boat. Thus the planning now for March, 2012.
You are probably about a days drive to Wilderness, as are most of us. And as good as the hunting is, meeting Fire members, and building new friendships is even better.
And you do not have to choose between the #1 and the AR10. Bring 'em both and use them on alternate days.

Something for all of us to look forward to.

He looks at pic's on this site as well as others. He not only watches, but records hunting shows on the DVR box. We went hog hunting quite a few times this summer. Thought we were going to get one the last time we went. We went to the range last Saturday to sight in my new Remington 7600 Carbine 30-06 Spr. He brought his Ruger 10-22 with the Leupold 2-7x28mm Rimfire Scope he saved his money to get two years ago. My wife and I said we'd pay half so he saved his money. He went through 4 boxes of CCI Stingers that day.
I was having trouble with my 30-06. I made some changes Sunday. Today I picked him up from school and we went back to the range. Got my 30-06 figured out, gotta fine tune it a tad but it's getting there. He went through 3 more boxes of Stingers. He shoots out to 100 yards and is pretty good at that range, he has the correct hold over. He tried shooting the 200 yard target but it was a little to far lol. My wife and I are getting him a Marlin 336Y 30-30 Win. (short 12" LOP stock, 16.25" barrel) to go with his 10-22 and 870 Jr. model 20 ga. (12" LOP stock, 18.5" vent rib barrel). We're helping him start his collection early!
Our daughters used to be into shooting. Now they're 14 and 18 they have better things to do. I shot a deer with my 18 year old daughter when she was 8 or 9, she actually saw it before I did LOL. Our 14 year old will go shooting once in a while if she doesn't have anything else to do. Neither of our girls were into it like my son is. Same with the ATV's, they can take them or leave them. My son will ride the tires off them if we let him. That's understandable I guess. I hope to get all our ATV's up and running for next summer. Hopefully I'll be able to ride. It's been a long time since I swung a log over my 2000 Big Bear 400 4X4. It's my little tank. We'll see.
The deposit of $250 should be sent in to the Wilderness during the first week of January, with 24HCF written at the bottom of the check.
Stories about Les are always welcome and no one ever doubts the truthfulness of them. That would be because we know Les. Hope he joins us for the hunt.
The 45-70 should do some most sincere damage.
Non Fire members are most welcome, and it is one of the ways that hunters become members. Just PM the names to me so we can keep track of the number of hunters we have and so we don't over-subscribe.
I have tried most places in TN and Wilderness is my favorite . They let you hunt on your own and the guides will come pick up your hog when you let them know you have killed. I have never used a rifle, only bow and handguns. You will have a better choice of hogs if you are using a rifle since the hogs are very spooky and haul ass when you close the distant to 50 yards or closer. Bow and handgun is more of a Challenge. I like stalking so this my primary way to hunt them but they do have stands if you prefer. Most hogs are Russian and Razorbacks. Here are the photos from my last hunt in Feb 2011.
But who is the guy in short pants that you got to do the work for you?
Steve
Wish I could have found someone to do it but Moira finds I work for light wages. Feed me occasionally and keep my hop and barley count up and it gets done. Lots left to do but the shed (8'x24') is done and starting to get organized.
As I had mentioned earlier, I have no interest in shooting an exotic, but enjoyed the living daylights out of seeing them at the Wilderness. All in all, they made for a pretty interesting Boar hunt, which I thoroughly enjoyed.
Normal trapdoor level loads aren't really bad with it. Its a big shove, and you certainly feel it whack your palm even when held tight. I made the mistake of trying some of the LeverEvolution loads in it... The pistol handled them fine, I on the other hand didn't care for them. That was a 325gr FTX pushed to 2150fps spec'ed from a 16" barrel. Its quite violent when you touch one of those off. (This is the load Mudhen fired). I still have 4 rounds of those, and about zero desire to shoot them....
I think a nice hard cast 420grn WFN loaded to trapdoor levels would probably be pretty effective on a water buff.
Have 12 hunters signed up so far, which is pretty good for a hunt that is still six months away.
I do think we will have a Spring explosion when the late winter, early spring kicks in and we all need a reason to go out and shoot something, especially a wild boar.
But the most important part of these hunts has been the need, and joy, of getting together as a Campfire, and just having a helluva good time.
I shot a pig(a small one for eating) in the head as it and two buddies headed down a track. Another hunter, about 30 yds past me, shot at one of the other two, and strangely enough, missed. That hunter had not marked the path of the pig he shot at, but I had, and followed where it went for about 60 yards. No spoor or blood. So I returned to the pig I shot, and it was still moving, but not much. I put the muzzle of the rifle I was shooting( A Marlin 35Rem I bought from JB) near it's head to finish it off.
That is when George claimed I made a Mafia hit on the hog.
Must be a New York thing.
But George is great company, and hope he joins us again.
I hope you have a "stand" built in and get a bow to keep at your side. Take care of those pests!
I will be looking for some bow advice next year but I think they're safe this year (despite me pointing out the bambi-veal likeness of them to my wife )
For those that are flying in, is there a shuttle that will take them to the lodge? I just might be able to do a short hunt like this, would be a kick in the pants to take a boar with my bow.
We've always had folks, who drove to the lodges from home, willing to pick up and take folks back and forth to the airports, when necessary. You'd certainly be no exception.
You boys sure know how to have fun. Wish i coukd but my wife is due to have our 2nd child sometime that month. Maby next year it sure would be fun to try my super blackhawk out on a hog.
Last go round I just rented a vehicle at the airport and hooked up with FVA(Frank) and we drove to camp and back to airport on Sunday to fly home....be happy to shuttle any one flying in just let me know and will try to arrange flight times to coincide arriving and departing
Steve....this is getting filled fast. I'll lessen my count to me and my son and wait out a while for any additional possibilities.
Please let me know if you need reimbursement for monies/deposits you fronted to reserve or if I should forward directly to lodge. May I assume reservation is in your name?
You and Bobbie are in, and can't get out. Would not be the same without you. And Wilderness can handle 25 of us in one lodge. If it goes over that, I think we can get a second nearby lodge. So, ya'll come. And thanks for the offer of financial help, but it is all covered.
saddlering,
A deposit is not needed until the first week of January, so you have some wiggle room. Hope you can make it.
My pards at work still don't believe the "age count" of the kicked bottles we had lined up that first year. They're just "simple folk" like me used to drinking Makers Mark. Y'all spoiled that for me....

Gotta' check schedule, but a previous trip I had booked looks it may not happen. I'd love to meet some of the rogues listed above, so if it's not too late to allow me to be put down as a 'maybe', please do. This looks like a good one indeed!
Be great if you could make it Leighton. I'm up in Bedford Mass tomorrow but I get in late have and meetings at the mothership all day and fly home tues pm from Manchester.
Gotta see how work goes for the next couple months, but I got a model 99 .308 that wants to go. I'll let ya know around December, if I can swing it, I'm in.
Is there a couples discount? =====================
Sure! I'll pay 100 bucks if your lovely wife hunts with me!
take the deal, Mark. she'll appreciate you more after a day with Bob.
You drive a hard Bargin my friend! The problem is that I want her to actually see a pig in its natural environment. Although Bob can arguably be compared to a pig he would not be in his natural environment. I would hate to see the Guy get shot out of a mistaken identity for an invasive species!

I went directly to cell text after Steve tagged me with that one.
Put me down for a possible if ya still got room. Looks like works gonna be pretty good this winter and I can probably swing it...how much would it cost to bring the wife along. She wouldn't be hunting.

Tim - no sweat on the numbers at this point - it's a bit off and I'm sure there will be some shifting so you're on the list. Cost for a non-hunter is $275
We may soon have to make the reservation for their second lodge. Allen, should we send in deposits now?
I'm going to let Steve work the money and deposit after he gets back from bumming around chasing Antelope in Wyoming but I think we're good holding off on deposits until Jan.
I would like to be added to the list of confirmed for this hunt at Wilderness Lodge in Tennessee. My neighbor and fellow member Tom M told me about this hunt and I would really like to go. Please advise if there is anything else I need to do to get and keep a spot on this trip. Thank you, Ben C. member name bgcatty

7x57Steve will fill us in with the details of money and when to get deposits in after he's back from collecting his Antelope and Wyoming Whitetail and savaging the prairie dog population in a week or so. I suspect deposits and final list will be late Dec/early Jan
I'm going to look forward to shaking your hand,Tom...along with about 15 other new guys.
Steve is going to smile large when he sees the guest list. Going to make for a fantastic Fri/Sat of drinking, grilling and smoking fine cigars.....and bravado, lies, debauchery etc.
Off to camp shortly and back in time tomorrow to catchup on this (and watch the Ravens v Texans game) - Very pleased to see some of our friends from the the North getting aboard.
b) how hard it is to import rifles for such a hunt
If you have your heart set on bringing one, I have no idea. It would be extremely easy for one of us driving to throw in an extra rifle or two, though.
Not hard to bring a rifle Just declare it at the border and fill out paper work....least thats how it works when I have drive firearms across into Canada for hunts
Going into Canada from the US and back was (and I'm sure "is") painless. I would think that it would be just as simple for them coming south, but just don't know.
Good offers gentlemen, thankyou. Now get the time off work. I'll maybe use some of those airmiles for the flight and rent a car which will cut the time.
EvilTwin I was thinking 45/70 to bring so your offer is right in line, on seroids.
I don't know what the max is. Steve did all the homework but happy to put you on one list or another as I'm sure there will be some shifting and such prior.
Just chatted with Steve and he's on his way back having gotten both an Antelope and a 4x4 Mulie but alas the plague has whacked most of the PD's in area so a short trip.
He can take over list mgt when he's back. He's thinking we'll likely have to get the second lodge which is nothing but good news.
Just got back from Wyoming and have not yet unpacked.
Very impressed with the number of guys from the Fire, and their friends and relatives, who are planning on making the Boar Hunt.
I'm going to call the owner at Wilderness tonight and find out what the maximum number they can handle is. Will report back as soon as I get it. It would be great if we could fill up all three lodges.
Saw this on a bumper sticker in Wyoming.
WARNING Hunting and fishing stories are being told here.
Protective footwear is suggested.
We may need to keep that in mind for the Boar Hunt.
Just talked to the owner at the Wilderness. Here's the latest:
-They can handle 50 hunters and non-hunters in the three buildings they have.
-Deposits of $250 should be sent to the Wilderness by the first week of January, 2012. Please write 24HCF on the check so they know you are with us at the Campfire.
-The dates of the hunt are as follows: We arrive the afternoon of Wednesday, 14 March,2012. We hunt on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 15,16 and 17 March. We leave on Sunday morning, 18 March.
-I'm working with the owner to get some special deals for us. Will let you know if, and when that happens.
-I have a Ruger #1 in 38-55 and a Ruger #3 in 375 Winchester that are available for those who may have problems getting a rifle to the hunt. Our Canadian friends will have first crack at them because they may have the bigger problems. And it would be great to have some Canadians join us. The borrowers will have to pay for the ammo.
-I've been waiting for someone to notice that the last night we will be there is 17 March which just happens to be St.Patrick's Day. Oh Jeez!!
-The campfire pit which was at the planning stage when I was there is in the process of being built. I hope the hell they put a railing around it so that we don't lose Pat (or me).
The guys who have PM'd me to tell me they are committed have been added to the committed list. If there are any changes, please let me know.
Any questions, just ask. And check out the Wilderness web site to get a good idea of what we will have.

Is it safe to assume we can start sending checks now? OT is good but will be drying up next month when my newb gets out of the Academy. Better to pay now.....
I'll have plenty of extra room in the Tundra (less if Leighton can go and wants to ride with Jim and I but I don't think he has what it takes ) and I would gladly throw in an extra rifle or two.
I want to bring my boy but have conflicting thoughts as to having a six year old out of school for three days. Have to think on that one.
And to all, send the $ as soon as you can and start building points.
Had the same issue as you regarding school or hunting with both my sons and my grandsons. Both my sons and my grandsons have said that going hunting with their father or grand father was far more memorable and educational than school.
We only have them for a very few years, and exposing them to us, and other good people, does not get forgotten. And the memories, and lessons learned on what it takes to be a responsible and loving man never gets forgotten.
I've had two of my grandsons taken out of school to go hunting. And both of their anti-hunting mothers were most appreciative and impressed in the difference it made on their sons.
I agree with both of you. I guess I need to figure whether it'll be a "+1" and then send the check. Can't imagine a better group of reprobates to corrupt my kid.....and he's already met Jim .
So has anyone else shot any of the other exotics there, and is it worth the extra $$$$ ?
I see they have Bison there but shooting a one in Tennessee doesn't exactly feel right. I'd like to eventually get one, but I think I'd rather do it somewhere in the west...
Man! I'm gettin' JAZZED about this hunt, and the opportunity to meet some of you fellas. I know what most of you have already found out on hunts in the past; it's a lot more fun to get on the board and "talk" to people you've broken bread with, and shared some adult beverages and maybe a little fib or three. C'MONNNNN March!
All of the Bison 'hunts' that I've seen via You-tube and other home video were pretty much the same story. The hunter and a guide casually walked up to within 50 yards of this massive beast and shot it. Hardly any sport in that.
Gonna be neat, two sets of Father and sons going that I know of, who else is father and son, Paul and his son are gonna bring Dad, and i am gonna ride out with Pumpgun.

Gonna be neat, two sets of Father and sons going that I know of, who else is father and son, Paul and his son are gonna bring Dad, and i am gonna ride out with Pumpgun.
Les I am glad he is able to go..... Tell pumpgun to keep his window cracked!!!!!

My old man and myself are planning on going, he's bringing his wife who's never hunted before but wants to shoot a pig as well.
Timing is always great, last year it was at the same time as my Texas trip, this time it's St. Patrick weekend. GF's dad is coming down that week for a visit.
Can't believe you had time to do that on Raven's game day. I'd have figured you were tailgating somewhere in Tyson's or near the stadium by now.
Drove the 10 hours back from the farm in Ky yesterday instead of splitting it up and already planned on taking the day off. Hit the rifle range at 0800 this am for a last check before deer season for the .257 and 7-08 and then gym on the way home and now enjoying a little shop time cleaning up rifles and resisting the urge to check work e-mail. Plenty of time for that watching MNF.
The list says 23 and you say we have 29 coming. Does that mean we have 6 who would rather remain anonymous? Should we alert the media? I hope one of 'em is Cameron Diaz!
Well they're not exactly free...There is definitely a price to pay after eating one. You have one hour, at Lunker's. If you can't eat it $50 bucks. Nevertheless I'm sure the steak I ate will still weigh more than the pig Les will shoot this march
As you can see my "special" pig camo brings in the big ones
I'll be driving so if anyone needs a extra rifle in tow,I'll be happy to oblige. I'll have a 25.06,7.08 or a 338 Fed selection one could choose from. I'm really thinking about giving my 41 mag a go this next trip unless this place has axis 32 inches and above that tempts me.
After Pat's Texas trip a couple summers back, I'm really beginning to get into this axis deer hunting.
I feel like that Norman Freeman character in the Shawshank Redemption, "Red", after he's beeen parolled, finds the money, and is on the bus to see Andy. I haven't been this jazzed by anything outside of the bedroom in 20 years. I think most of it is the anticipation of getting to put some names to faces, and show Lester I can handle whatever he dishes out!
If my memory serves, and it normally does, I'm fairly certain I stuck with whiskey. In fairness, though, I'm not sure what I poured in whatever energy drink I had towards the end of the night. That was pre-cigar.
Think I'll stick to vintage(or at least interesting) firearms on the hogs, myself. I can admire a good knife but can't really see myself sticking a hog with one, even if some eager dogs are holding it for me.
And the last time I was at a hunting camp where whiskey flowed freely, the organizer wound up staggering around in 25 weather, clad only in boots and his tighty whiteys. The ladies present at the time were fairly mortified

I'll be gone for about 3-4 days. Am going to the wake and funeral of the father of my son-in-law in Chicoppee, Mass.
The doctors had said about 5 years ago that he had 2-4 days to live. Well he was a lot tougher than they gave him credit for. Had cancer, was a heavy smoker, etc, but a real good guy.
Neat rifle! You gonna put a recoil pad on it? Or is there one already there? I didn't look beyond the initial photos. I just like the 300 Savage.
Nah - original plate on it. Unless you count the skinny pads on Rugers, the only thing I have with a recoil pad is the 8mm Mag. I already have a 99 in .300, so I'm covered on dies. It may be interesting getting the sights sorted out on this 1920. It's already D&T for a side mount so at least I won't feel bad if I have to modify it again to mount a receiver sight - which is what I really want to put on it.
Don't take this as Gospel as I haven't talked to anybody. That said, I'm sure if you're willing to spend the cash they'll allow you too continue spilling blood.
Or for an additional fee could you get another one???
You can take as many animals as your check book will allow.
For any bow hunters coming, the year I was there were a few Aoudad and one Black Buck that would give any archery a hunter a challenge if one were to try and stalk them.
For those interested in the dates for this hunt, please check out my post on page 9 dated 20 October. It is one of 3 or 4 I posted that day.
Any questions, please let me know.
And I'm still working on getting a special rate for a second hog, along with finding out if Wilderness can freeze meat for shipping.
Steve
Steve,
If one were to shoot a large boar, can the meat be donated to a food bank, or a charity such as the one a hunter can donate venison to? A big old boar just isn't palatable in any form including sausage.

TN. does have a "hunters for the hungry" program. Check the TWRA website for the nearest processor to the Cookeville,TN. area. This is the nearest town of any size to where you'll be hunting.

Gunner,
If I'm fortunate enough to take a big old nasty boar I'll donate ALL the meat to you! Just send me your phone# in a PM, and I'll notify you IF I get one.

Thanks neighbor, but Lord willing, I'll be huntin' right along side You and all the rest of the worldly gentlemen on the pig hunt hit list, I'm lookin at this hunt as a vast learning experience for me
Just saw a special on wild hogs in America. That Wilderness Hunting Lodge should be paying US to shoot as many hogs as we can. The govt needs to put a bounty on them. Even with dogs, US hunters are not able to control the hog population. LE is relying on Night Scopes and fenced traps, but its still not enough. Theyre getting bigger, more aggressive, and even invading suburban areas. I wonder how the Wilderness Hunting Lodge controls the hog numbers. With hunters limited to one hog for a $675.00 ~ $695.00 fee, were not even going to make a dent in the problem. The affluent among us can purchase another hog, or other exotic game on the ranch; I'm not among the affluent. I can just barely make it there.
Not being a trapper, I'll take your word for it. We had cages set up on a friend's land in Texas. It was nothing to find 10 ~ 12 of 'em in the cage the next morning. The big ones would see you, and then run straight at you, slamming into the welded wire of the cage. They'd bounce off and make another run. In fact, they did that until you killed 'em. The only ones that didn't show extreme aggression were the little ones. They just ran around the cage enclosure in a bunch...until they were dispatched.

TN. has taken wild hogs off the game list on public & private property for a method to control them better. They've also outlawed transportation of them. Folks were moving them around to create private hunting areas.
I can't believe that folks are being charged that much when there's land owners in the same county & surrounding counties that'll let you hunt for free. I know the game preserves aren't going to let that be known, due to it being a business for them.
See an article on TWRA'a website how TWRA is dealing with the hogs in this state.
Texas never did have them on a game list; they were a giant PIA from the beginning. The ranchers and farmers in the county I worked in asked the Sheriff to instruct us to shoot any hog or coyote, day or night, and either leave it there or take it with us (In a patrol car - riiight). Those big ones root up holes that break tractor axels and livestock legs. There a blight on the land in Texas, yet, you find the same thing down there. Hog hunting leases have surpassed deer hunting leases. Texas is 98% fenced private property, and the ranchers and farmers are cashing in on people's desire to hunt hogs. The only ones worth eating are the small ones. Those big monsters smell so bad you'll clear a house out trying to cook the meat.
traps work for a while but the hogs learn real quick to avoid them. snares you place on their runs, their mostly nocturnal so they don't see the snare till its to late. i like to set them where they cross under fences or where their trails come out of real thick brush onto the sendero, tank or road.

They've created havoc here as well. They have a habit of ruining foodsouces that game animals such as deer & turkey and etc. need. Folks were catching them and relocating them to other areas to hunt. The birth rate of these hogs is so high, it doesn't take long for them to get out of control. A few years ago TWRA started issueing AR's to officers to shoot yotes and now hogs on sight.

Same for me but just wondering how much scratch was needed. The fellowship is what we are paying for. And I'm sure that when it's all said and done we will say that the time we had was worth alot more than what we did pay.
Plus we get to shoot a boar like this instead of the pink one's that a certain other on this forum likes to shoot....
(I heard music really plays like that in your head when the pigs show up! )

I could not agree more. Hell, I can shoot a hog 200 yards from my house. I'm paying the fee and driving the distance to meet guys I've been talking to, in some cases, for 10 years but have never met FTF. I'm a whole lot more excited to meet fellow Campfire members than I am to shoot a hog.

If you guys are lucky I hear you can watch Pat firewalk in the evenings!
I come from hog country. I won't miss this opportunity if I can help it.
Lt.,
How big do you let a boar get before he isn't worth cooking? When we trapped, and shot them, the ones we skinned, butchered and ate were the little ones.
Last year, I had some venison processed and had sausage made. The sorry so-and-so mixed in some old boar, and you couldn't even cook that in doors, much less eat it. It was gawd-awful.

If a boar is with sows, regardless of size, they will be rank. Boars that are alone, or with anther, typically taste okay, but are tough. You can tell right off the bat, from their smell.
I shot a boar at Wilderness that probably ran about 250. It was with another boar that was slightly smaller. They were lying down together(I figure they were Democrats) and I shot the larger one.
There was virtually no odor from my boar, either in the field, or after it was skinned and dressed in the locker plant.
As it turned out, there was another hunter there who was looking for more meat for the homeless, and I gave him my boar. He was glad to get it.
There is an old hunter's axiom. "If it smells good, it tastes good."
It's dinner for four nights. We get there on Wednesday afternoon and leave Sunday morning.
They will feed us for supper if we choose. Taking matters into our own(and Pat's) hands has always worked out. But at Caryonah we were there only for two nights.
And remember, the last night at the Wilderness is also St Paddy's day.
Steve...I'll take care of burgers and brats for Wednesday night so the grilling can be done around the erratic arrivals. I'm going to do Nashville on the front and back end with my kid and take in some music and nightlife; so, I'm flying down and will rent a vehicle.
Anyone who arrives around the Wednesday noonish time frame is welcome to jump aboard but I'll be making a store run along the way to camp,if not the night before in Nashville.
Airfare is just too good now for me to do the 16 hour RT,especially the hated ride back home.
PS...PM me if anyone wants to buy some of my "new" pig-in-heat body powder and hair gel.
Yes Sir, the pleasure will be all mine, and I'll be on my best behavior
Gunner
Just to shout out an FYI, any fire members coming up north to pick-up I-40E around Sallisaw Ok/ Ft Smith, AR, give me notice, we can ride together, or I can bring a little 30' enclosed trailer for rifles/gear and meat boxes.
Since you were sober,I'll assume you're one crazy SOB on top of it.
My son and I still talk about you in hunting camp.
He did use the knife. Must have catch dogs though to put out the real truth. One grabs an ear, one grabs the tail and holds the hog and kind of streches the hog out. Still have to get in there and stick the hogs heart.
Would be worth the trip to see someone chase down a hog without the dogs help.
Can you imagine telling a friend that you are going to spend 5 days with a guy you met on the internet who sells "new pig-in-heat body powder and hair gel"?
It would probably take some 'splaining.
But the great think about hunting in general, and the Fire particular, is that if it had not been for these two factors, there would have been places we never would have seen, and people we never would have met. And we would have been the diminished by the loss.
This is a VERY troublesome looking bunch. Could be considered an "Occupy Tennessee Movement."
Perhaps, a number of us should be on stand-by to evac those who will definitely require a Seal Team 6 extraction.
God help the great state of TN!.
Happy Thanksgiving!
David
I'm thinking that any of us who "insert" without SEAL Team 6 should "extract" themselves, without SEAL Team 6. Wouldn't want to needlessly endanger our Troops!
I figure the Bourbon sales in TN should jump significantly that week.
I spoke with Alan, the owner of Wilderness, and this is what we have worked out for additional options.
-A second hog that is either a Russian or weighs over 200 pounds will cost $475
-A second hog that is 200 pounds or less, and is not a Russian, will cost $250.
-Any hog that is within the holding area for Fallow deer will be $250. Apparently the hogs will eat the Fallow deer fawns.
-Meat held overnight can be frozen to ensure you get it home in good shape. But bring a cooler(s).
-Meat that is not wanted can be donated to families in need and to church groups. There is no formal program.
-The down payment, which is due the first week of January, should include that it is for the 24HCF along with your handle. It's a little tough to keep track of names when everyone has two of them. Hell, I have trouble with names when there is just one of them.
-We'll have a hunters/guides meeting the morning of the first day to clarify the ground rules, and answer any questions( like, do we have to weigh the second hogs before we shoot them to make sure they are under 200 pounds and how can I tell a Russian hog?).
I asked Allen to check this post for accuracy, and to add anything he thought would be helpful.
This hunt is growing beyond expectations. It will be great to meet our old buddies again, and to meet new ones.
This has come up in the past when we went to Caryonah. In a couple of cases, the person who put down the deposit traded places with someone who decided to go at the last minute. In another case, Caryonah allowed the deposit to carry over to the next year.
Because of the much larger group we have for 2012 at Wilderness, and because they are much more accommodating, I believe that you would just get your deposit back and they would hope that you could make it the following year.
I'll bring this up with Alan at Wilderness when I next talk to him. But I would be very surprised if they did not return your deposit.
One of the reasons for early starting of the process to hunt at the Wilderness was to give those who might have scheduling issues time to work them out.
Here's hoping you both can make the hunt. We'll leave a light on for you!
One of my favorite memories of Pat(and there are a lot of them) was after we had been standing around a hot fire in a cold rain at night, and Pat had been drinking brandy. While walking back to his room, he kept repeating "OMG- WTF-OMG-WTF-OMG-WTF".
Same trip Sean asked Steve if Trey was dead (when he quit snoring). Steve's reply was "I [bleep] hope so.". Funniest thing I ever heard.
Before I was put on a Bi-pap machine for Sleep Apnea I could have given Trey a run for his money as the loudest snorer. Now, I just put in ear plugs and plop ear muffs over that, and I can't hear even the most obnoxious snorer.
Hey I just saw this post...I've hunted at this lodge before and had a great time. I took a black hawaiian ram. One friend took a blackbuck and another took a Dall ram.
It's a family run establishment and the accomodations are pretty good.
Steve....Mike informed me last night he's some keynote speaker at some event regarding a shooting at a courthouse 100 years ago,or something like that. Mike travels the country speaking on courthouse security and this is one vent he can not reschedule or get out of.
He sends his regrets and his thanks for the inclusion.
Why don't you join us? We are getting a group discount and are staying there from Wednesday afternoon to Sunday morning.
See the first post of this thread for more info. Four other members of the Fire have hunted hogs their and they expressed their opinion of Wilderness.
Steve
Steve, thanks I can't make this trip but maybe next time. Being from Texas, I don't get to excited about hunting hogs, but the great thing about this place is that you can hunt quite a few different species and you can hunt as hard as you want. I was there on a four day hunt in 2008 and shot my ram the first morning. I was sorely tempted to take a fallow or axis deer as well.
Allen, the owner, is a good fellow and his wife is a good looking lady and sassy too. One of his brothers conveniently operates a taxidermy business for those that want to get their mounts done local and he does good work. I have a black hawaiian ram he did for me staring at me as I type this. Another brother is a guide and is by far the fastest with a knife that I've seen.
I read some of the comments from magnumdood/hunter1960 philosophizing about charging folks to shoot a hog. I'll tell you in most instances, hunters don't even put a dent in the wild hog population so ranchers might as well charge those of us that enjoy the sport of it. At Wilderness Lodge I'm not sure how many of the hogs are even born there on the property and how many are shipped in. The hilltop hunting area is high fenced and is not a huge piece of land...I think I remember 800 acres? Given the number of hunters they host each year, I suspect that some outside replenishment of the hog population is needed. I may be wrong though. But I do know that they import all the sheep/goat species as all the animals were male.
If you are only there to shoot one animal, my advice is to be patient. You will see plenty of animals and the 4-day hunt is more than long enough to look over a fair amount of the local wildlife. It's likely that some guys will end up taking more animals than initially planned because of the length of the hunt, and density and variety of animals. So if you are on a budget, be patient. And if you're not on a budget, you can get plenty of trigger time!
I look forward to hearing reports back and viewing photos from you all once the hunt is over!
Steve...As to Mike,it was the March 1912 shootings in the Carroll County Courthouse in Hillsville, Va.
Mike is a fantastic public spaeker and is in high demand for such things. Since he is a national consultant and speaker on courthouse security matters,he was a well sought after person for this keynote speaking engagement.
spent a hr and 1/2 this morning crawling through the brush with my 1911 tracking a hog my buddy shot with his 25-06. he said he hit it in the neck, lost the trail (couldn't find anymore blood) after about 75 yds.
You could ride with me. I plan to drive and anybody between SE Texas and there are welcome to ride.
If Roger doesn't go, you (or somebody else) could also catch a ride with me, as I'm coming out of Houston. Extended cab with cushy seats, so the passenger can recline & snooze to his content.
...need to figger out what sorta interesting smokepoles to take...
I am going to take my Model 94 30/30. The only thing I've shot with it so far is paper so it needs to be deflowered, so to speak. I might also bring along my National Match AR. What's everyone else bringing?
Assuming it shoots straight, a Savage 1920. The vintage scope for it is on the way to me. Also, probably the AR10 & its carbine upper, for if it rains.
Unless of course, I buy something else in the meantime.

Some will shoot inside the first two hours of the first day. Let me assure you you won't need to bring books or arrange sightseeing tours to fill the voids.
The comraderie and fun in camp is 95% of the enjoyment. A hog on the wall or in your freezer is simply a bonus. During our last trip,I counted no less than 1,143 lies and boasts just during happy hour.
PS....Happy hour runs from 5pm Thursday till Sunday morning!

Bob, please make sure LTPat has non-alcoholic Brandy-- Oh and give him a "good" Cigar.
Yes sir...isn't too much I wouldn't do for Pat. I can't offend him with a gift of non-alcoholic beverages though. The man cooks gourmet for us and I'd hate to put the screws to that benefit.

He'll appreciate that for sure.
Just think if KG and STX all are able to join, all cooking will be taken care of. Makes me think I'm not smart for not joining the group. Lots of good people and lots of fun to be had. 3 full days, hell that's what a motel cost daily plus your going to get to hunt.
Bob does not have to give Pat any non-alcoholic brandy because Pat steals my full power brandy. He then complains the next morning that I made him drink it.
And once again I'm a victim. And don't get no respect!!

No side arm? No 15" blade for close work?
I was just talking smokepoles. I didn't include the .480 Ruger, nor the katana
I recall Capstick telling a story of how he went wild boar hunting in Argentina, with a knife as encouraged by the locals. His moment comes, the dogs are grabbing the hog,and Capstick wades into the fight, first grabbing the pig's tail.
That was as far as he got. He was so frightened he never did anything except frantically hold the pig's tail, as it fought the dogs. He forgot all about actually stabbing it. After this went on a while the pig eventually broke loose and ran off. Capstick collects his wits, looks around, and his hosts are rolling on the ground laughing. After the dogs are collected and the boar finally killed, they give him the tail as a trophy
Sounds like a nice day. Up here from there, the dogs grab an ear and the tail/leg, they hold him for you so all you gotta do is stick him/her in the heart. Would love to watch Rockchucker stick one without the dogs. Spear may work. You will notice I said watch.

Yeah, like Rambo in First Blood! Tie your Buckmaster knife to a oak limb, climb a tree over the trail, then jump down and drive the knife somewhere into the hog. All we (the theater audience) heard was he death squeal.
My son is 23 and he's my "kid" and will be as long as I live. I refer to him by his name in front of his friends, but when he drops by for a visit his nickname from age 5 is what his mother and I call him.
Are there still spots open? Les has asked me if I want to drive form Colorado Springs to TN with him and another guy. It appears that there's a real chance of getting a genuine Russian boar and that imterests me.

hello KC i am the one driving. You are most welcome to join us. tom

The man ain't lying. I was fortunate enough to be TNC's guest in his digs on the PINS get-together, and I was certain that by night 2 my snoring would have had him throwing shoes and beer cans at me. Not a peep out of him.
To whomever may roll with TNC, in all seriousness, you couldn't have better company. Great guy.
Patrick, I take payment in Jack Daniels. But then you know that already.

Yep - Just tell Steve or I which list to put you on. I suspect some will drop and some will commit by next month when the deposits are due so all are welcome.

Many thanks for the endorsement. I must confess however, the reason why I didn't object to your snoring is you were actually in Wtxj's tent.
I normally like Makers Mark, but I'll see about Jack Daniels
If Roger doesn't go, you (or somebody else) could also catch a ride with me, as I'm coming out of Houston. Extended cab with cushy seats, so the passenger can recline & snooze to his content.

What a host I must be: or KG is getting old. Worked out just fine cause once I take to sleeping, not much wakes me up. Drinking doesn't help much either.

Ah, hell. I drink too much. But I knew that. Really.
Are there still spots open? Les has asked me if I want to drive form Colorado Springs to TN with him and another guy. It appears that there's a real chance of getting a genuine Russian boar and that imterests me.
KC
Yep - Just tell Steve or I which list to put you on. I suspect some will drop and some will commit by next month when the deposits are due so all are welcome. Allen
Lists?
What is the due date for deposits? Do we send them to Wilderness Lodge?
Deposits are due the first week of January, and should be sent to the Wilderness Lodge. Put 24HCF on the check and include your handle so we can keep track of who has sent in the deposits.
It's somewhat hard to tell, but it looks like about half of the hunters going on the Boar Hunt will be first- timers at a Campfire function. And I think that is a very good thing.
Looking forward to meeting the newbies, and re-connecting with the vets.
It's sad; I've been going to school since I quit my job at the Brazos County Sheriff's Office. This Boar Hunt has me more jazzed than anything since I quit in 1999 besides play time with my bride.
In some cases I'll get to meet and talk to people I've been "chatting" with for 10 years. I'm like a kid waiting for Christmas.
I could bring a pocket full of rocks to throw at the boars; I am so looking forward to the camaradrie of a group of like-minded MEN.
Anyone from Michigan going on the campfire Boar Hunt? See if we could carpool I have the 15th -17th off, now I have to try and get the 14th and 18th off work to go.
Been talking to some of the guys about getting you to the 2012 Boar Hunt. I suggested hand-cuffs, rope and chloroform. The guys said that I was being a wuss, and they suggested considerably more aggressive approaches.
They're Prius tires; he said to go in the fire it has to be bigger than a breadbox. He must be tying some tires from a real car to the top of his Prius to throw on the fire.
Uh oh. the New England branch of the Union of Concerned Scientists and League of Conservation Voters is about to descend upon your abode with their hybrid black helos. You'll never hear them coming.
I worked with a former Marine Corp pilot. He swore helicopters weren't really flying, they did it with mirrors. Than I asked him what we were seeing when a helicopter crashed; he said someone broke one of the mirrors.

That makes more sense that any of this "retreating blade" aerodynamics stuff I assure you!
Put me down as "definitely interested" but I have to see what the next month or two looks like for workload. If there is still an open spot come mid-Feb and I'm not buried and the "boss" gives her affirmative nod . . . sounds like it would be a hoot. I'll check with you later, if I decide yes and there's not a slot, well, I will be too late and I hope all have a great time.
Boys, so as not to hold a "maybe" spot, I'm officially backing out for this year. Africa, and funds spent on the house is going to make 2012 a rather lean year, hunting wise. However, make sure that you have an "official" Wilderness hunting thread/hero pics, when ya get back. See if Rick will pin it for a few weeks, so everybody can read it. Ya'll have fun now!
All,bought a new toy recently and was playin' on the computer looking up various links offering information on it and found one with some notes on my rifle and about Wilderness Lodge as well.
To whome and where do i send my deposit of $250 for the boar hunt that i signed up for way back when? Can you reply with a mailing address so that I can send the deposit by FedEx?
The hunt is arrive on 14 March and hunt 15/16/17 and leave the am in the 18th. The deposit is $250 and total cost is $675 and it goes to
Wilderness Hunting lodge
Alan Wilson 173 Norrod Lane Monterey, Tennessee 38574
Be sure and write 24hour Campfire Hunt in the memo section and if you have a roomate preference note that too and please give Steve a heads up on that as he's doing the sorting.
Out of curiosity, how many spouses are coming, and how many of them are not hunting.
- Don't know

Don't hold me to this, but I believe if you don't kill[or wound], which is highly unlikely, you only pay for your food and lodging, which is covered by the deposit.
OK deposit is all set and in, just a heads up for those who wish you may pay your deposit by credit card over the phone as thats what I did. Steve they said they spoke with you and gave you pricing should some one want to shoot a 2nd hog,do you have that info?
The $250 deposit is due this week. But as long as we have the room, and we do now, you can send in your deposit. Just let us know when you send the deposit in. The max the Wilderness can handle is 44.
Pugs periodically post the "commiteds" who will now be defined as those who sent in their deposits. The "possibles" will be those who told us that they would, or may attend, but no deposit yet.
Any questions, concerns or suggestions, please contact me.
Hating missing this one in particular, what with such a large and neat crowd of rogues--many of whom I really want to shake hands with--but I'm out, gang. Looks like Portugal. Mrs. KG with her grandma and two sisters during that time is going to take precedence. As her grandma is 81, this is very possibly the last international trip they'll get to do together. Fair is fair.

I'd be very surprised if there was any problem at all. Just the opposite has been the case during prior hunts. Speaking for myself, and I think for others, I have met guys who I would now consider to be life-long friends. And I have been the blessed with their friendship.
Those who have signed up all seem to be more interested in face to face meetings with people they have respected and appreciated through the Fire, but never met.
Of course all that changes if TRH or hunter 1960 shows up.(grins)
We will be staying at the Holiday Inn Express in Kodak/Sieversville Tenn, right on the Bass Pro Shop complex the evening of the 13th. It's near Knoxville so if anyone flies in on the 13th or early morning of the 14th,we'll be happy to pick you up and get you to camp.
Steve/Allen...once the final head count is in,I'll have enough burgers and brats with the rolls, condiments and produce to go along with them to feed the gang the night of the 7th.
I will call in my deposit today.
I'll have some cigars for the sophisticated as well as some grape Cubans for my buddy,Pat.
I'll bring a laptop and a single malt for Terry who did a great job of reporting the hunt shenanigans to those back home his last visit to Caryonah.
I'll bring a Bose SoundDock for IPOD if anyone is interested in having music for the evening festivities and for those who graciously spend much of their day at the BBQ pit.
Lastly,I'd really like to live vicariously through those of you who will be partying on my once most favorite drinking day of the year.
Seems like it will be another great gathering,Steve and Allen. Nice job setting it up.
RC, depending on how times work I'd be happy to grab you on the way through. You'll have to deal with the smell of Guinea sandwiches (ET's phrase and it fits!) and energy drinks, though.

Don't know how your coming, but N'ville Airport (BNA) is a 100mi's West of Monterey,TN. (Lodge) on I-40. Unless your coming down I-65 out of the Bluegrass, you won't be close to Music City.
FYI, Those coming from the West or North or South I-40, I-24, I-65 there's a BassPro in N'ville that's easily accessible, if you need anything hunting related.
Those coming from the East, there's a BassPro on I-40 East of Knoxville at the Sevierville/Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg exit. Easy access off of I-40.
Those coming South or North on I-75, there's a Dick's and others in Knoxville.
If you need other items, alcohol, food items, etc. Once you get on I-40E towards Monterey, Cookeville is the last town you'll pass that has a good selection of stores. Cookeville has a local gun/hunting/fishing store called "Cookeville Outdoors" if they haven't changed the name or sold out.
If your going West on I-40, Crossville is the last town that has much.
Monterey is a nice little place, but other then a couple a 24hr convenience stores, small grocery, not much. They did have a nice little diner called the "Cup & Saucer". There was a Bar-Be-Que place, but don't know if their still in business. The sidewalks roll up early in the evening.
If my opponent is any thing other than another man who wants to put me in my place, then it gets to be knocked out by 375 grains of copper at about 1900 fps.
That's good because my FIL boxed a kangaroo at a carnival in Blytheville Arkansas Purse was a $100... He hit that kangaroo so hard it would of knocked three men out... All the Kangaroo did was tilt its ears back, stare him in his face, leaned back on it's tail and kicked him straight through the ropes.
He thought he popped both lungs and broke all of his ribs.
With a pistol he might of had a different outcome!
I ain't playin' hero against a Kangaroo; I've seen plenty of examples of the power they have when they sit back on that tail and pound whatever is in front of them with those incredibly powerful legs. I'd have as much of a chance at knocking out a Kangaroo as I would outrunning a Cheetah in the 100 meter dash!
Had the 1920 Savage at the range today, trying some handloads. It's hard to shoot well as the stock has too much drop for a scope, but at one point I managed 3 in 9/16" at 100 yards. Waited a bit, and decided to try shooting two more into the same group and promptly yanked them both 2" high
It's also hard (at least for me) to switch back & forth between a 1920 Savage and an AR10
It is official, I cannot get the time off this year. If the hunt is the same weekend next year I will book vacation so I can make it. That time needs to be booked before the end of Sept so I will be bugging the organizers early next year.
I will keep reading and enjoy the weekend in abcentia.
7x57 Thanks. It sounds like too good a time to pass up and my wife wants me to go so all hurdles should be cleared for next spring. I'll see if my daughters will join me.

I would like to be in on 2013, I am new here and no way I could get to go this year due to work scheduling. I have been to wilderness before and we had a blast.
I was under the impression they had dogs. Site says they do....
George
OH, not going so I have not read the site. Good for you guys. Bayonet would work fine. Not real sure I would do that unless the dogs had some real contol over a hog.
Here's the "only be one" with my afternoon hunting partner,Mike762. I'm 6'1" and Mike has a few inches on me,I'm sure. This pic was taken moments before the rope snapped. If you look closely at the head of my pig,you can see where the rain has begun to wash away the blood that covered my pig after a classic double lung, heart shot, offhand,in the pouring rain, through brush, standing on the edge of a huge rock cliff, with one leg hanging over the edge.
And unless Mike pipes in,that's the story and I'm sticking to it.
Says that your story is true but they also added that there is a 4-H fairground near by that is over looked by a huge rock cliff and in 2009 the Dollar General in the same town sold out of Kiwi black shoe polish.....

I don't think it's shoe polish.
I think somewhere around there a dairyman is still wondering whatever happened to his lost Holstein yearling
I just called lodge to take care of business but the owner has to call me back as he's loading firewood. Please know that because of a interim employment position with some international jewish banking cartels,Bobby can not go on this hunt.
Chris Palmer, who joined us in Texas for the dove hunt would like to be substituted,if OK with you and Allen.
prolly an old, and a new .30 - something. Not sure what .30-somethings that might be as I have several good ones. Saw a Kimber Montana in .308 yesterday - very light handy rifle.
yes they have a gun range to check zero or sight in . They have a covered building to shoot from if raining, but you may need your own bags. No Internet access and very little cell phone service unless it has changed from last year.
Ok think I'm going to bring my sporterized Arisaka in 30-06. It has aircraft sights on it. Think it will give me a one up if them pigs decide to fly..... Starting to get a little geekerd! Only six weeks away! Woooo! Whooo!
We are getting close boys! So who else is flying in?
Hey Dan, PM rockchucker, he and I have discussed a pick up at Nashville airport, I'll be coming through and have room for you to if you dudes can mesh AT's.
Yeah Dan, set it up, no need to rent a car. even though you will be riding in a Dodge , oh yeah, if you guys are gonna bring a bunch of extra gear, i can tote a little 30' enclosed trailer.
Darn Terry, I was looking very much forward to meeting you. I wish you the best in taking care of the circumstances that are going to keep you at home.
Fluorescent "Blaze" Orange Requirements Hunters must wear on the upper portion of their body and head a minimum of 500-square inches of daylight fluorescent orange (blaze orange), visible front and back, while hunting big game except on archery-only and turkey hunts. (A hat and vest fulfills requirements.) Blaze orange camo is legal if it contains 500 square inches of fluorescent orange. In those areas where the archery-only deer season dates overlap with another big game gun season (i. e. bear or boar), archers are required to wear 500 square inches of daylight fluorescent orange (TCA-70-4-124).

Cold chambers at all times unless you are at your hunting location, and actually hunting.
Lack of basic safety procedures can make a time that is meant to be enjoyable, a nightmare.
I have no doubt that the guys from the Fire will be very safety conscious.
Steve
HUH?
I thought everybody jacked a round into the chamber as soon as they pulled thier firearm from the case, clicked the safety off (if you have one) and put thier finger on the trigger in case a hog wandered up near the lodge.

It's even quicker if you keep one chambered in the case!
No,my wife wants me to go and have fun. I am a very lucky man to have a Wife as good as mine. The really cool thing about my wife and children is that we all shoot though,I am the only hunter.
It is a definite,I will be going along on the Boar hunt. How exciting! I have already made a list of what I nee to bring and checked it twice.....hate to leave home and forget my weapons.
Been on the road for a couple weeks and haven't been following closely but I think here's the latest. Corrections welcome.

Hatari - bailed on us due to family commitments but is sending a batch home homemade Calvados via me for or health so we'll toast to his health.
Welcome home,Allen. I'm glad to see my deposit has been noted. I have called the owner 3 times with no answer and left a message with the guide to have owner call. So,I just sent a check for a grand. They must be hunt or work busy.

Chris Palmer is my 1 guest.
When does Steve get back?
I just assumed for deposit was there Bob. I got a note back from them with directions when they cashed my check. I think Steve will be back this week.
Boy, That's good to know about the 500sq. in. of blaze orange to hunt.....I was going to wear a brown pinstripe and oxfords.....just kidding. I really am glad to learn this.
Had a great visit with two old(89 and 92) hunting buddies. They still have all the qualities that made them great to hunt with, and the memories of our hunts were discussed in detail. I'm still hoping to hunt again with one of them.
Concerning hunter orange, I think it is a good and necessary approach for all who are in the field to wear it, regardless of whether firearm or bow hunting, or just taking a walk in the woods. A lack of safe hunting practices can mess up a really good time.
So: Cold chambers until actually hunting, and hunter orange.
I hate that I won't be able to make it. A family obligation came up during that spot on the calendar. Good luck to you guys and take lots of pictures for we unfortunates.

Steve
I was going to be wearing a large paper mache pig outfit as the ultimate pig camo. Should I just paint it completely orange or spray paint "PIG" in orange on the sides of it?
Ofcourse now finding out that Bob wants to track pigs down in the dark and is bringing some grape blunts makes me alittle leary of wearing it at all.... What do you suppose thats all about?
-They have a 100yd rifle range, with a bench, for sighting in.
-They also have three ponds with bass, blue gills and catfish, so you may want to bring some fishing gear. When I was there last Spring, the fish I saw being caught were not very big.
-We(Pat) will have the use of a pig roaster for our first night there and the last(St.Paddy's Day). And for other stuff if we want.
I hope I don't disappoint ya but being mid winter I'm not tan Dan right now....if it's a great disappointment I guess I could hit the tanning bed for a week before I come...
I have have treat for all of you in camp, IF you are man enough to handle it. I regret that my duties as the manager of a 10u Travel Baseball team will keep me away from the Killing Fields, but I trust you will do your duties like some kosher Pol Pot and slay hogs right and left.
I have forwarded your reward to Pugs, who will scrutinize its quality, and report back to me, if he lives.

Gents, This looks a bit scary and I will quality check it tonight but given the following background memo from Jeff I think I'll treat it like we did nuclear weapons and practice two-person integrity before I crack the seal!
Hatari Hootch Please enjoy Hatari Hootch 2012. This is a New World version of Calvados, that rustic drink ubiquitous to the Normandy region of northern France. Now before any of you get the idea that Calvados is some cordial for some uptight Parisian sissies in silk britches and a powered wigs, let me set the record straight.
Normandy was settled by the Vikings, not poodle loving sword swallowers. The Vikings were badass. They sailed to NW France, hopped out of the boat, and told the locals to piss off, they were moving in. Not wanting to confront dudes that wore wolf skins and had muskox horns on their heads, the King gave them their own Fiefdom and asked them leave the rest of France in peace.
Vikings, being smart fellows, married the best looking girls they could find and settled down under their King Rallo. You might know one of Rallo's decedents, William The Conqueror, who slapped down the snotty English brats in 1066 at Hastings and became King of England. Showing his intelligence, he kept the Fiefdom of Normandy for himself and his descendants, knowing that English food wasn't equal to what he was raised on. The pale skinned Celtic chicks probably didn't do much for him either.
However, I digress. Normandy is a region perfect for apples, pears, and other fruit trees. It didn't take much imagination to press ripe apples into cider, and eventually, they got around to distilling it, as they are known to do anything that has any alcohol. The distillate is known to fortify one's courage, put fire in the loins and lead in the pencil.
I was introduced to Calvados by my good Norman friend and Viking descendant, Gilbert Tarriere. I enjoyed many camps with Gilbert in both Africa and Europe. Gilbert and his Norman buddies are passionate hunters of sanglier (hogs to you peasants), and Chasse du Sanglier was an enjoyable event that encompassed all the great things of a man's life: a good gun, and good wench, and strong drink.
Norman hunters do things right. They arise at a civilized hour for a big country breakfast, a shot of Calvados to ward off the cold, and take to the woods. Hogs are driven with dogs, by hunters on foot, and hunted from high shooting stands. It is typical to hunt the morning, have a extravagant field lunch of soup, fresh bread, rillette, pat, sausages, and fromage (cheese). After a siesta, back to the Chasse!
Meanwhile, back at the camp cottage, the lusty wenches would be rustling up the grub for the evening, and setting the table and living room up for the festivities. The successful hunters would gut and butcher the hogs, get the fire going, and start roasting a gigot (shoulder) as well as cooking up all the unmentionable organ meats we tend to bypass in America (too bad, good stuff).
Calvados is passed around before, during, and after the meal. It is not babied like brandy, but sipped, swirled, and quaffed with relish. It is not for effete pansies in loafers, but rather hearty men with hair on their ass and a broad sword on their belt. Food is served in proportions that would impress King Rallo himself, and it is ones duty to gorge. Calvados helps there in the form of the le Trou Norman - the Norman Hole- which is a shot of Calvados taken between courses to stimulate the appetite. Some of the best I tasted was made "right down on the farm", and you bet I got the recipe.
The night ends (if you play your cards right) cuddled up with your favorite buxom wench, and a handful of pain killers for the hangover the next day.
Hatari Hootch is made in this tradition. Distilled from fermented apples and pears, aged in oak (however briefly)and bottled exclusively for the 24HCF Hogfest. I want all you intrepid hunters with Vikings in your soul and hair on your ass to grab glass and enjoy. Neat or on the rocks, it matters not. Sip it, swirl a bit around in your mouth, and deliberate on the taste sensations you get. Some you may find:
Apples Pear Vanilla Carmel Rum-like qualities butterscotch almond
You might like in coffee. I've never mixed it with anything else.
Best Wishes to all, wish I could be there with you this time.

Think we will have some falling into the fire again now for sure!!!
Sounds ta me the actual hog huntin will be at the bottom of the itinerary
Well, it depends on the availability of suitable wenches. No wenches - means more hunting, drinking, and lying, as opposed to hunting, drinking and laying.
to bad us residents cant shoot a hog on site seeing as how they breed like wildfire and the ones running paid hunts are the ones responsible for bringing hogs into the state in the 1st place
thanks twrc and twra..............................................
Shaking in my damn boots. How in the hell do you know one of us isn't the popo. You don't, Ya'll would shat your pants if we showed up. Oh well have fun shooting pigs out of a cage, already wasted my money there once.

It was a [bleep] joke.....realax. I doubt any of you fellas would have me, let alone us, schitting pants.

Norman survival kit. Drink all the Calvados, and then when we find you unconscious, we can mash up the power bars and feed you through with the syringe.
I expect a tasting report pronto...
(That's what I get for grabbing a box here at the office. The power bars were suppose to be my lunch today dammit! Note - no needles with the syringes. I don't know who you hang out with .)

I think we best ration the Hooch given to the cooks. No telling what sorta spices would wind up in play.
Knew one guy once who owned a spice company and was a hot sauce connoissueur. He got lit and started cooking one night in camp, throwing all manner of hot sauce in the chili. The rest of us passed on dinner. Most of the next morning, the cook and the one guy who ate his cooking had the chits on top of hangovers.
I don't drink so bars are out, but if you guys are in the area and don't want to be around the lodge or are not feeling welcome there, I'd be up for some conversation over some pizza or burger nearby, one of the days I'm down there. Up to you..... I would commit a couple hours to do so. Not ever ashamed of meeting a few new people......
After a great deal of thought about the choice of weapon for the hunt,I decided to leave the .444 guide gun at home. It is a proven stopper and has performed well. However,I will use my 1954 vintage Winchester mod.94, in .32 win. spl.. I am not a purist, just want to give this rifle the credit it deserves.....It's a personal thing. The second choice is an 870/rifled barrel and optics. Now this should be interesting!
Well with some in our group I figure I should cover both sides of the plate...I did get pretty drunk that night but I can definitaly say there was no dark sausage there

That's a weird looking banjo you're holding in your avatar!
Not a banjo. That's a steel trident on the end of a broomstick, and I'm staring at the large fish scales impaled on the prongs. Buddy had a flooded field invaded by large carp he wanted rid of. I also used a rake and a pitchfork. The largest of them were in the 30 pound range. Good times.
All, Heading off to camp of the weekend shortly but I thought it would be useful to post the two documents I have from Wilderness as it has maps, GPS data and the regs and it seems some didn't get these.

Oops. You were referring to the tuna banjo. Apologies. I must have just changed my avatar over from my Neptune impression...
Ok, getting ready to correlate plans with the guy's who are riding with me. What time can we show up on the 14th? And what accomodations are provided in the sleeping quarters(blankets, pillows, sheets?)or do we have to byo?
And how are they set up? Group room or a bunch of little tiny rooms? bunks? And how many to a room?
Type of clothing for the region, open woods or a modest ammount of briars on property?
So far I've got a orange hat and vest, a roll of blue tape, and a gas mask packed.
Really just trying to make this trip as efficient as possible....
1 ear plugs and ear muffs ( i hear some of these guys snore ) 2 there home page states they supply linens and towels 3 camera and xtra batteries 4 bail bond $$$ 5 fire extinguster ( i hear some get close to the fire pit ) 6 tall boots ( cuz the bullschit will be deep )
The Putnum Co. Sheriff & General Sessions Court Judge doesn't grant bond to out of towners. It's called hold without bond, for up to ten days before arraignment. You'll be amazed at how many ways they can fix bologna during that period.
I had decided. I didn't really think about the fact that our stay overlapped St. Patrick's Day. Gramps has been gone a couple years now, and I think it might be fitting if I shot something in the face with his rifle on his birthday. That should provide any extra excuse I need to celebrate my heritage later on.
I have to call my brother as I think he hunted it during November...
you boys are going to have to do it without me this year.....I have a work problem that just won't go away, and an uncooperative judge that won't move it. maybe next year. kill some for me and Grace.

Oh no!!! You know it takes at least 1 lawyer for every 3 cops to raise their status. There may be at least 5 badges there. That's a strong overload you're placing on me,man. I best man up for the challenge.
I'll have a few of these new cigars I bought forwarded to you, anyways. We'll light one up Saturday night at the bonfire, you in your backyard or cigar joint, and I'll ring you so you can chat with the boys. Afterwards,I'll let you guess as to who almost fell into the fire.
Afterwards,I'll let you guess as to who almost fell into the fire.
I can tell you who DID fall into the fire last year. A couple of us "almost" fell in trying to extricate him. I won't be there to see a repeat performance, but I'm sure we'll hear about it, if it does happen again.
Though I'm sure it's still going to be a hell of a time, I'm going to sorely miss the presence of many not attending this year....Terry, Mike and Steve to name just a few.
Bottom line, we kinda need Steve and Mike's presence to boost the respectability level.......(not that Terry isn't, but he's too surly to put in that group).

I could offer to loan you a .270, if that would help.
I just dropped off some venison to my German butch so we will have appox. 10 lbs of slim jims peperoni sticks to snack on...I'll also have a bunch of cigars for those that wish to partake in a fine smoke...
He's looking forward to hanging with you again as well,Dan. The cigars I'm bringing down were delivered today. I asked Chris what he was shooting and he said load 'em all up and I'll decide when we get there.
I'll pick up potatoe salad and chips if folks are not able to set aside some time to pick up anything.
I think the place has 4 bow stands,Dan unless you wanted to go the still hunt route. You can carry my 44 Mountain Gun,if you do. Chris wants a stand so he doesn't have to carry a keg with him walking hills.
I may do a day's worth of bowhunting myself. I'm definitiely using something different.
Hey isaak let me know what I can being.I'll be driving from Maryland and have plenty of room.If anyone would like to meetup to share a ride(Pugs? or anyone from the north east)let me know.I know 7X57 Steve is going early if he makes it home any time soon,I just left him at at a bar in Frederick that had 29 cent beers for leap day,I'm going back after a nap.:) Joe
A butcher friend of me and Chris' is grinding up top sirloin and packing it with cheddar cheese and real bacon bits for 30 delicious burgers. He will also be giving us a assortment of sausages and brats. He'll pack it all up for us and after a quick stop by a local grocery store to fill the gaps,we'll not starve our first night.
Steve,Allen and Pat are the bosses for each night thereafter. Trust me,though...no one starves and, most often, folks gain weight at these affairs.
Bring your own drinks you like, coolers, maybe some chairs if you're driving and you're own preferred snack foods to tie you over for late, late night and hunting.
I'll stop by Costco and get the gallon containers of Alleve, Pepto and a mix of fine, grape and bubble-gum stogies!
Should any of you gents that are flying need anything,I'll be staying in Kodak my first night at the ?? hotel right next to Bass Pro Shops and there are plenty of stores from there and camp.Give me a ring and I will do my best to accommodate any "REASONABLE" request.
Safe travels to all. My cell number is 703.200.1464.

I could use a pair of Swarovski bino's is that reasonable?

You're certainly worthy of borrowing mine, even for Africa. My PH loved that glass but I'm savvy to that guide gift suggestion gig and wouldn't have anything of it. If you borrow mine, you can't either,Dan.
Between you and Steve,I'm sure Keith was quite happy. Watching Pat do what he does to a 12 dollar cigar will make one cry...from laughing so hard. Never saw anyone shotgun a cigar before. Wonder where he learned that technique!
Sounds like a lot of fun guys. You'll be about two hours east of home for me, and in my opinion, one of the prettiest places on earth. Maybe one of these days I can join up with you for a hunt in the area. I'll be watching for the reports, and everyone have a good time and be safe. rick
I had talked to Steve about possibly setting up a carppool, but I'm going to be going to NY from VT (training) instead of across Brattleboro like I normally would.
If taking anything on the plane is going to be a PIA for you, let me know and I'm sure I can find a day to roll down your way and make arrangements to get what needs getting.
Steve,Allen and Pat are the bosses for each night thereafter.
Since you've got the first night pretty well dialled, maybe Steve, Allen or Pat can give a shout as to anything I can contribute on the drive from Indiana.
Teri and I are sure going to miss not seeing all the good folks that will attend this shindig but prior longstanding commitments have kept us out of this one. We hope you guys have a great time!
Well Dana...since you and Teri have been two of everyone's favorites at these events, your absences will be noticed. I still talk about your dove triple!
I'm going to contribute two pigs I plan to shoot. One will be for Saturday evening, the last evening we will be there, and it is also St. Patrick's day.
The other pig will be for either Thursday or Friday evening.
I'm also going to bring some summer sausage made from antelope and mule deer and cheddar cheese.
Please feel free to bring other eatables(and drinkables).
The guides have been invited to the Saturday grill, and will probably be there some other evenings too.
The Wilderness is providing a fire box(I have no idea what that is) for cooking the pigs over a fire.
Pat, bless his generous soul, is going to do the grilling, as usual.
The only real problem that I can see, is that we are very liable to be accused of having too much fun.
Well gents, due to some budgetary constraints and new fiscal concerns in my family (ie. baby on the way!), my wife and I will be withdrawing from this rondevous.
Sucks...
We both were REALLY looking forward to making this....
Thanks bud! This little one is kicking the crap out of my wife! She's been sick as can be. I tell her that since it's so demanding that it must be a girl
Steve/Allen...Mike just stopped by my office and said his speech obligation is now for the Tuesday before the hunt because of a rescheduling. He will be speaking in southern Va and would like to rejoin the group,if possible.
Please let me know if Mike can now fill one of the remaining slots. Thanks Steve/Allen.
It hasn't gotten to that point yet. We're only 9 weeks into this. It's just all the hormonal restructuring that is going on, is rougher for her this time around than it was for the first kid.
Last ultrasound, and first time hearing the heartbeat....
Hey Bob, don't know if you're aware but there's some very serious T storms and tornadoes heading your way. It just went through my neck of the woods (the second one), and is running through East Nashville, Lebanon, and Mt Juliet, and looks to be pushing East at a rapid clip. Be alert!
Anyone looking to carpool from the airport? I will arrive Nashville via Southwest Airlines on March 14th,10:44 A.M.. If anyone is interested please contact me. Thanks.
No problem PM me your flght details and I'll wait for you to arrive....My departing flight is Sunday 10:00AM so will head back to airport 7:00 AMish Sunday morning
For purposes of my butcher order for the first night of grilling,I'd appreciate it if I could get as near a final head count,as possible, also including,if you can, the camp guides/owners who could join us,as well.
My butcher dude asked for the benefit of at least 5 days notice,if possible.
Thanks Steve/Allen.
Pat...if there's anything you wish added to the order, just ask and it will be done, amigo. Did the good doctor post a "light" field report somewhere that I may have missed?

Also Allen, Mike V. is now able to make it per a few posts above and because of some professional obligations,Magnumdood could very well have to bail for this hunt,as well.
Well, you have a Lucky but tough row to hoe now HAJ. I was looking forward to meeting you and yer Hunney, but hopefully there will be a second chance sometime. (I say tough becuz pregnant wimmins can drive a guy absolutely BONKERS!!)
If the new hunters wouldn't mind, please post your first names so I can begin practicing some memory recall. It took me near half a day and some guidance from Steve NO to finally figure out who was Mike762 and I had already met him in my first 30 minutes there.
Any food stuffs or pitch-in items I need to pitch-in on?
For those that have hunted there before, I understand the area is up/down...any creeks that will need to be crossed? I understand that some run-off's will vary based on recent rainfall. This is directed at footwear....are rubber boots needed for crossing creeks?
Earlier someone mentioned atv's. I can bring one if needed to help shuttle folks around..if not I'll be happy to leave it at home.
Anyone from the Chattanooga, TN, NW GA, NE AL area is welcome to catch a ride with me.
We'll have four campfires at the Wilderness for about 35 people, so please plan accordingly for meat, veggies, munchies, paper plates and plastic forks and spoons, paper towels, beer, wine, brandy, bourbon, scotch, cigars, whoopie cushions, etc.
I won't be there. My nephew is getting married on St. Patty's Day and all the festivities (rehearsal dinner etc.) are happening the Friday before. I'll be down in JAX for most of that week. Hope to see you next year.

Keep an eye to the West & SW, this time of year, pop up thunder storms that start in the bootheel of MO. or over in AR. have a way of spawning up into big thunderstorms which produce tornadoes and moving quickly into the state. The higher the temps. this time of year the better the chance for the storms.
Last Fridays thunderstorms all produced tornado or high wind damage in Putnam Co. where you all will be staying and in the surrounding counties of Dekalb, Cumberland, Overton, which all directly border Putnam.

I was just trying to give some info. We deal with thunder storms/tornadoes quite often in the mid state & Cumberland Plateau in the Spring, probably more then NY.
The guides all have ATVs that will get you to your hunting spot or you can walk. I did both, and liked the walk much better. I could walk and still hunt simultaneously. The country is attractive, lots of big trees and small but constant hills.
What I especially enjoyed seeing were the exotic animals there. I have no interest in shooting one, but to my surprise, I enjoyed the hell out of seeing them.
A guide in an ATV is very handy though, when it comes time to get your hog out of the woods.
But, if a few of you brought ATVs, it would probably be a big help, if only because of the number of hunters we will have.
Those that haven't driven it before, watch your speed on I-40 EB after coming into TN. I-40 EB & WB, is heavily worked by both THP & Judicial Drug Taskforces. Speeding & out of state plates will get you looked at. The philosophy on I-40 is drugs EB, cash WB. Watch your speed on I-40 through N'ville also, it goes from 70 to 55 once you get into town, Metro N'ville runs unmarked units using laser radar.
Yep, will be my pleasure to give our Grillmeister Pat a ride. ==================
Be very alert to Pat's "let's stop here for a minute" comments.
no problem.
I'm planning to bring a 7mm-08 Montana in event of rain, and will probably bring a .308 A-bolt for a loaner. I'm on the fence about bringing the 1920 Savage, or a #1 of one flavor or another. Prolly a couple of interesting pistol, just for S&G.
Hey...what's wrong with a couple of pit stops? Unfortunately, the halfway point is about Alabama and trust me...you don't want to make any of the kind of stops to which I believe you are referring.

Alabama?? You must be coming up I-65 NB, there's a couple of those places North of Huntsville on I-65 at the TN/AL state line. If on I-65NB take SR/I-840 just S. of Franklin, TN. It will by-pass N'ville and bring you out on I-40 EB, about an hour or less from Monterey.
Bringing my S&W 41 mag which has me at 2inches high, dead on at 50 yds. I'll bring my 7.08 and my new 25.06 for fun,and for loaner,if anyone has a need.
I'll carry my 44 mtn gun just in case I have a run in with another 400 pound pinko pig.
There's gonna be over 7000lbs of pork come end of next weekend
that's like 10 eastern tennessee women right?
Actually they are a lot like wild hogs..Most won't weigh quite as much as you would guess. It would push most to be 350# and occasionally a 450 pounder will be reported.

They're in Rochester and they carry the 41Mag ammo I use. I'll call them and just have them send it to the lodge. Too late for me to get it here before I roll south.
Just bought myself a Model 6904 Smith "Pig Slayer". Thinking I'll find me a big one and taunt it to a charge and give it one to the forehead about 15 or so feet away.... That is where you shoot a hog isn't it?
If any of you gentlemen stop at any ammo places along your travels and you come across some Winchester Supreme 41 Remington Magnum 240 Grain Platinum Tip Hollow Points, please grab two boxes for me. I'll either give you cash at camp or you can call me on cell and I'll pay by debit or cc while you're there.
I have 4 left, which is enough for 4 big boars,of course, but just in case the sun is in my eyes,I could use the extra.
Thanks in advance. I can't get them to me before the 17th. If you find them by a store that can get them shipped to me by Monday,I'll take care of it that way.
If you got it from Bob it might not be correct...he kept sending text messages to a number he thought was mine..it was actually a cell number in Maine.

It was much worse than text messages. I keep waiting for the Feds to knock on my door.
Sure enough will and I thank you. I'll square with you in camp. As a aside,if you're still going to Cabelas for yourself,I have a 20 bucks off for $150 purchases and a $50 off for 500 dollar purchases. Happy to scan and email it to you if you like.

I've shot the S&W 500...once. Bring that Ruger480 though,if you have room. I've not seen it and would like to have a look at it and fire off a round,if ok by you.
I love my S&W 44 mag mtn. gun but that is one loud, obnoxious little revolver when just pulling the sight-in trigger.
I'll be leaving for the Wilderness on Tuesday morning and arrive there that afternoon. I want to check things out to make sure we are good to go on Wednesday when everyone arrives.
If you need to reach me from Tuesday on, my cell # is 301-509-3905. Cell phone service in that area is spotty at best. I do know that it works well if you stand right in front of the lodge where we are going to stay. So I'll go by there periodically to check for messages.
Before Tuesday, you can just PM me or Pugs or Bob.
Remember to bring your blaze orange stuff, and don't forget the blue tape.
Serviced the old big Dodge yesterday, time is drawing very near Gents I'm predicting an epic slaughter, and more fun than the local jurisdiction allows

funny today at the range I saw a guy shooting with pink ear muffs. I was tempted to ask him why he was using his daughter's stuff, but he was bigger than me
well, at least I now have three rifles ready, despite the rain...
I will mention for any of you needing last minute gear or such...at about exit 290 off of I-40 there is a medium sized gun shop sporting goods store...fairly well stocked. I stop by just to visit and snoop when I can. I believe the name is Outdoor junction?
Looking forward to all the pics of dead piggies, rick
The .338 Federal Hawkeye is confirmed and still dead-nuts. I changed loads in the SBL and need to tweak it again. I need to remember to shoot the ghost-rings before the scoped rifle next time to avoid getting aggravated....
The .338 Federal Hawkeye is confirmed and still dead-nuts.
What are you shooting through the Fed? Bringing my Montana in 338 Fed. Will shoot 185 TTSXs. Wanted to shoot some 210 Partitions but haven't been able to sight it in, so sticking with what I have.
Just picked up a couple cases of mixed Saranac, Sierra Nevada and New Belgium beers. I figured if it wasn't a dry county they'ed have both kind of beer, Bud and Bud light so best prepare. Also will throw in a couple bottles of aged goodness just in case someone gets bitten by a snake.
.257 Bob and 7-08 are dead on at 100 and I'll likely throw the Copper .22 and a brick or so in.
I'm going to hit the road Tuesday pm and get 4 hours or so under my belt of the 11-ish it'll take me. I'll have to stuff the cooler in the back seat of the car as I see no need for any off-road work and it gets better mileage and is tons more comfortable at speed.
I'll be cookin' at night, so any requests besides bbq pig (and boudin, of course)? I'm thinkin' maybe some smothered pork or gumbo? Bob and Chris have tightened us up with some gourmet burgers for Wednesday night...
Two years ago,I shot a rusian Boar With a .444 Marlin and when he got hit, the only move he made was from the impact. Dang thing went dead on it's hooves!
I'm also debating throwing in my 1911 in case anybody decides to run with dogs. I'm just not sure if I trust the Rangers for hog-stoppers.
George
Me running with dogs would likely result in either frustrated dogs, or maybe the boar caught rolling on his back helpless with laughter. But I can offer to loan the .480, for anyone who wants a bigger pistol for backup. There are also .357 &.44 N-frame S&W's that could attend, but I've only factory ammo for them, no hardcast.
I was thinking of bringing my big slow cooker, and also some venison, and stew fixin's.
Hunting with the dogs was a great time. Of course I like dogs better than people as a rule (present company excluded of course ). We'll see if anyone is up to it with me. Plenty of time.....

I took my boar a couple of years back with my 1911 Springfield using the Hornady 230 gr XTP at around 35 yards and it dropped in it tracks. Shot behind the shoulder. It was taken on Wilderness.

NHK9, If You have an all steel 1911, I have some FMJ hardball runnin at around 1000 fps, thats what Ill have in mine, and Your more than welcome to a coupla mags full
Out of respect,I'll not write the names of the serial snorers but I'd be remiss in not saying ear plugs will become very expensive in camp if not brought beforehand.
If I wasn't a generous guy,I could have made over 100 bucks with a auction.
We will have full use of a kitchen of our own which is in the lodge where we will be staying. Pat had asked me about it because he has plans for a lot more than just roast hog. And if you have eaten Pat's food in the past, you will shout hallelujah!!
Weather looks pretty good, with some chance of occasional rain.
And I do think we are liable to be accused of having too much fun.
See you on Wednesday. Call on my cell if you need to reach me. 301-509-3905
I'm set save for my 10am Costco run. Smith Mtn Lake by 4 to pick up his Honor and we'll be at the Holiday Inn Express next door to Bass Pro Shops in Kodak by 10pm,or so.
Next morning will have me eating my once a year grease plate at Waffle House, after a quick hour inside BPS, and then onward to camp. I think camp is about 90 miles from there but I'll have to double check on that. If anyone needs anything from BPS,call or text me on cell before 10am Wed. and I'll do my best to grab it for you.
Pat...since I'm your kitchen prep boy and gopher,if you need anything at all from Costco, please let me know.
I'll bring sparklers, cookies and milk for the new guys.
Hunting gear, rifles potent potables staged in garage. Car's tire pressure adjusted from the 20 degrees setting to the 70 today. Bag of clothes to go.
Work tomorrow and off about 1600 or until I start twitching badly. Realized my hunting rain gear is at camp so I have to swing by WV on the way down 81 and I'll make it some way down there tomorrow night and roll into camp when I get there.
On mobile at 443-695-1119 on the trip if someone needs something.
Explain to me why I can live, easily, for nine days in the White Mountains or a week during deer season from a pack but when I know I have my truck and an actual roof over my head I have to pack more schit?
HOLY CRAP........just got back in, theres about 10 LEO's and 2 ambulances outside, they wanna land a chopper in the pasture, had to point out the overhead lines, somebody is FUBAR.
300 Win. Mag - check .454 Cassul Super Redhawk - check 30-30 lever - Check Nuts - check Clothes - check check - check tin foil pig hat - check Orange - check Fishing pole - Check (do we need to buy a licence?) Passengers......... um...... I'll be back.....
Any of you that go blink after this weekend, it will not be from my booze. It will probably be from doing that which your mother and priest told you would make you blind!
Cool, wondering if Dad and Paul got that U-joint changed out yet, guess they had one go bad just about the time they got there. Hope all are getting what they want.
I was wondering if there were any dead piggies myself. We're having pretty rough storms right now in Middle Tennesse, but should be after dark before they get there if they go that way. Rick
Be glad to hear all the stories[and pics] when the boys get home. None of my business, but I hope they start a new thread with stories and pics. This thread is awfully long, and a new one[that's a sticky] would be great. JMHO.
I will say Dad found out a 41 mag with 250 gr slugs will not penetrate a boars skull between the eyes at about 10 feet. Don't want to steal all of Greenhornet's thunder.
got a text from Bob...he got a nice Russian with a mane.
he sounded a little beat down.....apparently R'chucker and NHK9 somehow forced him to play the pig in a road show adaptation of Deliverance last night.....he didn't want to talk about the details but I'm sure the rest of them will.
Well, I'm home and had a great time, but will have to post more later as I can use some sleep. Everything is unloaded except the pork which is iced down. Our rental vehicle made grinding noises all the way home and in one small town in KY another Chevy pulled up at a stop light, and asked us if we knew that our truck was making an awful noise! Tom
I will post photos today in a separate thread from the hunt. Great hunt best time i have had in a hunting camp in a long time. Want to thank Pat for the time he took to cook the best meals i have had in a hunting camp in a long while . You just couldn't hand pick a better bunch of guys to share a hunting camp with . Best hunt i have had in a long while. Gunner500 is the only one who didn't bring enough guns to hunt with , he will have to try harder the next time we have a hunt. Another thanks to 7x57 Steve for putting a lot of his time into this hunt.
At Tennessee airport ready to hop my flight home...every one had a great time with a great group of guys! Pat got a little rowdy Saturday and he wanted to go a round with Gunner but I persuaded him to go to bed and just dream about it...I'll post more and some pictures later
I got in late last night so I didn't stay for the last fire.I hope you didn't have too much fun. I had a blast!Lots of great guys, stories, food and firearm knowledge. Joe
Some of us found the entire experience to be quite relaxing!
Just got home. Got to find room in the freezer, and take care of the critters.
Hell of a great time. Post more later.
Big, big thank-you up front to Steve, Bob, and Iron Chef Pat for their hard work and warm friendship.
BTW, I accidentally made off with someone's bottle of Knob Creek, thinking it was Ben's. Whoever's missing one, I owed you another bottle. (It's good.)
I hope that everyone made it home, safe and sound. A special thanks to 7x57steve,Bob and David .what a blast we had! I had a rare opportunity to be with men who have real values and their Country at heart-besides damn good hunters. I would be proud to be with you -all next year.
What a great group and a great time. To anyone I missed on the way out (Hey Portsider!) - thanks for the laughs and company, and +1 what Portsider said above. To anyone still on the road/air, safe travels and look forward to pics.
p.s. Some of these guys you suspect are goofballs, accomplished goofballs, and professional goofballs? CONFIRMED! And all great guys.
I dragged anudder one completely over to da Dark Side Gunner is now foamin' at de mouf to get on wid da paper patched bullets! I killed a pretty bug sow with the 44/90. Northern Dave, note that I have properly christened the Camp Chickenbuck shirt!
The entire escapade wuz one helluva fun time!! GREAT characters there!!! We killed us some hogs and burned us some powder!!!
I would like to thank Steve for putting this together. and all the great folks who attended (yes...that includes everybody). After 1100+ miles since 0530 (NH time ) until 2315, I'm going to hit the sack. Yes, Jim, the freezer has already been filled.
Thanks for throwing that pick up RC......more comments to follow training tomorrow.
Outstanding time many thanks to the organizers, and those who generously allowed others to try out their fine weapons. Also great meeting all the campfire members!
Looks like a good hunt and time by all , need more pics tho, was realy wanting to make this hunt , just didnt work out for me , Id like to go next year tho! hope there plans for 2013!
ET, Why are you posing with that truck axel in your hand? Did you bludgeon the hog to death, or did he die of smoke inhalation? Everyone knows it takes a modern magnum with a European scope to kill anything.
The picture I wish I had taken was the sight of ET standing, holding his Sharps, with the pig down. Hanging 15-20 feet in the air is a cloud of blackpowder smoke, testifying to the events.
And Gunner and ET both brought some pretty darned cool rifles. That .44-90 Sharps flat hammered that big pig
For the record, despite a bit of hiking thre first day, I managed to gain 3 lbs on the trip

yes, David said he would mail to me. I had already order back all the Bore Guides and patches , little over 500.00 buck didn't think i would see them again , so now will have two of everything.
120 TTSX from my swede after going through A LOT of hog
Thats a great shot! Quite a smrgsbord of tools (NOT the guys) used on this Pork Quest. Looks like as usual, a great time was had by all but Porky!
I should try and make one of these pork hunts if the invite shows......<hint> <grin>
Steve, the guides were telling us they once had some historical reenactors who hunted stag, not just with period-correct crossbows, but with tights, doublets, curly-toed shoes and feathered hats.
Didn't show us any pictures, but if you can imagine Mel Brooks...

I also especially want to thank Pat, not just for the great eats and good cheer, but serving admirably as co-pilot on the long drive there & back Not only did we have some nice conversations, but he did a nice job of gently nudging me when I needed to take a break
Those guys are great though. Volunteering to follow them to Indy was a no brainer. The way that suburban sounded, I thought it wasn't going to make it. At least we would have one vehicle to go get help. Hope you make it next year Les
My natural restlessness paid off in spades on this trip. While I enjoy sitting around and shooting the chit, poking around the woods with Bobby allowed us to be "involved" in lots of bloodshed....the polka dot pig (if it gets far enough away he'll kill it!), a flinter hangfire and kill, running (literally) over the knolls with Corey after Bob's pig, and walking up on J's Whelen execution to name a few. I truly enjoyed walking all over the damn place with Bob and The Judge (let me know if you want me to throw those pics up).

George you had a ton a windshield time with ET how much do you NOT know about Buffler guns now?
I'll never absorb all the knowledge that Jim has to offer on that, or many other, topics. I try to pick up what I can, but know that it'll take a lot more trips to scratch the surface.
Trips like this have allowed me to become friends with folks of a caliber that I otherwise would have missed. Bob, Steve (and Steve NO prior), The Judge, Pugs and his brother, bgcatty, Dan (both of you), roof, BEA, and many others would be outside my "circle" under normal circumstances. It's an honor to hunt next to them and share experiences.
Gunner.....well.......he and I would definitely get along except for the whole Yankee/Rebel thing . (sorry for telling Pat you were a big ol' baby powder puzzy). Same goes for RC being a big ol' Hoosier. They're "my" people!
I would also like to point out that bgcatty's son is a credit to him and gives a negative azzhole like me hope for the future of this nation and hunters in general.
HAHA, no Les, he was hit with a 215 gn Woodleigh weldcore at 88 yards from an old 303 British, note that handy piece of rib bone sticking out glad I wasn't very hungry.
If they only knew the backside of me was covered in mud. When I fell into those wet leaves and mud down by the creek,it was the best I felt all morning. I think you and George were Springer Spaniels in another life. You boys hurt me bad. After 6 Alleve,I'm starting to get some feeling back in one of my legs. I thoroughly enjoyed that morning's hunt with you gents. Especially the part when it ended...downhill,on a road a ambulance could get to. I best get in shape to play with you fellas next year. Lesson learned. Thank you. Throwing away 7 1/2 pounds of peanut M&Ms this morning should give you some idea how serious I am.
Steve...didn't think you could outdo yourself from last year's gathering. I was wrong. In spite of some old friends I truly missed not being in camp, the first-timers did a fantastic job of filling some respected veteran footprints and coming across as guys who've been on these hunts from day one.
Pat...Chris right now is trying to duplicate your effort of Thursday night and he's been at his smoker since early this morning. I'll give it a taste at 830 when Chris says he'll be serving dinner. I don't know what to say,Pat...you're something special, man!
To all the new guys...it was truly a pleasure. I'd share a camp, and a dinner table, with you gents anytime.
To all the veteran guys who've shared camps with me in the past, you already know what I'm thinking. See you boys next time.
Gunner...please tell your lovely wife that was the best apple butter I ever tasted in my life.
Tom...you and Paul had Sassy laughing and proud. It was a pleasure seeing you again, sir.
Danny Boy...your 338.06 and you are more than ready for Africa. Best to you and Deb this September and I'll be seeing you soon, bro'! Thanks for the cigars and another year of good memories.
Steve and Allen...back to you guys as I'm saving the best for last. Thanks very much. Superb job! You gents raised the bar! Allen...Greg was a fine addition to this year's hunt. It was a pleasure meeting him.

And your darned right George my friend, I am still floored by the fact you did not receive any recovered bullet's back from the slaughter house, I would have bet every thing I own that my little 45 ACP handloads would NOT go through a 250/300 poung hog.
Still shakin' my head on that one, but very glad to know if called on, they will work
Gunner
P.S. and that's a freshly {shaved} and powered one

Some nice pics out of 28 hunters How many Hogs were killed? and Les, next year We will, have to show these guys the Killing power of the old 303 Savage! Hope you still have that 99"T"
I have a plan for next year, assuming it will be in Tennessee next year and assuming there will be one (but I have faith in Steve).
My house is only a few hours away with over 100' of porch, a fire pit (not yet but soon) and 13.5 acres. Not to mention a little bar on the river just a mere 3/4 mile away.
I can't tell you Les how good it is to see him out.
Thanks Scott, he needs it, he does a lot of work outside, cutting wood, and walking with his dogs, he will be out here this fall for a trip with Keith and a few others. Les
Ok - Let's see house this goes. I took less pics than I thought but here's what I have and some notes. No pics of my pig as it fits perfectly in the freezer space I have between deer and pheasant.
Let's keep in mind this wouldn't happen without Rick and this board. Sure, I wish he would use the banstick a little more on a certain individual but a hell of a guy to let us have this place to meet new friends and see new country.
OK - I warned you all- I suck at names but only slightly more than I do at faces. You want to rob a bank and have me at the perp line up? Good call you'll get off - but here's what I have. Some of the unlabeled are not campfire folks and some were missing the group pic as they were still up chasing swine
LTPowell and 7x57Steve debate the subject of the day in the kitchen
My brother Greg and I up on the top of the ridge. We road up in the guide's Tacoma and I have to say I'm still picking bed liner out of my butt where I sucked it up.
Pat, DVDGeorge and Sandcritter take in some lunch. Pat just farted.
NHK9 and Rockchucker wonder what the best way to overcome Gunner500 and swipe his .303 British double rifle is. They decide that it can't be done without sacrificing Isaac. They're OK with that but decide that it might be best to drag him up and down the hill first to make it look more like an accident.
The big house. Details on next year will be forthcoming after 7x57Steve gets back from visiting some buddies in FL.
My brother Greg with his pig. He's not a member here yet but he will be after the time he had. He said he hadn't met such a fine group of gents in his life and truly enjoyed himself. No one even gave him any crap for using a A-Bolt in .270 and the pig didn't seem to mind
I'm not a small dog guy and this one was just about 6 months and had a ton of character. It was said he was a jagerdog but I suspect that the actual lineage is a bit less certain. Still, great looking pup and lots of fun.
On to the fire! Weather Thursday night was perfect. Next year there may be a few less rocks which will be a good thing for sure. No one fell in as we all watched out for our brethren.
Isaac in his typical generous way passing out top quality cigars for those who wish to partake. NHK9, DVDGeorge and Rockchucker look on and decide how Bob ended up being an attorney and such a good guy. .
EvilTwin give Gunner500's .500 S&W a try. I personally have decided what I want for Christmas next year and it isn't a .500 S&W since I have not had problems with Rhino's in my trash recently.
Mongo likes cigars.
So, that's it for pics for me. A few more but they're duplicating those that have been posted. Let me say that once again this was a fine time with great gents I'd be happy to meet up with anywhere.
Someone said that as a member of the fire you could have trouble and need help anywhere in the country and there would be someone there to help you. I'd like to also point out that if you were anywhere in the country and you wanted to get in trouble there would be another campfire member the to help you do that too.
As usual, there wasn't a jerk anywhere and the list of folks you wouldn't want to be there won't be but there were some good folks that should be next year or I'm going to get offended.
Yep - we'll be back there next year at the same time-ish. When Steve gets back from FL look for a sign-up list to start. 37 as a max and we'll have exclusive use of the place and they'll have another 1000 acres to hunt.
Sandcritter would have taken a picture of the mescal tequila but he drank it all....at least he left the worm for me to eat...
I just want to point out, that when George and Bobby say a swig doesn't count unless a bubble comes up - well, it's a trick. But they'll get yer azz home safe afterward - thanks guys!
Everyone: Just wanted to say: Thank you! to everyone at the Boar Hunt. My son and I had a fantastic time enjoying the comraderie of everyone who was on the trip. My son said that he really enjoyed listening to all the "stories" told by all the hunters and that he was thankful that he didn't need boots that were too tall to wade through all the stories. I for one enjoyed every minute of the trip and the hunt. Thank you all for being so hospitable and friendly. We look forward to the next hunt with all of you! Regards, bgcatty
I am speechless. I had so much fun with you guys, laughing.hunting, eating great food(Pat). Gunner, Bob and David, thanks for your great company. Evil twin (Sharps) Now here's an interesting Man,in a good way. I will cherish these moments until next years hunt.
P.s. Gunner look me up if you're ever coming east. In fact that goes for all the guys who were on the hunt. Thank you, Ben
It is worth watching! ...I caught some folks looking at me funny when I was snickering for no reason in the middle of the day today...I was thinking about the Blair Hog Project....

Here's ET & the properly christened Camp Chickenbuck shirt:
I'm not quite sure what this is, but I'm glad he ignored me:
scenery the first morning:
the tiger has been fed:
the 7mm-08 Montucky, freshly blooded:
The young boar was only about 40 feet away, walking toward me when I shot. The first shot exited. He dropped after a few seconds and lay kicking, with his back toward me. The next shot spined him, and he lay still. This bullet stayed in, and was recovered. The load was 50 gr of Big Game and 120 TTSX, for those who care hard to fault the bullet performance.
You do realize we are going to have to make it to one of these don't you......I'm prepping the road monster in 2 weeks...the engine will be bullet proof!
That thing looks kinda like a Buffer, its a wonder ET didnt shoot it! When i was down there, they had a buffalo! Im in for next year unless Im Homeless & Broke!
Yes sir, they sure did. I saw that bottle inch it's way down over the course of a few days. However, with the quick destruction of a bottle of Mescal, and the traditional worm eating, it's hard for me to say just exactly what liquor provided me some hilarious entertainment over the following 3 hours.
As you know, with the 24H guys, premium liquors seem to be the norm, not the exception.
You and Jorge really need to break away from your practices and join us next year. Please bring a 'scrip for muscle relaxants just in case I hunt with George and Bobby again. Those two are in great shape, man. I'll never again say a disparaging word as to their squad's water aerobic classes.

They invited me along, too, but I figured guys who respectively chase German Shepherds and bad guys for a living were gonna run me to death

I had planned to be there this year, but coaching 10u Travel BB got in the way. I would have delegated, but it was the Super NIT weekend. We laid an egg in the first inning of bracket play and time expired before our comeback was complete. I could have used some of that firewater after that.
Mezcal? Oh brother! Knew it well back in my undergraduate days. Not man enough to eat the worm anymore. Monte Alban Mezcal was responsible for many a bad morning.

An option to consider. Week later won't work for me. Steve will work it when he's back on-line next week. I have a bit of the Calvados left so I'll be sure Jorge gets a taste at our Jagerfest in May.
After the morning hunt, maybe it was best to have missed the group pic!
Exactly, what did you miss it for? I see that Pat found a comfortable resting place for his right hand. Just how long did he keep it there?...hmmmmmmm!
BTW I have some SC treats for you and I'm over your way with my taxman in the next week.
Great thread from start to finish Gents!!!!!! Well done and thanks for sharing for those unable to attend!!!
That ice cold beer looked so good after George and Bobby destroyed me on that 4 hour hike which,by the way,was remarkably lacking in downhill respites. You know I'm exhausted when Pat can't make me laugh.
Today it was nothing but electrolyted water,2 salads and 20 minutes on the stationary bike. They taught me a valuable lesson for which I'm grateful.
You missed a great 4 days David and you do need to have that BBQ cook-off with Pat and Bart. Get in on the next one,if possible.
You and George get major props with your longbow kill and George's 45 bulls-eyes. Impressive stuff. I can't believe you weren't exhausted after that 80 yard hunt.
Dan was getting pretty good with that bow of yours.
I was in shape for my elk hunt and Africa. I let myself go the last couple of months. After the Texas hunty,I'd tread lightly were I you. I thought you were going to pass out.

Too much oxygen, heat and humidity ....you on my turf now..Ill take it easy on ya!
Can I shoot one from my rental? I'm buying one of those lights Pat recommended for coyotes and bobcats,if they roam there. That light Pat had was remarkable. Bought one today.

The Jim's will!
You forget...I know the LEO and Judge in that country....bring a banjo they like lawyers
I have to say Pat was one of the best "sports" I ever guided, he kept up with me and listened as well as being a great shot in tight quarters, I think that hog was gonna run us down had he not stuck it!
Planning, scouting and shortcuts make that possible. When I have a skilled hunter I just cut to the chase and get the job done,... no need to take someone on a 7 hour death march all over the mountains

Um excuse me for a bit....I need to go get my hip boots!
Welcome to the campfire hoghunter4! Sounds like I missed a heck of a meal and I love catfish and hushpuppies!
I bought my friend Chris a pair for a gift and he used them for his hunt. He loves those things. Mine have been perfect for both Africa and now,Tennessee. Great pair of boots.
One pleasant discovery, enjoyed by us in the "servant's quarters" was Rebecca Creek Texas Whiskey. I bought it on a whim, and it disappeared faster than about anything else on the table
Pat, been looking at American flat bows, reading. Your's was a hoot. So far, a little Fred Bear Montana is calling my name. Could you shoot me the draw weight yours is at (for reference)?
Dabbled in compounds as a kid but the maintenance and diddling grew tiresome. The thought of just stringing a bow and walking out on the patio to shoot instinctively, is a VERY appealing way to chill out. Less analytical, more coon-azz.
Bobby is the redheaded step child I'm the real son!
I am Gunners spiritual advisor. My advice is that if'n he wants his life to be worth a plug nickle,he best not adopt ANYBODY and put them in his will It'd be like one of those dark comedy's where everyone is tryin' to knock off the rich stepfather to get his loot
Best movie I ever saw with that story line was Kind Hearts and Cornonets with Alc Guiness. Hilarious, then again it was British humor but most appropriate given his FINE choice in firearms. So what gun(s) should I bring next year? I'm thinking one of my 1895s???

My bows are 64" (my draw length is 28.5"), 50#'s draw weight. That's light enough to be easy to shoot, and heavy enough to kill just about anything. There are lot's of good bowyers out there. Mine are from Dick Robertson...Robertson Stybow.
It's still kinda funny that I took 3 scoped rifles, all capable of 1 MOA or less, and wound up shooting the pig at 40 feet with all the rain the leaves were wet and it was fairly easy to quietly sneak up on them.
Unless this new 1000 acre pasture is a lot more open, I'm thinking a big bore thumper is indicated next year. Or heck, I may even just blood a revolver.
This or Patrick's revolver idea sounds really fun....or a ghost ring on a 336...or bow... 2 fellows used some law enforcement mind trick to plant the idea of using a spear in my head...I can't stop thinking about it.

R1150R, my Sharps is a 45-120, it likes the 540 gn Paul Jones Creedmoor bullet at around 1550 fps , but ET will have me shootin' paper patch in no time flat.
Actually for hunting big critters, a rnfn profile is da catz nutz. Creedmores ar getting close, but no flat nose. IT DON'T TAKE MUCH OF A FLATNOSE to be a real killer.
Might of been something going on with his vision at that precise moment in time...... But what happens in Tennessee stays in Tennessee per Evil Twin "The Boar slayer" so said.

You can book me for your guide, Pat didn't even have to break a sweat.... Best book early every one wants the guide who can get ya the biggest hog without all the fuss and sore muscles
Lawd have mercy.......the wife and I just finished gorging on ribs and chops from the grill.....the little 130 lb. Tennessee razorback boar was fabulous
I now have wifey's permission and blessings to return next year for two hogs.
Sharps 45-120, and an 8-Bore rifle will do the honor's next year, can't wait
definitely have to take something interesting next year. The Kimber worked very efficiently, and would have been the go-to choice in the rain, but three scoped rifles was overkill for me
Hmm. I'm pretty thin on the pointy thing on the end of the barrel in the collection, but I guess I could bring the one I do have. It came mounted on a wicked snazzy rifle I bought years ago. You've probably never heard of it, though. Real high end import type stuff is not for everyone (no offense).
It's called the SKS, made by some fancy company named Norinco. And no it's not for sale!
Somewhere in the back of my mind (I know, it's a small place ) I recall someone necking down a .22lr to either .14 or .12 caliber...not sure what for, but it would be fun to shoot!
Approximately when is the 2013 boar hunt going to be? I'm new and didn't know anyone so I didn't sign up for 2012. After following this thread I realize what a mistake I made (and Gunner said I shouldn't have let that bother me).

I'll post when I get the sticky.
Steve
R115OR,
IIRC, kickoff to 2013 boar hunt will be within one day of this year's hunt......around 3-15-2013.
Round two tonight, as I type this the smell of wild boar breakfast sausage, homemade cat-head biscuits [no offense Mr. Lee ] gravy and coffee is filling up this old farm house.
Peach trees are blooming nicely.....so there will be another bumper crop for more peach preserves Son, and take good care of that Colt
ET, I passed on your compliments to the Wifey, and yes, that honey mustard goes with about anything but ice cream.....pastrami sammiches are one of my fav. combos with that stuff.
And yes Dan my other son, not to worry, plenty of weaponry and condiments for all
We has the Blackberry and have put it up every year since I was knee high to a grasshopper, never tire of the stuff. Heck a sammich of it and sliced cheddar on homemade bread is a lunch fit for KINGS!
Looking back on the hunt,I gotta say that all of the men were fantastic! Being new to the Campfire, it was reading posts and learning. It was to be much more than that. New friends were made, relationships were created.....how cool is it when another hunter is willing to give me his time(to drive hogs) his weapon(for a better shot)Thank you David,or create meals that were absolutely delicious(Pat) Then you have the mentors like 7x57steve, safety was number one,be a gentleman, number two and find your mark.
God willing,we will all be together next year to share another wonderful experience. Warmest regards, Portsider
Heck! I'll out bid rockchuker from my grave. Besides,There ain't nothing worth more than a fine rifle. Somme folks like jewely or fast cars or even faster Womens, not me, I just like a fine rifle. Fair enough.
I prepared Gunner's Will if that gives any of you a hint where the rifle will end up. That man will sign anything after 2 inches of moonshine hits his bloodstream.
That makes 6 24H Wills I have prepared. When some folks kick off,I'm gonna be a 1%er!
Campfire Will: I (state yer name) have no money or guns left to bequeath to anybody because BEING of sound mind I blew it all on whiskey, women and hunting trips. Yez can ALL go scratch! Signed, The Unrepentant Sinner
LOL gentlemen, I kinda like the way ET's thinkin' why save it, blow it all to hell, spur the hell outta this thing called life and ride her fer all she's worth .
Hey man, I drove out the old lynch pin and ran a brand new grade 8 bolt and a ny-lock nut to try and hold that POS on face I thought you would at least recognize and appreciate my hillbilly ingenuity LMAO.
We came close to a coyote hunt at the hog hunt , we would need to call out in the open this time of year, damn snakes are already out.......and turkey season isnt till 4-21
What a beauty this weapon is! What vintage? Sorry Gunner,I gotta new yen for this combo gun. Afraid I'll have to pass up that fine Winchester you got. Ya see, I got a Bad case of the "I wants"........It's incureable.

10-roger portsider, but i think Dan has a death grip on that old 50-110 WCF, i wish he would take it to Africa and slay a cape buff with it.

That is my rifle took my first wild boar with it in 2009 in Tennessee. Dad gave it to me the month before he died. JP Sauer & Sohn 1912. 9,3x72R and 12 gauge. Single set rifle trigger. I love that rifle.
10-4 Dan, iffin you change yer mind lemme know, there wouldnt be a thing wrong with lettin' a tracker or scout carry it along for close shots in the bush.
A 525gn "solid" for all logical reason at 2200 ft/ sec is the ticket for dangerous game.
I am booking two weeks next year so I can drive down without racing, and bring back dead pig to eat. The whole old military with bayonet affixed is one of the "gonna be there" rifles. It will be a real Canadian historically correct Lee Enfield. Gunner you will appreciate the calibre is 303.
I think I read 80 quart cooler per butchered pig to transport. Do you use dry ice down there?
I relished reading all the accounts of what I missed. Really happy for you all.
Didn't see any dry ice. I always had best when I just had the meat CHILLED. Did that wid my Newfie moose and it is LOTS easier to keep cold than to risk thawing. Every gas station you find has ice for sale. Freeze it when ya get home.
I will wear Canuck camo...blue jeans andt-shirt. you can hide anywhere in Canada with that gear. Except in winter when the Hydro parka is over the t-shirt.
Here's to think'n about all the members of the boar hunt. Man! I never thought you could pack so many good men in one place,I can't wait 'till next year. Best regards to Steve,Gunner,Dan and all the other great guys that make a hunting trip special. Hell, I feel sad for regular folks that don't know what they're missing out on. Hell, I feel worse when the young folk don't have someone to show them the light. Believe it or not,my Wife and I have spent many, many hours teaching kids and adults in the safe handling and shooting firearms, what( Evil twin)calls "Thunder stick". That adds up to a lot of missed game and even Fish! Best regards to all, Portsider.
Actually, this hunt was interesting in the number of old rifles used to take pigs. Gunners' .303 double, the Winchester 32 spl,the flinter at the mansion, my Sharps....OLD timey calibers really showed how they carried the day and the mail didn't they!?
Thanks for the kind words but, Gunner shooting a double .303,Evil twins Sharps,Dan stalking with a Bow? And of course, the patients of a flintlock. Not to mention ,7x57steve,shooting the venerable .30-40 Craig. Damn! I was there when BEA175 shot his hog with that 6.8.... ....Nothing but the sound of a hog crumbling. We all had fun.
If any of you fellas is near Mass.,give me a holler,we have room and I know the best places to eat and drink-however,I am a good cook.
I'm goin' after two bigguns next year, one with the old Sharps rifle, and the other is gonna get an 850 gn round ball from my 8 Bore, Black Powder smoke for all.

Hummpphhh. Here I was gonna buy a .450 Nitro #1 to have the biggest hardest kicking rifle there next year...but I think you've beat it already
I did buy a really nice .45-70 #1. I think it will get the smokeless jacketed bullet loads. We'll see what sort of other BP thumper I can come up with. Maybe a .54 Hawken replica, or...
eviltwin, makes a very solid point regarding older(obsolete)calibers. These weapons put food on the table, way back when.....so, what has changed? Does modern day game refuse to be taken by old timers? No. The fact is,everybody wants faster, easier and less hassle to shoot. I'm all about modern rifles and modern calibers but,you can't rile out the tried and proven. example: 6.5 mauser,7x57,.257 Roberts, .284 win.,.300 sav. and so on. There's a lot of good old calibers that just wait to be dusted off and put into action.
Think I'll leave knives & spears to the young & nimble. If I have to kill a pig with a knife, something has gone terribly wrong
I've added a .45-70 Ruger #1, recently, which can take some real heavy loads, and there's a .54 cal Hawken replica on the way to me. Either of those oughta work fine.
It was nice, though, when rain threatened, having the SS Montana on hand. Handy to carry, too.
BTW it was a pleasure to spend 3/4 of a week alongside a group of distinguished gentlemen. Not a person there that wouldn't be welcome in my home.
Can't wait for the sign-up for next year! Not just because the campfire group was there but also because of the hospitality and kindness that was shown to us by the crew at Wilderness and the local community. T'was truely a great time! Made some great friends!
Excellent move. I depended on your own good judgement as a father to do the right thing. All I can think of is how irresponsible I would have been to have a hatchet and a knife at his age.
But I also have no doubt he will be a highly responsible member of our community. His very responsible judgement to fulfill his priorities ahead of what would be fun speaks volumes about his character and the wisdom of his parents.
And I hope he can make the boar hunt next year. Sons and daughters of prior attendees get, and deserve, preferential treatment.
Please give him my best, and I look forward to seeing him in Tennessee next year.
All I can think of is how irresponsible I would have been to have a hatchet and a knife at his age.
My old man gave my brother and I both at about his age. I (we) spent a lot of hours chopping ice on the brooks and dropping trees for forts. I'm still not sure how we made it out with all our fingers.
Oh well then, obviously you two never have tried the Tarzan hunting experience.
Guess it will just have to be reserved for late season deer here in Michigan.
Nothing gives you a rush like standing over fresh harvested game in your loincloth with hunting rock in hand and letting the cry be heard throughout the forest......
LOL, you dudes are great , no pig punchin' for me , and I laughed so hard that Fri night something popped in my neck, probably just loosened a little plaque........who says a bit of cain raisin' aint good fer circulation?

I'm hunting with my wife next year. No noise,no fuss. Give her a couple drinks (she's irish) and she'll walk right up to the poor bast**d and knock him out!

It is somewhat disturbing, to portray oneself as a collector of single shot rifles, without ever owning a Sharps. Guess I'd better fix that.
The Ruger's going to get some pointy bullet loads, and it's going to run them 2500+ fps
A .54 Hawken is arriving soon. If it shoots, it will go to Tennessee, I expect

Portsider/Ben, what the hell were those whiskeys on the slave quarters table that helped us solve all the world's problems? One of them was something like austin rose or something (it came in #2 as I recall). Trying to remember who was #1? Cabinet needs filling!

The one that seemed to disappear quickest was the Rebbecca Creek, which is made in Texas, believe it or not. I just grabbed a bottle of it today, along with some Pusser's rum
RE: Servant's encampment liquor , when I got home and was unpacking I somehow wound up with partial and whole bottle's of Rebecca Creek Whiskey, Flag Hill Vodka, and some kind of Cherry Moonshine from North Carolina.
I'm guessin' my oldest step-son Rockchuker loaded them in my ice chest. [thanks son], the Wifey doesn't drink, however I talked her into putting about 6 or 8 of those cherries out of the commercial moonshine on her vanilla ice cream LOL, she said "OOOOHHHH, Oh dear, these are hot, Oh mmmmm" LMAO, I think she liked them
Rebecca Creek, that's right! Was good, very easy to sip. We put a lot of, um, effort into making sure they were all sampled thoroughly.
Was it Pendleton we had #1 maybe? Then Rebecca (oh, Rebecca... I miss her). Then....
Jerry, re: north cackilacky moonshine, didn't think of using the cherries on ice cream. You've just opened up some new summertime culinary possibilities. Can vouch for it being a good sedative for insomnia, however.
Thanks, Bobbie. Didn't note even a hint of the rumored antelope piss, either.
So learned two really accessible whiskey's from you all. May have to drive to Texas to find Rebecca Creek, but, you know. Maybe can trade with Tex n Cal for some.
Then there's hauntingly good Norse elixirs like this. I can't look at anything yellow and not think "Bear Grylls", though.
