I reel left handed with a spinning rod as well, so it just feels like the natural way to go.

I certainly don't need to be muscling a reel when I'm dealing with foot-long trout, so the reel is pretty much an afterthought, and just some place to wind up the line at the end of the day. I need rod control in my right hand a whole lot more than I need to be reeling.

Somebody else may tell me that I'm wrong, but this old hack is alone 99% of the time that I'm out on the stream, so I guess they won't be there to correct me anyway!
