My Grandfather was only 9 or 10 yrs old when it was built. My G Gf and brothers built it IN this configuration.
In the 1920s they built a lower addition. It had a hallway and 4 or 5 feed/milking rooms.

Being on the S side, the sun, heat, & wind (our prevailing wind is SW) took their tolls on it. I tore that off and used the tin to cover the S wall -- which is Cedar polls.

There is MUCH reclaimable wood in this old barn >>> but I'm still using the barn which is solid today.
