Doc, Thanks for this very informative thread. Most of us just don't have access to this type of data.
I actually carried a Walther PPKS 380 for a time because they lay so flat under the clothing. They are kind of hard to hang onto when one finger is just hanging there.
Now I like a 642 instead. If concealment wasn't needed I would carry an N frame for sure.
When I took my concealed carry test the instructor did a night fire shoot and I was surprised how much less muzzle flash my 1911 had compared to the guy next to me shooting a 380. He was lighting up the place with that little Browning! One of the biggest concerns for me is whether or not to carry in a pocket or else finding just the right holster.
The wrong holster can negate lots of other theoretical advantages. A 1911 is a good belt holster weapon but I like to pocket carry most of the time. Although it can be pretty tough on the blue jeans.
