I worked under a helicopter building power lines across Chickaloon flats in Alaska till it crashed killing four linermen. Pretty sure they didn't have your class of maintaince.
Most crashes are Pilot error. I don't know the story of the crash you speak of it could very well have been maintenance related. But that is the exception rather than the norm. There are operators that do some seriously shady chit to make a profit. However there are a lot that don't cut corners too.
