Yes, they can spread like that if conditions are right. Read up on the Fire of 1910. In only 3 days, it burned 4700 square miles in north Idaho, WA, MT, and BC.
Info may be erroneous as to smaller fires. Much hyperbole on the net. For every comment like Home Depot burned down, another comment says it's still there. Hard to sort it all out! One thing is certain, Oregon is burning up from the Columbia river to California and it cannot be a coincidence, IMO.
