The phrase "useful idiot" comes to mind when describing paddler and co-horts.

I'm not willing to go that far.
From the looks of it he is "useful" in that he at least can take care of his dog and at least takes it to the woods for fun. "Sportsmanlike" fun of course.
And he's doing a good job at keeping us ammused and occupied like our "Cermalube friend".
