When in HS (1974), an older friend taught me to reload. I was shooting a sporterized, surplus Springfield. 30-06. Loading 5 rounds, laser loading. Ended up with 52.5gr 4064 over a Win LR primer and 150 Sierra FB SP. Consistent 5 shot groups of 5/8", @ 100 yards and 1" - 1 1/2" @ 200.

Have NEVER loaded any other powder or 150 gr bullet.

Going on elk hunt in 1983, I decided I needed 180 gr. Using same type load ladder of 5 rounds, ended up with 54.5 gr H4831 and Hornady SP.

Recently acquired a classic Winchester Model 70, first trip to the range, took both loadings. Outstanding accuracy.

Grandson wanted a .30-06. Tried to talk him into a .260, 7-08, or .25-06. He insisted on .30-06.

Son got him a Savage for Christmas. We sighted the scope in and then shot a 3/4" 5 shot group. He fired 2 shots and hasn't touched the rifle since.

I'm thinking 115-125gr loaded around 2600-2800 fps would suit him better, for now. Any real world experience? Preferably using 4064, 4350, or 4831SC.
