Two situations as different as can possibly exist, since the Germans were defeated after a long fighting retreat, while America was never even invaded. As they retreated, they had to retreat with their prisoners, and place them in already occupied camps behind their lines, which quickly became overcrowded. On top of being overcrowded, their supply lines were cut off for food, potable water, medicine, and pesticides for controlling lice. Lice spread typhus, resulting in mass deaths and piles of emaciated dead bodies. Conditions on the losing side are often horrible vs conditions on the winning side of a war.
