You should read "Redneck Riviera: outlaws, armadillos and the demise of an American dream" by Dennis Covington. Really good portrayal of rural Floridians outside the tourist traps/resort areas. Some crazy flatland hillbillies.
Same author wrote "Salvation on Sand Mountain" about the penecostal snake handlers. Both are damn good reads

I find South Florida to be a beautiful place.
I did as well. Spent a year between key largo and Sanibel island/Ft.Myers. The Keys back then felt disconnected from the U.S. The "Conch republic" operated on a whole other level of debauchery. We'd go to work at the marina and the bartender would line up shots to start the shift. Great place to live for a 20 year old that DGAF.
