That's interesting.

How many Japanese died in our custody?

How many Jews died in German custody?

Two situations as different as can possibly exist, since the Germans were defeated after a long fighting retreat, while America was never even invaded. As they retreated, they had to retreat with their prisoners, and place them in already occupied camps behind their lines, which quickly became overcrowded. On top of being overcrowded, their supply lines were cut off for food, potable water, medicine, and pesticides (Zyklon B) for controlling lice. Lice spread typhus, resulting in mass deaths and piles of emaciated dead bodies. Conditions on the losing side are often horrible vs conditions on the winning side of a war.

Them Germans were supposedly a smart people, with intelligent leaders.

Why didn't they figure it out when they were starting to lose, then they would not have had that long fighting retreat, with the resulting problems that kept them from taking such good care of all their prisoners, as they had been doing all along during the War years?

I don't get it, if they loved their prisoners so much, and their own people even, why put everyone in the Fatherland and the conquered areas under such privations?

Should have surrendered when they got pushed back into Germany, maybe well before that. Then the controversy about the "camps" would not exist as we would all see how well those interned there were taken care of. Nice fat healthy folks, kept for their own safety no doubt.
