Dunno man, books just might have been uncommon in those days.
Christ Himself quotes from Scripture when he taught His disciples. All the Disciples talk about reading, studying and quoting Scripture. They were all practices Jews. They all had access to Scripture.
So we have BOTH secular sources and Biblical sources demonstrating that the early Church had access to and used Scripture.
