I don't think it has to do so much with the downgrade of an equivalent caliber as it does with it being compatible with a short action...then if that's the case there's no need for the 7mm/08 with the 280..260 with the 264 or 308 with the 30/06.It's about puttin something tried and true in a more compact package...
