Sherman foraged and then destroyed everything he didn't take with him.

But he never condoned or ordered harm to the civilian populations of the south. Although it's hard to believe individual isolated terrible acts didn't occur, they were not the practiced or official policy of the Union Army under Sherman's command.

Sherman was a lot tougher and ruthless on the Indians of the west than he was the confederate populations of the South.
