Excellent point! “These United States.” Means exactly that ,plural. And nobody, including Lincoln, doubted individual states’ rights to self rule and secession. Ironically loyalty to one’s own state instead of the country as a whole weakened the South especially in forming effective cohesive strategy. Lee was loyal to Virginia foremost. A fatal mistake.
