Random stump I came across on a gravel bar on the upper Chena, that was smoldering. Absolutely bizarre. There wasn't a fire around and the entire stump was smoldering, like the heat was coming from it's core. I have zero explanation for this.

If I was to guess on the root ball burning, I'd guess it was similar to a manure pile that can smolder enough to turn to ash on the inside. That's a guess, but it could have been the right combo of moisture and root/combustible material?
