This passage is the basis for my belief that Jesus did not found his “church” on Peter, or on Peter’s affirmation of faith. Instead it is founded on the Holy Spirits ability to reveal Jesus as the Christ to every honest seeker after God, with no need for a human intermediary.
So..... am I saying the Roman Catholics AND the Protestants both got it wrong?
Yeah.
I would agree that the Church isn't founded on Peter. I read the scripture to say that it would be founded on the revelation that Jesus is the Christ,The Son of the Living God,which as you point out would be revealed by the Holy Spirit. It would be a poor foundation indeed if it were founded upon any man.
