Russia has been fighting this war with extreme restrictions and minimal manpower. USA/NATO has prevented the total collapse of the Ukraine army with huge amounts of hardware and ammunition but at tremendous costs to the Ukraine. That’s coming to an end. Russia is mobilizing and the gloves are coming off. As soon as the ground freezes you will see the actual Russian army come into the war. Up until now Russia has fraught with Russian artillery and armor backing mostly Donbas militia and the Wagner group mercenaries. They Russians have fought with a four to six to one disadvantage in manpower. A winter offensive with a half million men and unrestricted or at least much less restricted rules of engagement will be a different war. The Russians have taken most of the Donbas with minimal manpower and very restrictive rules of engagement. There’s no reason to think that more manpower and less restrictive rules will not result in the crushing of whatever is left of the Ukrainian army and honestly the Ukraine as a whole. The fact that we the USA have made it clear that there will be no negotiated settlement means Russia will be forced to take all of the Ukraine.
Tactical retreat to preserve men and machines isn’t losing a war if you’re not depleted of men and machines. Putins popularity didn’t drop from 83% to 77% because he’s in an unpopular war. He’s losing support because he’s been to restrictive and not crushed the Ukraine. That’s going to change. Russia is a military arms depot with millions of men to call up if needed. We the USA have made it much more expensive and bloody to take the Donbas that doesn’t change to ultimate outcome.
