IMO the Russian invasion of Ukraine is akin to Nazi Germany's invasion of Czech Sudetenland in 1938. Putin wants to annex parts of Ukraine in the same way that Hitler annexed Sudetenland, which was clearly recognized as being part of sovereign Czechoslovakia. Appeasement only embolden Hitler and any failure to push back against Putin is likely to embolden him to invade other sovereign nations that were formally part of the Russian Empire and/oir the USSR.

Our support of Ukraine is no different than the USSR's support of North Vietnam during the Vietnam War or our support for Afghanistan during Soviet-Afghan War.

Close, but a more appropriate analogy would be Putins previous invasions and annexation of Crimea. Or perhaps even better, Georgia. No consequences, so he decided to take another bite of the apple.
