They made the match, from the Ka Bar sheath, to the DNA in the garbage. This was 6 weeks after the murder.
However, I bet a dollar they were working ancestry and 23andme for links to some second cousin, about 3 days after the murders. The cops would have been stupid not to work this angle. The cops didn't release all their evidence in this single affadavit.
