I think it was "foreign", 30 cal, .270, etc. were "American".

6 mm's were rolled out as .243 and .244, not 6 mm until the .244 cratered and Rem needed another name... Even Roy Weatherby named his 6 mm the .240.

Winchester didn't dare roll out their .264 WM as a 6.5 something or another... blush

Not necessarily logical, but may have some merit.
