I have had a number of Savage 1899s and 99's over the years. I still have several but one in particular is special. I bought it as a shot out takedown made in 1917. It was rebarreled by Henry Cheatham and along the way we began to discuss building it as an interchageable barrel gun in 250 Savage, 22-250 and 300 Savage. Henry did the work and it came out with scopes and a mount that is matched to each caliber and load.
Henry built the mount to use the stock holes and contours of the receiver to spread the recoil instead of drilling new holes in a slim receiver. He said he would never build another one.
He built one for himself as he built mine and after his death it was sold for over $5000. Only my kids will have to worry about what mine will bring.
I'll try to pull it out of the safe and take some pics. I got the idea from an article in an old issue of "Rifle". I don't use mine for a truck gun like the author did.
