I used to book a few hunts for a pig guide in Northern California. Went with him several times, too. He and all of his guides packed model 94 30/30's with peep sights. I loaded about 100 of the old original BArnes 'X' wide flat hollow point 170gr bullets for them and to a man they all said the performance on pigs of that load was just devastating. Those were a NASTY looking bullet with a huge jagged looking crater in the snout.

That combo did seem to be, to them, pretty ideal and they quietly laughed at all the heavy artillery people brought to hunt pigs with. To be fair, many of the guided hunters had never seen a feral pig but had heard stories of the pigs legendary toughness and 'gristle plate armour' and such, plus they brought what they had for longer range hunting of big game.
