Cartridge design certainly has been improved upon since the 30'06. Personally I think it is overkill for deer, and recoil is too much for volume shooting. The 280 is what the '06 should have been from the start. I'd take a swede over either though...
I would suggest "optimized for particular purposes" rather than "improved" upon.
My safe holds a.280 Rem and five .30-06 rifles. if I had to chose between a .280 Rem and a .30-06 as my only rifle, the .30-06 would win easily.
