Russia isn’t relying on mercenaries. That’s a misunderstanding of language. Russia started transitioning to an all volunteer army and relying less and less on conscripts. These volunteers are called “contract” soldiers since they are on a contract with the Army.
Now, most of the actual ground forces over there right now are separatists and militia.
Kind of like tens of thousands of black Hawk type contractors the US uses.
