Dan
I overline and underline rods regularly and that is because most of my rods are acquired some unusual way or another... Like on close-outs or trades... So I am anything but a purist... But I do not understand the overline it from the start mentality.

If you like a slower rod, buy a slower rod; they are cheaper that way!

I can make the entire line go away with most any reasonable rod and line under decent conditions, but some rods require more work while others require better timing. The problem with the high end rods is how much harder they are to cast short. And few really fish very far from themselves.

Getting more of an underlined line out will load most rods well enough and distance is acceptable with them, too.

All by way of saying I overline because I am mostly a cheap bastard and end up needing to... Not because I intentionally buy into it.
