Quick bump for a cool thread…

My FIL spent roughly 6 years in Laos living in the jungle, flying for CAT and trying to keep a low profile. Then around 1970 he was moved to Saigon where he stayed until after the evacuation. He grew up in Alaska and started flying bush planes at 14 and then flying mail and passengers to Kodiak. He bought his first fishing boat in Sitka when he was 15 on a handshake between him and the local banker in Sitka. It was a 2 year loan on the old wooden Coast Guard boat The Fern and by that fall my FIL (dad) had paid the loan back in full. He said that he was a kid that didn’t need to sleep and was so excited to finally be his own captain that he couldn’t have slept anyway. He fished long and hard the summer of 1953 or 1954 that he easily paid the boat off. Dad was from family that had settled in Bel Fourche and became respected members of the community back then. His grandpa or great-something was the mayor of Bel Fourche and Deadwood at the same. I’ve been going through old photos from the Deadwood days as well as his time in Alaska and SE Asia. “Dad” lived an interesting life and seems to be the opposite personality than I’d expect from the adventures he had. He was a type B personality and didn’t want to fight or argue for anything which used to drive me crazy. He was a great guy and I really loved him. I’ll try to work through his pictures and occasionally post something (hopefully) interesting.
