My take is they sold the Army on the long action because Remington probably had a ton of them lying around, and saw a good marketing ploy to sell the damn things. They probably mentioned that they could change the M24 over to 300 winmag, and the Army bought into it. It's doubtful the US Army will re chamber and re bolt the M24 as it's being replaced with SR25's from Knight.

The AMU had so much brass because they only used LR match brass once. If they didn't give it away, it has to go somewhere.
