"Arnold Strong" was a stage name, used by several circus strong men. This was from the era of P.T. Barnum and all these men used kettle bells for work outs and for exhibitions.
I can reword the sentence by using some new names, and those of you who don't know much about heavy weights will be just as baffled.
Any one who had lifted heavy weights would know who George Hackenschmidt, Eugene Sandow, Arthur Saxon, Louis Cyr and others were.
