I'm quite familiar with HB and their offerings. If you looked up at the building across the street as you exited the beer hall you were looking at the Platzl which is the hotel where I've stayed many times.
When I go to Munich I always get out to Perlach to drink beer at the Forschungsbrauerei. They serve a blond bock that's stronger than the HB stuff. The last time I was there my buddy and I didn't want to walk back to the train station during the rain storm that came up so we kept drinking. After three liters each we were damn glad we weren't driving.
