It isn't for mortals, but Lee could probably bring 'em into about 10 meters or less. I never employed arty for close support, only for chasin' Charlie round about the A Shau and bustin' a few bunkers here and there. The 8" was a jewel for that and Free Fire zones were my play ground. Otherwise, snakes took the same direction as artillery for close support and we used mortars for perimeter defense when we wanted tube arty. You can get close with them.
