Don't know a thing about that.. unlike you, I wasn't around back in 1919 to design it for them.
But it's totally inaccurate to ever refer to it that way. You could have stated that it was ".3086" diameter bullets for the 30-06 machineguns", or any of a dozen different ways than saying 30-06 diameter.
Kind of like referring to old Savage ammunition as "303 Savage diameter ammunition". Inaccurate, misleading, and totally confusing..
