In most areas I've hunted elk, in eastern Oregon, the veg is denser enough than that to form a solid canopy impenetrable to vision from afar. That'd be pretty cool, to be able to see them on hillsides that far away.

That being said I'm considering buying an OTC Roosevelt elk tag this year and giving that a try. That's basically a Coast Range hunt. THICK, steep, muddy, wet..... the reason being, I saw a stud male elk a few days ago when I bailed down a logging road to test a new Glock 19 on my way to a deer hunt. Never saw the head/horns but it was a BIG, well-muscled, clearly male elk. I don't *think* Rosies move around near as much as Rocky Mountain elk so it might be valuable intel to know where one is making its general AO.... maybe. If I do it I'll snap a pic of the jungle. smile
