St Petersburg, then Leningrad, has recovered. But there are some things that its people cannot forget.

It was history's longest and deadliest military blockade - and its almost horror movie-like stories still make us shudder in disbelief.

As many as two million people perished during World War II’s Siege of Leningrad - making it ten times more deadly than the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

When Hitler ’s armies encircled the Russian city on September 8, 1941, its citizens found themselves trapped, hungry, and under constant bombardment from Nazi bombings.

And as the days turned into weeks, months, and years, and winter temperatures dropped to minus 40, many turned to desperate measures to stay alive.

When the siege finally ended 872 days later on January 27, 1944 - 75 years ago on Sunday - only 700,000 of the city’s three million residents were left.

Most had died from starvation. Some, however, had become victims of the most desperate act of the starving - cannibalism.

How long would Americans tough it out?
